Girls view on guys who own BJDs

Oct 26, 2010

1. As it is an honest discussion, I am oevrwhelmed by stereotypes and my first thought would be "he might be gay". I would not date such a guy, really.
I tend to stay away from gender discussions, but I would be worried if my son had such a hobby.

2. Personally I don't have any particular opinion on the matter. I mean, for me, there should'nt be any difference between guys and girls in the first place; what I see is not a "guy or girl playing with dolls" but a "person playing with dolls".

3. it doesn't matter what the guy's gender preference anyway, anyone can collect bjds. i also know some straight guys who are into this hobby, i find it cool actually.

4. I'd just like to express my views of being a straight male collector of BJD.

First of all, I have never had an inclination towards other males, and plan to keep it that way. Personality wise I think most would classify me as more effeminate in nature. I prefer to avoid disputes, soft spoken, has a doll hobby? Unfortunately this also sets up a lot of gay jokes with me amongst my coworkers and just for laughs I play along on occasion. Hey it's trying to make the best out of your stressful work day right? I even dress stylish when I can and often go shopping for clothes together and we ask each others opinions in terms from the other gender. Even my body is slim such that my waist is narrower than my hips... feels quite easy to do this being an asian.

However, I'm male. I'm also working full time so my interests can't make me stay up late at night, investing in stocks for future investments, taking care of bills, teaching chinese lion dance during the weekends. I also love martial arts and a black belt in karate. So I have commitments I must attend to and unfortunately my doll hobby lives around it.

In the end, I don't care how you view me as I'll keep doing what I want and where my interests take me. It brings me happiness to flesh out my character image that I had in my mind for years into a doll.

5. Definitely appreciated, it's very nice to see guys who are interested in something that women are as well, it's very rare to see a hobby in which both genders can enjoy. Although I do have to say some of their fashion choices are kind of strange.
What I don't appreciate is when the dolls are (for a lack of a better word) exploited, although everyone has an equal right to what they do with their doll.

@Finaljc Good for you for being proud of who you are, it's very nice. :)

6. I think it's awesome with guys in this hobby! Mostly because I view most guys as the type who would never have dolls, or that they might be afraid to admit it or do it, because of what others might think, so I think it's brave in some way to admit it, and I think it's awesome that it isn't just girls, because it can get a little boring with girls only. I only know one guy in Denmark who owns a doll, so it's very rare for me, so I find it very amusing! :D
Keep being in the hobby! >w</

7. Everyone is welcome the the hobby or what they love, regardless of gender. My first articulate doll-before I know BJD exist-was and still is a GI Joe (hardly into Barbie).

8. I always get really excited when I see male doll owners. I think it's great that they do what they love despite the social norms.

9. I'm so happy I came across this topic because yesterday I asked my mom and nana about how would they feel if I met someone opposite gender of me and it just so happens he collects dolls as well. Well I didn't even get to revel in how awesome that would be because they instantly shot that thought down and said that he would be a "fairy" or a "poofter". Basically saying that he would be gay and if I brought anyone male in the house like that they would not accept it.

Personally I don't think there should be a "dolls are for girls" view on things. But sadly there is and society standards don't help one bit. I have known a few people that I have encountered that are male and collect BJDs and they have inspired me to get my first one. A hobby doesn't make one's preference.

Finaljc: Whoot!! It's always nice to see a proud male bjd owner. Now if only you could give a little "speech" to my mom. >.<

10. Pfft. Totally not always the case. I'm extremely straight, covered in tattoos, and have a huge resume of very manly hobbies. I regularly fix people's cars for them, modify my own, and have a blast building radio controlled airplanes that'll go well over 100mph too.
Just so happens that BJD collecting is one hobby I'm into that might not be as "manly" as the rest, haha. I'd gladly tell your mom how although stereotypes are true quite often, there are always exceptions! ;)

Ladies - I'm single too, btw :wiggle:XD:

11. I have a lot of respect for guys who collect BJDs~ when it comes to this hobby they are given the hardest time.

During my college days, I had a male friend (straight, now married with a baby on the way) who was into this hobby and couldn't care less about what others thought/said about it. Our friends gave him a really hard time and teased him about being gay ~ but he would just turn the other cheek instead of getting angry. That was really awesome.

12. After seeing how into the hobby I am, and seeing some of the dolls I'm considering (and people's mods), my boyfriend has taken a fancy to getting a pair of BJDs. One to be Fluttershy and one to be a Space Marine.
He wants them for art reference and also because he thinks they're attractive looking.

I don't care what he has as long as it makes him happy. He has nerf guns, airsoft guns, knives, swords, my little ponies and soon some dolls in his room. I love that he's able to display things he likes and not fear what people think of him.

13. I wouldn't ever jump to the conclusion that he was gay or even stereotypically effeminate. I'd be a little intrigued and find it a little odd, perhaps, but I'd mostly be interested in seeing if he had a similar way of enjoying the hobby as most girls do, or if it was something else that drew him (like if he was interested in learning to sculpt or something, rather than just photography) I mean, my husband thinks they're pretty, and everyone likes beautiful things.

14. Ok, Im a guy and yes, Im straight. I think I became fascinated with the dolls because of the artistic value behind them! I had heard that there are people who make these sculpts themselves and they turn out to look beautiful! Creating something is also manly, isn't it? :U
THats also why I like to make stuffed animals and even fursuits, I'm just addicted to crafts in general. Having a doll is a way to appreciate it the way that people buy expensive paintings. I'd be so honored to own a piece of art such as a BJD.

15. I see nothing wrong with it! In fact I met two very nice male doll owners at my first meet that I went to last weekend. Of course then I come home and I'm telling my parents about their meet and they decided that it was strange, weird, freaky, and they must be gay. I may have flipped a bit on them about enforcing gender stereotypes OTL.

16. I really just don't care if a male is into the BJD hobby or not; I never thought BJDs were a gender specific thing, and as a doll lover myself, can see why anyone would want to be in the hobby! :)
Now if only my boyfriend liked BJDs. I've tried so hard for him to be into it! :...(

17. My first boyfriend got into dolls and aside from that fact he was a bit strange so that's kind of tainted my view on it :( I've never met any other males that collect dolls unfortunately. I don't think it's a problem in any way though.. it's just a step away from action figures really.

18. For me its really cool that for a guy you collect bjd and well i rarely see guys with bjd's in our country but i would want to know or to have a guy friend that loves collecting bjd's and talking about sculpts, hahah. cool :)

19. As long as they are happy with the hobby hell why not. I never meet a man with dolls so far, but i think it will be a great experiences because guess mans have some other ideas of they happy then a woman has.

20. Straight male. Anime collector. With my Cardcaptor Sakura DVD-boxes I have already lost my macho image so why not collect dolls if I like them?
