Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Giving a doll as a gift

Apr 29, 2006

    1. I got a NS Dreaming Vampire Woosoo for my girlfriend who is also on the boards... needless to say she was very happy with it! :)

    2. I just ordered a Bobobie Apollo head for my best friend's Christmas present... there is no way I am going to be able to wait until Christmas to give it to her. :sweat

    3. I've purchased a Blythe for my MIL and a Momoko for my SIL but not a BJD. I was thinking of saving up to buy my niece a LaTi, she's very young right now, but when she's older she can appreciate it, I guess.

    4. No, I haven't given or received these dolls as gifts to/from anyone. I don't think a thousand-dollar doll is an appropriate gift for somebody who's not already in the hobby. And somebody who wants to get into the hobby, they'll already be into getting their own dolls anyway.

I have had the urge to buy them for some people before, though... non-doll-people who happen to like this certain style of things... some of my friends who I know would like to look at a doll like that in their house. But BJDs are just too expensive/big to be fun casual gifts. They're really a commitment. A $20-30 deluxe action-figure, that I'd buy for such a person instead.

    5. wow I didn't see this thread before XD

Yeah actually I've done it a couple of times....

The first doll I bought as a gift was actually for Uneide. It was a limited Elf Kirill but she ended up not wanting it (she was into SDs then) so I sold it and bought her a Rafito RAAM (I think that's what it's called) which is currently her Eggman doll.

The second gift doll I bought for someone was a Dollshe Saint for my friend who really could never afford one. She's not on the boards but she loves him dearly.

The third...well it was a head that I put into a giveaway run by nolavon and was sent off earlier in the year to their happy owner :)

    6. If I could convince my best friend to get into these dolls, I would be happy to get her her first doll for a christmas/birthday gift.

    7. The NaNuRi 07 I got with an order was for a friend of mine.

In any case, tho, I wouldn't buy a doll for people I knew that wouldn't take good care of a doll like this.

    8. We bought a DZ Megi for my girlfriend with my friends for her first doll, and after that she's gotten 14 more all by herself. XD Also, they did the same thing to me for my birthday, I got a MNF girl body for my drifting head. <3

    9. I would like to buy a BJD as a gift to someone close to me - since I don't have that much of difficulty getting money *just gotta work alil more*
But I don't really know anyone close to me that are into the doll hobby as much - 'course I know some that are, but they are not close to me

    10. I would dearly love to buy one for a friend, but seeing as I don't earn in USDs, that's going to be a bit difficult ;)

My first doll though is a split between myself and my father, and I dearly appreciate it since he hates dolls. :)

    11. I've giving a doll for a gift. It's a birthday gift for my friend, he seen mine and like them. I didn't get him a MSD size like my because of his parents I don't know what they would says about they son have a BJD so I got him a Yo-SD size one CherishDoll Alley White Skin her name is Hannah.

    12. I am giving a doll head as a gift. The person I'm giving it to will love her, and give her a good home, and I know that! I would rather give a head to a friend I know will love the doll, then sell it. She is a good friend of mine, and we have known each other for years, but only recently found out at a local meet that were were both into BJD's, and thus we have become even closer now!

    13. I have recieved many dolls as gifts <3 my lovely AngelRegion Ami (my first doll) was a gift from my mom, my little Cherishdoll Chubby was a gift from my best friend, and my perfect Koli-D from Angelfantasy was a gift from my dad :)
I have bought a Cifer for my best friend for his birthday in December, and I plan on getting a pocket fairy for my mom for her birthday in March :)
Theres no better feeling than giving a doll as a gift <3 if I had more money I would do it more often! I cant wait till December, lol ;)

    14. I got a limited MNF head for a friend as a gift, because she really loved the sculpt... and we weren't sure if she would be able to save up enough for a doll before they went out of stock. Giving a doll as a gift is just so rewarding. ^_^

Then, a different friend decided to give me her Domuya Fin head! She said it was karma for buying one for someone else. So I guess what comes around goes around... I was so moved when she told me that.

    15. i have never given someone a doll as a present. i guess if i had a lot more money to spare i might consider it. but it would deffinitly have to be someone i was sure would take good care of it, and i would also have to be certain that it was someone i really cared about.

i tend to not have friends for more then a year, and if i got someone a doll and we ended up not being friends i would feel guilty about spending all that money on them.

sorry about that last part, it was kind of angsty....

    16. I believe some of the appreciation for this hobby cannot be understood unless you invest in it yourself. I know that I personally recognize the value of something I've bought vs. something someone else has bought for me.

Secondly, I don't want friends/family to feeling like they 'owe' me because I gave them such a expensive gift. I know I would if someone gave me a doll.

Thirdly, getting the right doll is more important than just getting a doll. It's personal taste and I wouldn't want contention to come up if a gift doll and a friend couldn't bond.

What I have done is figured out what my friend could afford, the time frame, I've done all the research, ordered the doll and made the process as simple and hassell free as I could for my friend. I did add some clothes and accessories so they have things to play with with their new doll.

I find this to be very rewarding and has made all the difference in the world for the 3 people I've helped. I couldn't be prouder of them for their ability to make it happen.

    17. Hmm I thought I had posted here...but I guess not.

I bought my little brother a BW Yder head (which he had been wanting). It was funny because I wanted to get something for him that he'd absolutely love for his birthday but the only money I had was the money in my BJD funds...So I decided that what better to spend my BJD funds on than a BJD?

So I bought the head from a member on here. After I paid I kind of got depressed that my quest for my lovely Volks Kun was very much delayed but once Taylor (that's my brother's name) opened up the box I gave him it was all worth it. He's very very happy and I know that someday I'll eventually get the doll I've been longing for.

Oh...and he's now saving up for Kusumi's (that's what he named his doll) body now. Yay!

    18. Since the Bobobies are so cheap, I am buying a Sprite for my friend for her birthday - 21st! My boyfriend Eraknight11 and I are trying to get other friends to chip in, but if not, this is a big birthday for my friend so we will do it ourselves. It will be her first.

Personally I think giving gifts is a wonderful idea, no matter the expense. Of course I know she will take care of it. I would sacrifice my life for my friends, so eating only ramen for a couple of weeks is no big sacrifice. Yes, it means some time will be taken out of saving for my dolls, but I would rather see the smile on her face. Friends are everything and I simply could not live without them - been there, done that. I only wish I was not in college so I could buy her her dream doll.

As to owing, it is a big birthday and I know that she knows that I want nothing in return but friendship.

I also know kids whose parents have bought them BJD's, and they have a bigger appreciation than anyone I know. There are plenty of people on DOA who got dolls as gifts - just read the thread! - and they certainly have just as much appreciation and love as anyone else. I worry that this sentiment will cause a feeling of elitism, and some owners thinking they are 'bigger BJD lovers', which is totally against the goal of a friendly community.

    19. My friends and I are trying to get money together to buy a Wishel for my friend's Christmas present. It's kinda funny, since she claimed to hate bjds for a long time, and thought they were horribly creepy... and then one day, she admitted she loved tinies. And she adores Wishels.

Soo.... a Wishel it will hopefully be.
