Has a particular doll sculpt ever scared you or creeped you out?

Dec 22, 2016

    1. I'm not sure about company or sculpt but there are those dolls with big heads and tiny eyes which are way too much to the side of the head.. I'm not sure if they even classify as bjd as I mainly see them in some 'dollgroup' i'm in that also allows other dolls. Blythes also kind of freak me out but of those I'm sure they're not classified bjd.
Aside from this, there are some doll chateau dolls that freak me out a little, but there also a lot of face sculpts I love a lot. I do not really like the DC body though..
Also as others have mentioned, Miso dolls are a bit uncanny.

I believe any doll could be beautiful in the right hands, but they are just not my type of dolls.

    2. Oh no - I feel your pain! There are a fair few things I wish I could unsee -shudder-. I know I would probably seriously regret looking up the Nefer Kane doll, but I am also curious..... I have quite a severe case of trypophobia though. Part of me thinks it might be better to prepare myself in case I suddenly stumble across it on the forum; I can see myself shrieking and running out the room or hurling my laptop if I'm suddenly confronted with it. How bad is it? :S

    3. After going through all the posts and looking at some truly unsettling dolls...my conclusion is that people creep me out way more than dolls. Thinking on dolls themselves, I'm in agreement with the poster who mentioned DC's centaur body with human feet and legs. I had the "pleasure" of seeing one in person and while it was beautifully-painted and styled, I could NOT get over the human feet on a horse body. It reminded me of a Known Space Puppeteer (CN Known Space art is really unsettling). The rest of DC's sculpts don't bother me half as much, especially since I find them too over the top to be scary. And I love spiders so Elizabeth makes me super happy. I just wish they had a male torso for that body.
As for what creeps me out: sexualized child dolls. Anything with a childlike face on an adult body is super upsetting. Especially when there are unnecessary added elements (erect nipples much!) that are literally just there to make the body more "sexy" (why would a childlike doll need erect nipples?????) It's my one pet peeve with Luts, TBH.

    4. There's only one doll-- I forget which-- where the smile creeped me out. I normally love smiley dolls, even when their smiles are a little on the wicked side, and then there was one that honestly should have just been cute, but it spooked me so bad I couldn't look at it.

I have a hard time with the Elizabeth because I do have an extreme fear of spiders. Though at least I can say it's a testament to the wonderful job they did on her spider body that I find it creepy.

And Carter is a weird one for me, because on the one hand I actually do find the sculpt very unsettling, but at the same time one of my favorite dolls that someone on the boards owns is a Carter. I love the one specific one so much, I love everything that went into his styling and character, and the base sculpt still creeps me out a bit but I can't stop looking at him because he's great. So there's a big push-pull because of that one example that I do find so beautiful-- It's like the reverse of another doll I've seen where the base sculpt is perfectly cute in a general 'nice doll' way and there's only one of them that creeps me out for some reason. There's nothing very odd about it, no gore, no mods that might make him slightly 'off', the faceup is very neutral... just this one single example of an otherwise totally fine sculpt where I get very creeped out by it.

So I guess it is possible for someone to take any sculpt I might be creeped out by and make me totally love that doll, to the point where it's one that I look forward to seeing pop up on the forums in particular. But it's also possible for some minor detail to make an otherwise sweet doll creepy.

    5. I've never been creeped out by any doll until I saw Universedoll's De'Ath. I can't even look at pictures of him, I get a weird feeling in my stomach xD I like spooky dolls, but he is just too much for me.

    6. Not many dolls get to me at all - googled the Nefer Kane Kameko and whilst I could easily imagine all of those eyes blinking in an anime, nah Bowie's done worse in his music videos.

However, having said that, the one bjd that triggers the squick factor for me if not anything visceral - the recent Ringdoll Bride of Frankenstein that was pregnant, and cross-sectioned. Nope nope nope.

Whilst I'm aware that pregnancy very much is a natural process, I have my own set of (perfectly rational thank you) phobias revolving around that particular topic and the medical issues involved, and that doll brought almost every single one of them to mind.

    7. The new AoD pregnant girl creeps me out - especially her open back where you can pull out a baby...

    8. *Quick google* Hah! Okay for all that she's got the slightly off grinning headsculpt, somehow that one isn't nearly as bad to me. Probably because there's no attempt to be anatomically accurate, unlike the Ringdoll with it's sculpted layers of muscle and epidermis.

    9. No doll sculpts actually scare me, but I'm rather creeped out by pretty much everything from Doll Chateau and a lot of sculpts from Nefer Kane and Lillycat. I also sometimes find FL dolls' huge eyes a bit creepy.

    10. I've posted here, but something came to mind when discussion of smiling dolls got brought up.

Big grins in general don't set me off, and I don't mind a subtle, open mouth smile, or even a smirk. What does unsettle me, however...are stepford smiles. That creepy unnatural smile that looks like it's on a programmed face, or an AI with that expression frozen on it's face. Also, I've always found people in general with those kind of smiles unsettling, as---behind that seemingly pleasant expression---there's often a malicious or devious minded individual. Really puts me off. *_*

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any specific sculpts that matches this, but I'm sure they're out there.:sigh

    11. I actually like Mona a lot, at first sight I thought an ugly-crying doll was weird, but now I see it as interesting and unique so she has a place on my wishlist. Part of it may be that I'm quite emotional myself and can relate to her, she's like depression personified!
(also, I sent my bf a picture of the sculpt and his response was a caption: "WHY. Why do I keep buying stupid hats!" Dolls with dramatic expressions just evoke compulsory storytelling, I guess)

What creeps me out... I've never liked babies much, so sculpts that are too infantile weird me out. Volks SD13 is probably as youthful as I'm willing to go.

Also, inconsistent proportions. The huge, closely spaced eyes on Doll Leaves Jacqueline freak me out, they just don't mesh with the rest of the face. Granado Linca has a more opposite problem, where the far-apart eyes and small face BJD thing feels like it's been taken too far. Her eyes are so low on the head! Looks like the way I drew anime characters when I was 14.

    12. The overly sexual dolls posed in ways that I find inappropriate creep me out and make me feel uncomfortable, especially as the dolls often do not look mature. As for a particular sculpt I can't think of one that particularly gives me the creeps at the moment.

    13. I tend to seek out dolls that are slightly unsettling. My dolls with "creepy" bodies are intended to be creepy, but they don't actually get to me personally.

The ones that do get to me are any child-like dolls that edge a little too far toward sexualized. I don't mean mature 1/6 dolls that are clearly meant to be non-kids. It's hard to describe what I mean, and a lot of it has to do with the tone of promotional pictures, but it makes me very uncomfortable and I can't look at the sculpt the same way again.

    14. I absolutely love creepy dolls! With that said, I've never been creeped out by a doll sculpt, per say ...but more of what the owner has done with it. The one thing that creeped me out was adding an unborn fetus to the doll.

    15. Ringdoll Zombie Sol.

Yet he's still one of my grails. He reminds me of the Return of the Living Dead zombies.

    16. Ha
Have you ever seen Granado's Titan body? It's 77cm and really, really, muscle-ly... I understand you 100%

    17. I’m creeped out by those angelphilia tongue out sculpts. To me they look like they’re having some sort of medical crisis, and I just find looking at them makes me feel:ablah:.

Also, the dollipop ones that have little childlike faces but seem to have boobs... I mean,.. :?

EDIT: oh, forgot to add... I know they’re popular but I’m not a fan of anthro dolls, especially cats. And with human bodies and boobs, and half human half cat faces. I just don’t understand the appeal and find it a bit disturbing to sexualise animals. I don’t mind the ones that are cute pet BJDs, and just look cartoony.

    18. Disclaimer: everyone is entitled to like what they like and I am not judging anyone who owns or enjoys the following dolls but....

I REALLY don’t like Angel Philia dolls, especially if they have the huge busts. Their expressions, their bodies, their tongues, just weird me out and make me very uncomfortable.

Also, I’ve never really liked dolls with really big laughing expressions and teeth. I think it’s just too brief an emotion to be suspended in timeless doll form.

    19. I've never really found any dolls creepy--while the Doll Chateau aesthetic isn't for me, I can appreciate its beauty. I don't like looking at those exposed-spine Dollzones, but they never really upset me on a visceral level. The AOD pregnant Huixiang more cracks me up than anything. I mean, look how happy she is!

But then...I saw these Dream Valley babies. OH GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWD. This is the first time looking at a doll has filled me with so much revulsion that I can't stand to even look at it for more than a second. Maybe this is particular to me, since I have a very strong reaction to deformed babies and find nothing more terrifying. But still...I'm going to see that face in my nightmares.

    20. I was just about to make the same kind of post in this thread, but you kind of beat me to it! :XD:

Something I'll add about Angel Phillia sculpts that really puts me off (squicks me out, in other words) is the fact that some look like they're...ahem, orgasming. That perpetual O-face makes me feel bad for them, as well as bring up nasty imagery from hentai and similar dojinshi work imagery, where an anime style character is either being....um, touched in a certain way by something/someone, or they're doing that themselves. It makes me extremely uncomfortable. :horror:

(And I'm not overly sensitive to sexy stuff and raunchy material. I'm actually a pretty dirty-minded person sometimes :XD:)

Edited to add that, after reading through more of the earlier posts in this thread, I remembered another.

I find Dollshe's Manga Lala to be something that came out of the Uncanny Valley. That anime-esque head has weird proportions (something about it just seems off), the smile just puts me off for some reason....and then the more realistic looking rest of the body. I mean...wth?? This was designed for his little girl, yet...the head looks so immature (or moe, or whatever you want to call that overly youthful anime look), but the body looks like it belongs to a mature woman, a realistic woman. I'm sorry, but I just find it a bit disturbing :shudder
