Has there ever been one part of a doll that made you not buy it?

Aug 23, 2021

    1. I don’t like overly detailed bodies at all, especially an anime face on like a Michaelangelo sculpture body.

I’ve passed on a lot of beautiful dolls because of exposed ribs or spine, just not my thing.

Actually passed up a killer deal to pay more for another listing because I liked the expensive listing body’s more.

    2. Sharp blocky shelf elbows. (And knees, but you usually see this more with elbows.) Can’t stand it when a bent elbow has this strange fin or shelf sticking off the arm pieces. There have been multiple bodies that were otherwise perfect for my needs which I elected not to buy solely because of this.

    3. Pictures of a doll smoking tend to put me right off them.

If I'm lucky, it only puts me off that specific doll, but often it will put me off the sculpt as a whole.

Also child sculpts painted to look like they have heavy makeup on.

    4. Not one part specifically. One time it was the face and another the body shape. I just feel like I need to like everything about a doll to purchase it. Especially considering how much they usually cost.

    5. You know those beautiful doll lines that can’t sit up? That is the ultimate deal breaker for me. No matter how much I tell myself I can live with it because the body is beautiful… it’s too annoying and I’ll eventually sell them. I can compensate for bad standing with a doll stand, but there’s nothing to be done if a doll can’t sit naturally.

There are a lot of other things that I know from many years in the hobby I should avoid or they’ll annoy me though. Wrists that are too chunky to fit the arm and hand they’re attached to, eyes that are not only uneven in placement but in shape (a little o_O is okay, but too much just looks odd), that old school thing Volks used to do where a doll would have a defined lower lip but NO UPPER LIP so you have to draw it on (whyyyy?). There are people out there who don’t mind all of those things but I know what works for me and there are some that just don’t.

…this does not in any way mean I won’t break those rules I’ve set for myself, because that’s how this hobby works, amirite? I would’ve said no more 70cm dolls, they’re too big, but then Ringdoll put out Xie Lian, so. :arainclou

    6. In general, put me down as another one who can't deal with "mouth-breathers". I can handle a doll that has a slightly opened mouth, (the old CP/Delf Breakaways, for instance, or the sleeping Elf Shiwoo-) but much more than that? The doll becomes a solid NOPE. Especially if there's a tongue involved. I'll just never see the appeal of either exaggerated O-faces or slack-jawed gaspers with Kardashian lips.

The other thing that'll make me pass on a doll is a style mismatch between the face and body... That's something that girl dolls in general have been prone to (Very immature, "Little Girl" faces on boob-a-palooza curvy adult bodies-), but the guys aren't immune. There are an awful lot of baby-faces-with-a-ripped-ten-pack out there, too. In either gender, that kind of weirdness just makes me o_O.

    7. Unrealistic breasts resembling orange halves. Lack of realism in sculpting.

    8. Ugly jointing. My biggest problem is with knees, but there's other things too that will make me close the tab. Bluefairy added arm slit joints to all their dolls in the last few years and now I won't even consider buying one. I already disliked the double jointing look in their elbows and knees already but that arm slit is absolutely a deal breaker.

I don't think it's bad to be picky about these things though. Your wallet will thank you for not buying every doll you like.

    9. I would love to own an SD sized doll one day as they seem to have the *best* clothes out there, but their large size just doesn't work for me. The largest doll I ever had was an MSD and she was great, but she never fit my design ideas too well. I'm happy enough to look at other people's SD dolls on here :) They have the most spectacular face sculpts :D

    10. Hm, for myself...I'm not sure how to describe it exactly, but...doll bodies that have very straight lines. Like boy bodies that have rectangles as their torso shape, with no waist that is defined from their hips and chest. Or limbs that fall like pillars with no curves or relaxed angles in their resting positions. It looks too static to my eye and I can't get over it.

For second hand dolls, I always pause when I see that a doll body has been sprayed with MSC. Especially if the doll has not been blushed or given tattoos. The MSC wears and I personally don't like the texture of it, so I know I will have to remove it all. Stringing and cleaning all those pieces would be very difficult for me, so it would have to be quite exceptional for me to take it on without the appeal of a beautiful tattoo or blushing that I would want to keep.

    11. I know exactly what you mean-- I too try to avoid the rectangle torsos for the boys; but they're irritatingly common :( dollysmith's Max/Umi MSD body is the first male body I've actually liked because he has actual hips!

    12. I've had the same feeling, but also the doll judging me at the same time. "You've spent all this money on me and this trash fire is what I'm dealing with?" Not really so much as the doll being alive as it is an art piece disappointing in me having bad taste.

    13. Something that always stops me from buying a doll is single jointing. I LOVE pose ability on dolls, it’s one of the reasons I really love bjds.
So having single joints, even just low mobility, on a dolls body is a deal breaker for me.

    14. A few things:

-Large hips, especially on boys. I'm ok with hour glass girls and even very slight pear shaped girls, but the exaggerated pear and curvy boys just don't do it for me.
-Hands that are too small or childish.
      -Big beefy male bodies
-This one is really petty and kind of ridiculous, but genitals. I mostly don't care that much, but there are certain things that just put me right off buying a body, even though they'll be covered most of the time.
-And for secondhand dolls, the photos. If they're blurry, in poor lighting or I can see trash and messy clutter behind them, I tend to avoid them just because I worry about the condition of the doll.

    15. Mega boobs that make the doll look like a porn star. Just no!!!!!

    16. I am drawn to realistic sculpts. The first thing to turn me off are proportions. I hate how some dolls hands and feet just are not proportional to the body frame.

    17. Sometimes it is too long nose.
Side vews are very...difficalt to take pictures, as I think

    18. Eyes too wide, cheeks too puffy, face too squared or circular—or all the trademarks of child-like or wide-eyed youthful appeal facial features. To me, those are completely unappealing. Also, anything leaning towards more stylistic or anime-inspired in appearance. I'm just in general not a fan of short, round faces where the eyes take up most of the extant of the face, sidelining the other facial features in scale and detail.

When it comes to more specific nitpicks that can make or break a sculpt—redneck chin. Or, in other words—where there's a lack of distance between the chin and beginning of the neck. It breaks from the more realistic proportions I prefer, and just looks off-putting on top of that. Also, for bodies—no-jointed bodies and poor poseability. I can sacrifice some aesthetics, but I cannot stand a floppatron who's only purpose is to either barely sit pretty or constantly collapse into a pile without requiring some amount of modifications to remedy it.

    19. The number one thing that makes me pass on a doll is the size. A doll could be perfect to me in everyway but if it's too big I cant do it. And my standard for what I consider big is probably less then most people, I find most MSD's too big. If a doll touches 40cm or over I'll probably pass on it :(

    20. Yes... Lack of elf ears. I am pretty in love with the idea of an elf collection of bjds. While non-pointy eared sculpts are as or more beautiful, it is the lack of pointed ears that prevents me from buying!
