Giving a doll as a gift

Apr 29, 2006

    1. Yes, but so far they are all off topic dolls so I can't list them here. I buy dolls for my nieces all the time and for friends sometimes if they collect. Usually not very expensive dolls, but yes, I have been known to gift if I know someone wants something and I can afford it just then.

    2. No, but i would love to if i had the money to buy dolls for others. My best friend wants to get into the hobby and i really want her to to, but sadly she lacks the funds to do so. I keep telling myself if I ever win a large sum of money I shall buy her, her first doll.

    3. If it was for my mother...Heck yes. I wouldn't hesitate in a heartbeat. I'm considering doing that for her for X-mas but it'd be a restoration doll project too, to make a gothic witch for her.

For my friend? ...She can buy her own dolls.

    4. I have done this a few times now both intentionally and unintentionally. Sometimes I will buy dolls for my friends. Other times I have an extremely habit of impulse buying then realizing I got a doll I didn't actually want. Instead of selling it, I give it away another doll owner or somebody who really wants to get into BJDs in the city. We don't have much a BJD community down here, so I like having the chance to help create one. (o:

I have also received a doll as a gift. My friend was kind enough to get me a NS Glati/Beyla for Christmas. <33 It was very kind of her since I had been wanting one for awhile in that specific hybrid and skin colour. He will forever be a permanent addition to my family. ♥

    5. I'm at the moment considering buying one for a good friend who's getting married this year. She is normally freaked out by dolls with glass eyes, but she really liked my Rena and said she didn't look creepy at all. I haven't chosen one yet, but since she loves animals, maybe a cute anthro?

    6. My sister gave me my first Pipos Charlotte! I really love that doll, and it was a wonderful gift.

    7. I think that is a really nice gift, you could make it all cute! Just as an aside, don't forget the partner, if you are not going to give a "couples" gift, you might want to think about a doll couple? Anthros as a couple? Could be super cute...

    8. I've thought about giving on of my dolls to my friend. The only thing holding me back is how expensive the hobby is. I know she doesn't like to spend a lot of money. ;-;

    9. Well I gave a doll leaves blue head to a friend from gaiaonline, and an angel of dream chi head to my best friend for christmas, and my friend [yeucheri here on DoA] since she is so kind as to illustrate me and my boyfriend's novel as a webcomic I gave gifted her a dream of doll tender libra head as well as a garden of dolls nabiya elf whole doll! And right now I am working of turning my dream of doll lahoo head into a character from another good friend's webcomic and as soon as I am done I plan to gift him to her! Also my darling boyfriend bought me my dollzone mo, akira for my 2oth birthday, my angel vof dream lan for our first anniversary, and my resinsoul mei for my 22nd birthday and then I bought him his 5stardoll girl for his 26th birthday! I was also gifted my little monica kliff head as a raffel prize in the california coast bjd convention last year and plan on purchasing a doll head to donate to them to use as a raffel prize this year to say thank-you! I have also given away a plethora of wigs/eyes/clothes to many people!

    10. A few years back during Mother's Day, I gave my mother a Lati Yellow Grown-Up Pury and she literally cried because she was in awe of its beauty and the thoughtfulness of the gift. It's the only BJD she owns but she cherishes her, it was really wonderful to share the hobby with my mother who took on learning how to sew for her little girl and getting me involved. :) And now when I travel back home, my Latis will always have a guest friend to hang out with!

    11. I bought a RS Song for my friend last year for christmas, this is her first and only doll~ She loves him :D he was worth every penny!

    12. I know this is sort of an iffy issue - it's a huge investment, and of course there's the matter of knowing what the recipient wants. But I did this once, with my mom...and the way I did it, I think it worked pretty well: I got a fairly basic AoD MSD girl and gave her to my mom with the caveat "She can be whatever you want. I'll customize her, and we'll find whatever wigs or supplies she needs."

Over the years, the doll went from being the sort of "hippie girl" I'd originally dressed her as to...a J-rocker. (Yeah, my 55-year-old mom was apparently aware of J-rock and really loved that look.) That doll was a shared project with Mom and me, and it was so much fun to work together on her. It was really a mother-daughter bonding experience. Mom and I have always been creative types and have done a lot of hobby work together (scrapbooking, crafts, sewing) and it was so much fun to work on a doll together.

So have you ever given a doll as a gift? Would you? What would the circumstances need to be? (These days I'd really need to know what someone's dream doll was, and honestly I'd probably be open about it - not a surprise gift, more of a "tell me what you want and I'm going to get it for you.")

    13. I would. I'd probably get it for my mom for Christmas along with whatever other gift she'd want. It wouldn't be a Resin doll though. My mom would NEVER want me to spend that much money on her but an OT doll she'd be okay with. I'd still do whatever I'd need to make it perfect for my mom.

    14. I'm currently working on a doll customized for one of my friends, i sent her sketches of the planned faceup and wig ideas. But the rest of the doll is a suprise, thankfully i know her well enough it should turn out just fine :3 I may also be buying one of my other friends a doll too. Just gotta find the right head

    15. It's cool to hear from other people about this. :) Right now, I'm selling a doll to a friend, so it's not really a gift...but I'm giving her a huge discount, so I guess it kind of is. It's really fun to collaborate; I'm customizing the doll a bit for her (faceup and I may make her a dress) and it's really cool to hear her ideas. This will be her first doll, and it is sooooo exciting! (I did warn her about BJD Angst, the phenomenon of staring at a LE doll set and sobbing over lack of funds for it...)

She wants the doll to be a little Victorian girl, so I'm using the wigs, eyes, and fabric that I have lying around to put together something close. :) We're both thrilled; I'm getting a bit of money and the doll is going to a good home, and she gets to get started in the hobby with a good doll. ^_^

    16. Indirectly LOL
My good friend said that I could pick a gift for myself and he'd pay for it
So one of my Resiner was a gift

This year I am getting Ryoma

    17. I have given a doll to a friend instead of selling it on and the same can be said for my mother who saw my doll and said I want it lol.

    18. Actually my very first bjd was a gift, he is my lovely Cain, an AoD Wang Zi. I was very surprised to get him, my friend and I had looked and pined over a few bjd's many years ago, but back then I didn't have the money for one. Then in time I had more or less forgotten about them sadly. Then when I went to visit (she was in a different state) She pulls out this box and inside was my boy. I have to say it was probably the best gift I have ever been given! I plan on returning the favor to her :) We have also gone in to split the cost of giving another one of our friends her first doll, who will hopefully arrive soon.

    19. AmayaBambi - You have a Wang Zi? That's so cool - because when I customized Mom's AoD girl, she said "I want her to be more androgynous. Can we get a boy head?" So we shopped around, and the head she chose was...a Wang Zi! She's now mine, a pop-punk girl named Hunter, but yes, her head is a Wang Zi mold.

    20. Hanne Harper - That is so cool! My friend was afraid I wouldn't like him, but I love his face, well in your case her face lol! Also I would love to see pictures of her!!
