Gender Preference?

Feb 16, 2017

    1. I started out with only girl dolls, liking the variety of clothes available for them and generally finding their faces more appealing. But now I've got my first boy and I'm kind of addicted! My only hope is that there's clothes I like for him out there :sweat

    2. Definitely boy bjds, for me. I think part of it is because I was always sad as a kid that my Ken dolls were way uglier than my Barbies, with tackier clothes…so this way I finally get to have handsome male dolls! I also like androgynous dolls, but I lean towards more-masculine ones for the same reason. My 1/6th scale bjd is a mostly genderless character, with a sculpt that can come as a boy or girl, but I usually get more boyish clothes for them.

    3. Definitely boy dolls for me, too. When I was a kid, I did't play with Barbie dolls. And now although I've seen some cute and beautiful girl bjds, I just won't buy a female doll. Maybe it's because I prefer masculine costumes and cool stuffs.

    4. i don't think i have a preference, other than the fact that i don't like large busted dolls at all or overly masculine ones! i have one boy sculpt and one girl sculpt so far.

    5. I tend to buy more boys than girls for some reason...
I think (if I counted right) that I have about 22 girls and 30 boys currently

    6. At the beginning I only planned to own male dolls but I also have a girl now. For me, it depends on the characters I want to shell (mostly boys/men but now and then a girl, too). Since I am very new to the hobby, I don’t own that many dolls at the moment but my next one is definitely going to be a boy again :3

    7. I prefer female sculpts by a lot. Male bodies are usually pretty built, and the head sculpts rarely appeal to me. I have seen maybe two or three male bodies I actually liked.

Characters, though - I'm gender bending at least four, likely five, of the dolls I have planned, so the listed gender for sculpts is like a suggestion to me.

    8. I definitely prefer girls... I’m sure it’s because I really love pinks and girly colours! I really enjoy sewing clothes in cute fabrics, and anything shiny or glittery is automatically going in my basket :’) however, I’ve recently found an anime style boy in an unusual size for my collection and I can feel myself falling in love! So who knows, the boys may be swaying me :)

    9. A few months ago when I first got interested in BJDs, I was looking for first dolls, and I found myself way more interested in male sculpts - I think this is because I have way more male characters that I want to shell into BJDs than female characters.

    10. I've had male and female dolls, but my girls seem to be taking over, so I guess that's a subconscious preference?

    11. I don't know if I can say I have a male BJD preference because I also love my female dolls. I love dressing my female dolls up in cute dresses etc. But I think for me there may be a psychological reason why I like the male dolls so much. I don't really call myself a transgender person, nor do I like much calling myself an agender person. I don't like putting lables on myself. But I just learned that in the transgender community a large number of people are on the autism spectrum. I was diagnosed with Aspergers about 3 years ago, and struggle with a lot of dysphoria, discomfort with my biological body. I don't want or feel comfortable with transitioning and have not changed anything about myself, but the feeling of not being who I wish I could have been is painful. So I get drawn to the male sculpts a lot.

One of my grails is to get that one realitic androgyneous male doll that reflects how I feel on the inside. When I see certain faces I think, " wow I wish that could have been me." Currently I want a IH Lawrence, but the only problem is that I want him on a SID body and Iplehouse do not offer that head sculpt for the SID body :(

    12. I like them both, right now I I have 3 girls and 3 boys and one baby doll.

    13. I have almost all males when it comes to BJDs, and almost all females when it comes to fashion dolls. To me, female fashion dolls are more unique than males (and obviously there are more of them in production anyway), but for BJDs, there seem to be so, so many unique and beautiful guys. There are beautiful girls, too, but if I'm going to spend that much money I'm going for a male doll.

    14. Although I have both male and female dolls, I have many more males than females. I think it's because there wasn't much choice in male dolls before bjds. I had to try and make do with Ken dolls, and they were VERY limited in the early days, and still didn't get much variety until the last decade. I think because I'm female, it's more fun for me to play with male thing--clothes and outfits and dolls. Again, because it's something new and different and something I haven't been able to do much before bjds. --And I kind of prefer male characters, even in books and stories. Probably, again, because I can get the female experience on my own!

    15. I prefer girls for sure! I am really into yosd sculpts so most of the boys just end up looking like girls anyways... They're still super cute I just think girls are a bit more fun to dress up!

    16. I don't have preferences yet (even tho I'm in the hobby for a long time, I still don't have my first doll) but I'd love to have a doll when I could just switch from boy to girl and to the other side. I think I don't like reaaaally feminine dolls and really masculine.

    17. I find myself more "attracted" to the boys. I squee over them a lot more, see more personality in them, etc. But, I find myself more engaged as far as art and creation goes with the girls. So while I might find a boy doll to be more attractive, I'd be more likely to wanna sew outfits and accessories for a girl.

    18. At the moment it's a good 50/50 split,I originally I only wanted boy dolls but my boys were getting lonely and I had to buy some girls. I think I like the girls more at the moment, only because there are more clothes options and wig styles available. I can always find something for a girl to wear but the boys are harder for me to shop for.

    19. for MSDs I dearly prefer boys but SD size and beyond all girls <3

    20. Boys! I love street fashion so my boys will be my models lol

edit: as of 2022 my girls now vastly outnumber my boys :aeyepop: they're just so fun to dress and girls are so pretty lol
