Gender Preference?

Feb 16, 2017

    1. I like realistic guy sculpts but i dont like guy dolls with weird dicks?!?! Like some companies put it there just to give the body a dick but its so far from what it should look.. i guess if it looked half detailed id like to get one, but thats still open for debate since ive always liked girls and i even prefer drawing girls as well!! :XD:

Omg why do i feel like i can connect with you!!!:frownyblush:

    2. Old, married, straight grandma. My collection is entirely male and I have no interest/plans to add females to my collection. All my guys are characters from my novels and I write exclusively m/m so there's pretty much my reasoning behind what I have. There are females in my novels, I simply have zero interest in having any as dolls. I can appreciate the beauty of female dolls, I simply don't want to own any as they don't spark any creativity in me.

    3. Hahahahaha its okay, everyone is unique and have their own preference! Im sure you'll be able to find the right doll! He/she is out there just waiting to be discovered!!! XD

As for me, i have a long long list of wants since im crazily attracted to a cute and unique doll!! I have and do prefer anthros since i think they are more special and distinctive in terms of features compared to humans!! Hahahah too many cute things are hurting my wallet!!

Over all it seems sexual orientation doesnt really matter when deciding for a doll but i do know someone who is gay and asked him why he only wants boy dolls. He simply replied that he prefer looking at guy aesthetics since he was gay! Hahaah

Another one is that i have a straight guy friend and i asked him why not get a guy doll. He said he thought it was weird if he dressed up a male doll. He said it was uncomfortable for him

    4. Iโ€™m also an asexual female since birth and my dolls are all female. Mostly due to my love for making their clothes versus the more straight-line mens clothing. I find that women tend to wear more diverse outfits so I go with their sculpts.

I also just put down for layaway three more females to increase my size range so I can boost my etsy account....and yet most of the characters I have running around in my head are males. -shrugs-

    5. I'm demi/grey-asexual with an aesthetic orientation that skews strongly female. All my dolls are female, even the ones with androgynous looks.

    6. I am aro-ace and with shades of like NB... I am not sure where I sit on the gender spectrum since it is partly "wish I could flip genders like a light switch" and partly "gender roles are so dumb! I saw a mom argue with her daughter about whether or not sharks are for girls!"

I am definitely more interested in masculine beauty than feminine beauty. I have way more boy dolls than girl dolls. I only have two female dolls. One I bought just for the sake of a code noir outfit I wanted so she is more like a Barbie figure than a developed doll concept. My other one is styled to be slightly butch or tomboyish. I also have one male doll who is styled really androgynously.

It is also probably partly because I am terrible about princess seams and boob darts. I like sewing for noodle-y bodies.

And possibly also the result of how many pieces of media have really underdeveloped female characters in addition to few female characters. So boys seem interesting just via basic probability you have like 6 to pick from for while you have like 1 or 2 girls... It is like how it is not surprising there are so many m/m fandom ships of popular shows. What do you expect when so many stories have like exactly 1 major female character and their role is probably just love interest or damsel or some boring passive role while the boys get to drive the story forward.

I try to say I am not affected by media. But that is probably lying to myself.... I literally haven't liked men with body hair ever since I watched Beauty and the Beast as a child. Lol. My aesthetics are driven by "Gaston is terrible."

    7. LMFAO!!! That's not unfair, though. :XD:

That about media affecting that sort of thing does have a bit of weight to it, from what I've seen-- although I've only seen very, very unofficial studies and such conducted. I wouldn't be surprised if the same things are what affect our choices in what we, as content creators, make ourselves, and then for the BJD crowd who do like to shell so many male characters, end up shelling so many boys!

And then people who do want stronger female characters will make content with stronger ladies, and those BJD collectors who shell their characters will shell their stronger ladies.

I don't think I'm phrasing myself properly, unfortunately. I mean that the reasons for why we get the dolls we do are myriad-- maybe some people do choose according to "I find this type of person attractive, and this doll meets those standards, so I will buy this doll", and others are "This doll looks like my character, so I will buy this doll to customize into my character".

And all are good reasons. :kitty1

    8. Idk I'm Pan and I don't think it really makes a difference for me.. my dolls are all femme, but I'm not opposed to masculine dolls.... Just gotta find one that suits my fancy~

That's an interesting question though.. I know my dolls' personalities are influenced by my views on gender though.

    9. Cis female grey ace who just doesn't find sexuality to be a particularly compelling subject.
So given that, no... I don't pick sculpts for my collection based on that.

    10. Straight female here. I have my first doll on the way who is female. Most of the other dolls I want are female as well. I just dont like the vast majority of male sculpts. They all look really angry or mean or evil. I would buy a masculine but kind looking male in a heartbeat. Especially if he is close enough in size to the doll I have ordered.

    11. I'm cis-female and close to asexual. I lean straight but have no interest in dating. I have slightly more female dolls than males, and three of the guys are bishonen. I have 3 straight couples and a gay couple. There are two women who are more like me- "Dating? Romance? No thanks." Part of the gay couple is one of the more feminine looking guys who's gender non-conforming. A lot of my dolls are fantasy dolls, and sometimes the fantasy part is what drew me to them regardless of gender.

    12. I'm hetero with a creeping realization that I'm very much attracted to women, so I guess I'm not entirely hetero? I tend to be torn between making my girl dolls all casual and covered with leggings, sweaters, and cardigans, by FeerieDollAtelier ir Ttya for example, or over-sexualizing them with stuff that shows their nipples, or go straight for "miniskirt, fishnet stockings, and the tiniest of bralette". In fact, I'm assembling a diorama/story for my tinies that is basically a brothel just so it makes sense for them to be in various states of undress :dance Did a very NSFW photoshoot with my Momonitas and an Obitsu.

As for my guys, I keep them very casual, metrosexual at best. Jeans, sweaters, tees, or button-down shirts, sneakers. Stubble is a must. I don't put any cute bracelets, pastel colours, or long hair on them.

    13. I'm straight & female. I do have eye-candy guys LOL but I do believe I've as many female dolls as male. I'm trying for a realistic group of characters. I've a gay couple (two of them actually) & a lesbian couple. So I certainly don't let my own sexual preferences dominate my doll choices :D

    14. I don't think sexual orientation has anything to do with whether you like dolls or not. Personally, it's more of a personality trait. I know from the start I love dolls. When I was a kid my mother won a CPK at a Sunday Carnival and she gave it to me. Growing up, our family was poor and can't afford any toys or electronic devices so I spent my free times making paper dolls for imaginary play. Some days my sister will bring her friends over to hold a Barbie tea party. And that's why I love dolls. I love the the imagination play, the stories we create in our head, and character building.

    15. This thread is making me feel all the more welcome in this community. I had no idea there were so many asexual individuals in the bjd hobby, and this is honestly making me come to realize how welcome I am here since I am too. I can't help but feel as though there may be some correlation here as asexual individuals aren't super common, yet it seems to be a norm around here. Maybe we feel more inclined towards this hobby? I don't personally know of any other ace individuals in real life, so I can't say for certain.

    16. I do think it affects my choises too. I am a pan-sexsual or Bi-sexsual. Not that I really wanna label it. But, I do live with a man, even though I also do like the company of women.
I haven't gotten my first doll yet, but what I am looking for is the feminine beauty. And I don't care if my first doll will be male or female. But If it does become a male, he will have feminine traits or be kind of sexless. I think that feminine beauty is the prettiest one, and I think it is even more beautiful, when a man posseses some of this beauty.

    17. I'm bisexual and I mostly buy male dolls. I don't really get the sex appeal in dolls - male or female, non sexed dolls, etc.
I just prefer male dolls as I'm picky about sculpts, and there aren't a lot of female sculpts that I take a liking to. Plus, I like big dolls (70cm +) and that makes female dolls that big harder to find, imo.

    18. I'm a pansexual female and atm I have 1 male doll, 5 female dolls and one doll on a male body, but the character is of a genderless specie that can change their appearance at will. I don't think my sexuality has too much to do with my doll preference, I just buy what I like and what I consider a suitable shell for my RP characters. (that being said, all my dolls atm are on the feminine scale style-wise, but that is just how it's panned out with character importance, doll availability and doll money.. haha)

    19. I have almost equal numbers of male and female dolls (actually, they're perfectly balanced if you count the anthro), but I don't think it has anything to do with my sexuality. My dolls shell my role play characters, and while I might find some of them pretty, I don't really have any attraction to any of them. I've also got a pretty good range of sexual orientations among my dolls, but again, it's just kind of whatever feels right for the characters. For the most part, their sexuality isn't all that important in their stories. So, for me personally, no, I don't think my orientation has anything to do with my doll buying choices.

    20. EDIT: For context about some of the things I mentioned below, this post was originally in a topic specifically asking about what your sexual orientation is and if it affects what dolls you own, or something to that effect. That topic was merged into this one.

I'm a straight guy. About as straight as it gets. Like, if someone's gay, whatever, it doesn't really matter to me, but guys do nothing for me.

My dolls are mostly mature women. My sexual orientation influences my interest in those kinds of dolls because... I like mature women. I think my mature dolls are attractive, but it's like an attractive anime character or something. The fact that they're attractive appeals to my straight male interests, but that doesn't mean they're necessarily depicted as all sex all the time.

I think the more interesting aspect about my interest in dolls isn't strictly my sexual orientation but my interest in nonheteronormative subjects. I like action packed video games, auto racing, heavy metal music, pro wrestling, all of these manly things, but I also enjoy romance novels, manga for women, and appreciating women's fashion. The whole women's fashion thing is a real hoot for me because, if I can use one of my dolls as an example...

I can both enjoy such a sight as... well, let's not mince words, a buxom, shapely, sexy woman with an attractive face and luscious lips that I find appealing for the usual straight male reasons... and as someone who would say "Wow, she looks fabulous. Her skirt and top fit her very well, and her hairdo accentuates the very feminine features of her face and upper body". And the latter is something that I think is really important to me. For a long time, I didn't really understand that part of myself. I knew I had it, but I didn't really have a creative outlet for it. I'm not a crossdresser or transsexual, so actually dressing up in such clothes would not feel right for me. However, my dolls gave me the perfect creative outlet to explore women's fashion and express myself with women's fashion through my dolls.

If my sexual orientation directly affects my interest in dolls in any particular way, it's that I don't want male dolls in my collection. I've seen lots of cool male dolls, but they just wouldn't fit into my dolly world because they don't appeal to me like my female dolls do. A secondary way is that my dolls also tend to be lesbians. That kind of combines the typical heteronormative male "lesbians... nice :thumbup" and the less typical interest I have in depictions of love and relationships. Those romance novels and manga? I read a lot of lesbian stuff. Yeah, I'm really a straight guy, but I love lesbian fiction. I even like the stuff that's not smutty

Since I saw people talking about the... finer details of doll depictions of sex organs :sweat While I enjoy the nipples and the vaginas and everything, even as a straight guy, I never really understood what they were doing on BJDs. I don't really need erect nipples and little slits between the legs on my dolls. It's not like I don't appreciate such things, but that isn't what I got into dolls for. Even though I don't mind it on my mature dolls (sometimes I even like it and work it into photos and outfits), it actually makes me so uncomfortable when it comes to the subject of my final paragraph below that I try to never remove the underwear of those dolls.

One more thing I should touch on is my dolls that would be little girls. They're little girls. They're their own thing. I've had enough people call me a pedophile over dolls that have large breasts. I don't need anyone saying I'm a pedophile for having little girl dolls. I think they're cute and sweet, but the way I like them is in an entirely different way from my mature women. If anything, my little girl dolls fulfill my own fathering instincts.
