1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Giving your doll a story.

Feb 13, 2010

    1. Wow, interesting point on this thread!!!
I tried to put my doll in a specific story arc before he comes home. But until now, since he has been at home for more then a year, I've realized that I had switched his living background many many times and I actually can not remember all of them= =||| I actually tried to creat different story arc and choose the best fit among them.
Now, all my dolls at home are in a same background. I felt that now if I can't come up with a character for the doll, I'm not getting it because there would be no purpose for me having it. That's probably a good way to slow down having more and more dolls, isn't it? :-)

    2. It was always my only talant to create the stories. So when I interested in BJD it opened to me a new horizon of creative work. For me doll's story is the most interesting part of hobby. Without a story dolls are only beautiful sculptures.

    3. I like my "beautiful sculptures." :) I have no interest in a backstory. Only two of my dolls even have names. I love the look of the dolls, and I love to design and sew clothing and props for them. I like to pose and arrange them.

Not everyone in this hobby is into character creation. :) If you're not a story-writer, don't feel like you HAVE to participate in that aspect of the hobby.

    4. Hmm, honestly, I don't really create a background for pretty much any original characters I create/ones that I'd like to turn into dolls (unless I plan to write a short story with them, but that's just about never). I give them full names, ages, birthdays, sexualities, etc., but not backstories. They're just a bit hard to come up with for me. OTL

    5. Saki has a background story but this is only because he started out as an original character in one of my comics. Then I found a sculpt for him that I liked, so he also "became" a BJD. Haneul does not have a back story, as he didn't come out as an original character prior to me buying his sculpt. I'm thinking of making a comic on him though, once I'm done Saki's. I don't think any of my dolls will ever have background stories, if they aren't used in a comic or something.~

It all depends on the person though. You can choose to have one or you don't have to have one. C :

    6. Being a writer, it's very important to me that my dolls have a character and story. I've built a story that they all fit into together, so it also give me writing practise :) I enjoy both hobbies more this way

    7. At first, it seemed a little odd to me that some people had such well-fleshed-out stories for their dolls (who their parents are, where they grew up, what they do now, what their hobbies are, sexuality!? before I got into BJD's I don't think I ever considered the sexuality of any of my dolls!). Now, I find myself thinking of what a doll's "look" will be, based on what the sculpt 'says' to me, in terms of what kind of 'person' this is. It helps me think of what kind of faceup I want for the doll, and what kind of wig & wardrobe they'll have.

    8. I do have backstories for both of my dolls, but it's nothing too deep or dark I suppose.

    9. When I was younger I refuse to give my dolls a back story just because I was not creative enough to do so. But now, that my personality and mind has mature I have notice that I give my doll a little bit of a back story and character depth. It helps when you're making their clothes and etc.

    10. I believe that BJDs were almost create to have stories. They are so customizable that they almost beg to be given personalities, relationships and their own lives. My girls are definitely going to have stories when they arrive.

    11. I've made stories and role played for basically my entire life, so for me to fully engage my dolls and work with them I feel like they need a personality and story. So far I've found it hard to give life to a doll who wasn't a pre-existing character of mine but working with my long time characters has gone alot better. I can have a doll without a story but at the same time I find I feel less attached to them usually but more importantly I find it harder to work with them - I dont' know what to do with them for photoshoots and clothes. Not to mention interactions at meet-ups, I find they're more fun if there's some personality rather than just dolls sitting side by side. A matter of preference depending on your reason for collecting and your style I suppose.

    12. Sometimes, yes. I love to create background stories. But I'd rather wait for the doll to arrive, learn to live with him, get his personality out, and then write down the story~ ^^ rather than FIRST create THEN choose a doll that will fit the story... >.> Some of my dolls don't own backgrounds... I let them just be "them". ^^

    13. My dolls all have stories, personalities and backgrounds. I like them to because I like the added layer to their characters. Each doll inspires its own story that I write specifically for them.

    14. All my dolls have a background story and a profile. I have so many dolls that the story is essential part of my bond with the doll and those dolls who don't have a story or the story isn't good enough might end up sold.

    15. I must say I never thought of giving my doll a story.

I think as time goes on her story, which is not yet revealed, shall change much like a kitten's name vs. a cat's.

The story is there but so changed from the start.

    16. Most of my dolls are pre-existing characters for a story I created in my mind so some of them do have a story. Some were created after liking a certain mold and their story came to me so that it would fit with the one I already have.

But I do not feel they all need a story because then I have to follow it and it really restrict about anything I could do with them. they are dolls that represent characters I made up and I really like the Idea of doing anything I want with them without having to follow whats going on in their story....

Its pretty hard to explain... xD

    17. All of my dolls have stories before I purchase them... I actually can't bring myself to get a doll with no story. Granted, most of my dolls are "character dolls" (modeled after characters in anime/manga), but this is true of the "original" dolls as well; when my BFF and I decided to order our DZ Megi twins, we spent the entire preceding weekend developing their story further. Since they haven't arrived yet, we're still polishing it. :3

    18. actually when i get my own bjd i will definitely make a story and a background on which i will decide on his/ hers character

    19. I do give my dolls a background story.
Either I see dolls that fit one of my already existing characters, or a character for them evolves around them.
Plus, I love drawing and writing, so having stories for them is a fun thing for me to write and think up by myself :)

    20. Eventually, I decided I needed some sort of story for the dollies, since I ended up shutting them away for more than a year when I tried leaving them as pretty pieces of resin. :\

Creating stories is what keeps me in the hobby, I guess. It gives me something to do with the blessed things, after having spent so much on them. XD Lately, though, I've been feeling a little confined by the story, so I'm wondering if I should switch to episodic little tales where the characters are mutable depending on the needs of the particular tale... might be a bit confusing for the people who've been following the story, though.... haha~ Though, to be honest, I've actually already started to do that... hahahaha....
