1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Going Into Debt For Dolls - are the potential long-term consequences worth it?

Jun 15, 2008

    1. I would think you'd have to have a serious spending problem and very poor financial skills to go into debt buying dolls. I would never let myself fall into that, but I would feel bad for anyone who did. It would be very clear to me. "That person has a problem that needs to be fixed before they throw their life away." I always keep in the back of my head that if things went bad, I can always sell my dolls to get some extra cash. That is one good thing about BJDs. They usually retain their value and that is a good thing.

    2. I've been in the fandom for quite a long time (ten years) and sadly in that time I have seen people go into debt because of dolls. I think that this can turn into an addiction just like something like gambling can. Or actually, a better comparison would be a shopping addiction. When it gets to that stage I think that an intervention is prudent. I have had to sit down a couple of friends before and tell them that they don't need that new doll, but they do need to pay rent.

    3. I honestly think I could get into trouble if I don't watch myself. Maybe I have a bit of an addictive or obsessive personality. I know I'm a "completionist." If I have an idea that I need a set of dolls to complete a story or doll family, I want them all now-right-NOW. And, of course, they all have to be wigged, eyed, and clothed appropriately. It's something I have to guard against.

For this reason, I won't buy dolls or accessories on credit, and I won't spend money I don't already have. Even for my current layaway purchase, I already have the money earmarked for it in my account. I'm just anxious about releasing large sums of money all at once through PayPal, especially to overseas, so...layaway lets me dole it out in smaller chunks. Paranoid, probably, but it makes me worry less about the transaction.

tl;dr: For me the money has to be there before I feel like I can spend it. Credit should be for emergencies, not everyday expenses or hobbies.
