Has a particular doll sculpt ever scared you or creeped you out?

Dec 22, 2016

    1. I am so sorry but Napalm Doll's "Hush" is just... incredibly egh to me. I know a lot of people love her but :horror: I cannot bring myself to like her in the slightest.

I say this, as Dika Doll's new "Amanda.SP Smile" has me scrambling for money to buy her head... I am very, very aware she is creepy but she is creepy in a way that I love. She's got that... yandere aesthetic to her?

    2. I'm shocked. There are so many creepy sculpts out there, I didn't even know. The Miso sculpt mentioned at the beginning is creeping me out. And though I wouldn't buy myself a Mona, I think she looks interesting.
I find a lot of Miracle dolls creepy, especially the MSD sized like Vic and Zitong.

    3. Hmnn. There are a few sculpts that I've seen that I go 'Oh this could be pretty creepy' which is more of a fascination point. I'd take home a Miso or Mona no problem

    4. I havenโ€™t had a head sculpt creep me out, but some body sculpts kind of disturb me - tinies that mix mature and baby aspects almost randomly make me uncomfortable.

    5. Doll Chateau's Elizabeth. She's basically a giant humanoid spider and it really creeps me out. I found her a few days ago on accident. I'm terrified enough of spiders... I really didn't need to see one with a human body. But she's also really pretty. To me, she doesn't look like she's supposed to be scary. I love the spiderweb tattoo on her belly button.

    6. This is going to be a bit of an unconventional one, but...Granado's most recent mini releaseโ€”TimTim, Liz and Jewelโ€”kind of creep me out.

I'm not really all that fond of baby-faced dolls in particular, especially when they look like they have a bad case of the mumps, or have these about to throw a tantrum puckered-up lips. But something about the new minis unsettle me more than most others in that scale/aesthetic. Maybe it's those weirdly rounded eyes, something about the shape of the faceโ€”or a combo of the two things? I really can't describe the feeling correctly, but there's just something off about them for me:sweat

    7. All horror zombie undead looking dolls creep me out and I will never buy one. Also the old 80s and earlier dolls at doll conventions creep me out.

    8. Sleeping dolls, the ones with both eyes closed.
      They look dead to me.
I can appreciate the beauty of their stillness.
There soul is hidden from me.
Let me look in their eyes and see their souls.

    9. Dream Valley's Thorn. Intentional or not, that smile is way too creepy for me.

    10. Angel of Dream's Mu Yanzi, which I stumbled across on Alice's and had an immediate, visceral dislike of. The scrunched up, black eyes and Joker-esque bared teeth grin make it look wrong.

    11. On topic wise, only one: Notdoll's Bleu Citron.

      ...very disconcerting.

    12. The IOS Infernal doll has always made me uncomfortable. I don't like that you can take his tongue out but I don't like my other options either

I usually love doll chateau BECAUSE of how weird some of their sculpts are, but Twinkle gives me the heebeejeebees. I don't like the giant crater in her stomach. Not a fan of that one

    13. I love Mu Yanzi, BUT the faceup makes a massive difference. When it's really good she looks adorable. When it's not so good, yeah... nightmare fuel. Just pay a really good artist for the faceup and you'll survive

    14. I agree, it's the same for me. Everything where the skin sort of melts off the face and the skull is revealed underneath. I'm a big Fairyland fan but their Minifee Hwayu and Feeple60 Sia with their skull heads completely freak me out.
Didn't Ringdoll used to have especially creepy dolls where the skull is shown under the face? I remember them having two websites, one for "normal" dolls and the other for "creepy" dolls.

    15. Dolls with very toothy expressions. What's odd is that I love dolls with a somewhat open mouth, especially showing a hint of the front teeth, but big grins, grimaces, snarls, not my thing. I'm glad the folks who have them like them, but none of 'em are coming home with me!

Also not quite creepy, but smirks or impish/mean expressions (mischief is okay-ish but not mean mischief) tend to piss me off at the doll.

      I'm in this photo and I don't like it:XD:

(Sorry if I didn't quote correctly, I'm new here)

    17. Irreal Dolls creep me out. Something about how far apart the eyes are...

    18. I always think it's funny when Mu Yanzi gets mentioned in almost every hate/creepy thread because I felt exactly the same! ....until I had a roleplay character who always had a big goofy cheesy grin and laughed at everything and I realized it was perfect for him and no other sculpt would do. :sweat I'm fully aware that it's just me and like 3 other people in the entire hobby that don't cringe looking at my boy. :XD: But that's ok! I think we've all got at least one doll that we just really really do not like at all!

    19. It's funny to see smirking/mean/mischief mentioned, because without talking about specific doll sculpts I might have found creepy (honestly I tend to forget them anyway until I see them again) this is probably my biggest creep out with dolls. It's not dislike, they often make me feel sick and unsafe because they appear to be dangerous/dishonest/horrible people and that's one thing that I'm very uncomfortable with. The other general type of face that is creepy for me is the perfectly symmetrical face with too much of that stereotypical golden ratio proportion. These faces look mask-like which is very horrifying to me because I collect my dolls for their warm fuzzy feel goods or at least empathetic (for lack of a better word) emotional quality.

I would rather have kind of off-putting/ dorky big smile dolls than these other two types any day. Haha actually I think Mu Yanzi for example is wholesome and wonderful. The face has a good spirit. It's a doll and doesn't have to be perfect, that one sits just right with me too.

    20. I'm fine with most creepy-looking dolls, I think they are cool to look at (not what I collect, but I can see why someone would). I don't mind gore, teeth, extra eyes etc, I think it's p incredible where customisation can take them.

What I do mind are hyperrealistic dolls/heads made to look like real people, especially if they are without any stylisation in the sculpt. It just... it doesn't work, I'm so sorry, maybe it's the scale or resin texture, or how bjd bodies are too cartoony to match, I don't know. I also get a big ick if the doll is made to represent a real person not a character they played in a movie or whatever... I have a lot of concerned thoughts about parasocial relationships and also thinking of deepfakes etc - real person fanfic in any form makes me so very uncomfortable and I think, without consent, it's pretty unethical.

That being said, I also find that perfectly symmetrical faces have a creep factor, regardless of stylisation. A lot can be saved with a faceup there, though, but it'd not be a sculpt I'd buy.
