Hands, Jointed or Set?

Aug 4, 2010

    1. I'm not a huge fan of jointed hands... sometimes I find the joints overly distracting. They don't always look bad, but I've seen some dolls that just do not look good with the jointed hands.

I prefer having set hands, in nice, natural shapes and poses.

    2. It's very nice craftsmanship but it's a little overdone for me ; it reminds me of those wooden model figures used for drawings ...

    3. I love the idea of jointed hands, but by far Soom has the best aesthetic, but they are unfortunately limited and for 70cm dolls, I haven't been quite satisfied with the hands by other companies.

    4. I love jointed hands, I find that they can sometimes make an entire image come alive simply through the expressiveness of the hands. I also agree with some of the previous comments that the joints can be very distracting, but I believe that as long as the focus of the image isn't on the hand, it can only serve to complement (:

    5. Though I love my Soom jointed hands like mad, they aren't for every doll. I find I've been putting the hands on my more aggressive/active/outgoing dolls that express themselves by doing, touching, motioning and working, instead of using them with my more passive and quiet characters, who for me benefit from hands in fixed positions. Maybe someday there will be a more dainty pair of Soom jointed hands that will be more fitting for women/weaker men. The thing that bothers me about my jointed hands is that the fingers twist around so easily that sometimes you don't realize that a finger is turned the opposite way until you've already taken the set down/gone home and begun editing.

As far as brands of jointed hands, I'm afraid that after owning a pair, Soom has my heart and I won't be defecting from them. I have yet to be as pleased with the designs from the other brands like Unidoll, Dikadoll and Dollzone because they just look kind of chunky and stylized in my opinion. There's also something going on with the first knuckle, the one acting as the joint where the metacarpals meet the phalanges, on the other brands that bothers me. It looks to me almost like the fingers are just sitting on top of the hand, rather than appearing to be as a whole. I can't explain what exactly it is, I think it's that the way the joint is constructed disrupts the flow of the hand too much, whereas Soom hands actually have a very thin layer of resin extending a little beyond the metacarpal over the phalanges to make the change between the two less drastic.

    6. Uuuuugh! I really want jointed hands to go with the Minifee I'm planning to buy but there aren't any!
Dollzone seem to make the best match. But the colour seems not to match up quite so well and they're just too big for the little MNF wrists! :(

    7. I simply love jointed hands. I own a pair of Soom ones. My Tony (Iplehouse SID Lee) wears them, and they are great for holding stuff (and @Smaug: yes, he can also hold a gun with them, but he won't do that. He is more of a tool and crafty guy.). The joints do not disturb me at all. I mean, after all, these dolls are jointed everywhere. I also have a pair Dikadoll jointed lady hands. I intended them for my SID Iplehouse girl. And they are frankly very...dainty. So the problem for jointed hands is the proportion to look good. And yes, they cost a pretty penny.

    8. I love jointed hands, for a short period of time I had one pair for my sd guy. They were fabulous blushing and they are fitted quite well. But I have mixed feelings with bjd hands for msd and yosd - it looking good on bigger dolls, but so far I have not seen any smaller that 60cm doll with them and I'm afraid that it would looks odd

    9. I prefer jointed hands. I do not mind the look of the joints at all; I would much rather have the poseability. The price, however, as mentioned... yeah, that is definitely something to wince about. I think it would be worth it, however, because hands are so expressive and to have jointed ones opens up so many opportunities for posing.

    10. I've only tried the default hands for my RS Mei so far, and I do like them :) at least I think it's the default ones... Their just ordinary hands, no bent fingers or any special poses. I want some more hands in the future, not necessarily for Mei, but for future dollies. Jointed hands seem cool too, want to try some time!

    11. I'm thinking about buying the ball jointed hands but i'm not really sure if i would like them. I mean in the hands you have quite a lot of joints placed in one small body part, so i don't know if it won't disturb me in some way. Regular hands just look more smoothly but then it comes also less posing abilities...had to try it out for myself i guess.

    12. I've always wanted at least one pair of jointed hands... I've just never gotten around to getting a pair. (They can be pricey.) That, and they can be hard to find and resin match. While I like the stationary hands, the wider range you can do with jointed does give a lot more options.

    13. I love jointed hands! They can be super expressive and blushed nicely too. I'm colorblind so I don't do blushing but I've seen some that were beautiful. I imagine it's super hard to do well tho. That said, some hands are just too pretty to pack away and resin matching can be difficult if the maker of your doll doesn't offer jointed hands.

    14. I have one doll whose character is a robot, so getting jointed hands for her was really awesome! I'll also be picking up one of those extensively jointed Doll Chateau bodies for a skeleton doll down the road, but other than that, I really prefer just set hands (the jointed ones are just really too fiddly for me to bother with on the other BJDs). Any hand pose is okay with me as I enjoy the variety! :)

    15. They'd be cool, but I would have to match resin and all of that. Honestly, the plain old hands that I have right now are pretty sweet. I think my dolls have such pretty hands. It's a lot of money that I could spend on something that I might use more, like clothing or faceup supplies.

    16. I really dislike the static hands my IH EID's came with because they are too limited in posing. IH does not make jointed hands so I've ordered several sets from Alice's Collections. I know the resin will not match, nor will the wrist joints, but I will make them work by sanding and dying or whatever it takes.

    17. I really like the automaton look of jointed hands but I only have smaller dolls (in the 27 to 30cm range) and I've only found one company that make them in that size and they seem a little suspicious. I'm just not comfortable ordering from a place that sends off major "we will rip you off" vibes. So I guess I'll have to live without them.

Still I love seeing them in photos. Especially with edgy or historically clothed dolls. I tend to fan girl over anything that sets off my automaton/robots appreciation radar. :fangirl:

    18. I think with jointed hands, they depend on the character or the theme of the doll. If it was like a steampunk robot doll or something, then yes, it would look nice and appropriate, but other than that, to me they look a little weird.

It's not about the joints themselves, but the amount of so many of them and in the same place so close to each other, it's just not natural-looking and easy on the eyes, lol. I myself, and I know a lot of others, prefer dolls that look more realistic and not robotic/animesque.

So if it isn't obvious, I do prefer having a set of hands with different poses, because they give a better variety of photos when you start photographing!

If only BJD companies would make it easier on the customers to create some type of pliable hands that are attached with magnets like Fairyland does to their dolls. That way we won't have to spend so much money on different pairs of hands. It would only be a one-time payment and voila!

    19. I love jointed hands. Don't have a pair yet, but one of my dolls fell broke off every finger on one hand. I switched the broken hand with one of his alternative hands, but it feels boring. So once I get the jointed hands I will do a looot of things with them :3 So much one can do with movable hands ~

    20. I find them to be interesting. I bought an Illusion Spirit Quinlan on the marketplace, and she was sent with jointed hands; otherwise, I probably never would have shelled out the money for a pair. The fingers spin around and come out of joint really easily, but they do make for nice pictures. I told one of my best friends about the hands and they rolled their eyes an didnt believe me..so when my girl got here, I put her hand in a "flip off" gesture and sent him a pic. Needless to say, he believed me that dolly jointed hands did indeed exist. But I digress, if I could save up enough fundage, I would possibly like to get a pair for my Zombie Sol, as well as a few others, just to keep on standby for special occasions :)
