Has there ever been one part of a doll that made you not buy it?

Aug 23, 2021

    1. Speaking of boobs, unless I had a corset for it, I couldn't buy the corset body from Fairyland. It's beautiful, but it looks funny without a corset on.

As for small chests, I don't mind them but I prefer large ones. I'll occasionally get small but find I cannot attach very well as all my characters are large chested.
      I don't hate them though.

I will say large chests are a brat for clothing though.

    2. I have to agree with @Facethefake that lack of elf ears has prevented me from loving a doll enough to buy it.

    3. Balloon or torpedo boobsโ€ฆthey make me laugh, and then I just canโ€™t take the doll seriously!

Faces that are too realistic. I mean, I love looking at them and admiring the artistryโ€ฆbut for me personally, I need a more stylized face. I discovered this years ago when I excitedly purchased one and realized it wouldnโ€™t work right out of the box. Iโ€™m creating a fairytale world here, an escape from the harsh realities of real life. So too much realism in dolls does not work for me. Iโ€™ve learned to just admire them from afar in other peopleโ€™s collections.

    4. For me its noses. A nose that's too big or too pointy will ruin a sculpt for me.

    5. They do a corset body? Which doll is it for?

      Teddy

    6. Definitely size/scale. Any SD or even really tall MSD is out. So are mature tinies and big baby MSDs. I admire them in other peopleโ€™s collections, but they are just not for me.

    7. Eyes too big. If a head needs above a 12mm eye, Iโ€™m out. With that in mind, though, I have 12s in all the ingenue hoard, 12 si in the big eyes of my gamines, 12โ€™s in most of my feeple60โ€™s, and in my old 65, like a surprising array of dolls will take my tiny eyes. You know who wonโ€™t.

      feeple60 Chloe.

Iโ€™m bashing my head against the decision to buy her because now I have her, and I like her, but her eyes, built for 18mm eyes, really donโ€™t look right below a 7mm irisโ€”thatโ€™s a 14mm eye. So thatโ€™s frustration.

This is more a second hand MP thing, but sometimes Iโ€™ll see a doll. Beautiful doll. Great price, and Iโ€™ll go โ€œwhy are you still available?โ€ And when I click the listing the seller ships internationally, and all seems well till I realize they ship from the one country in the world I donโ€™t like to order from. Every time I order, the package justโ€ฆ doesnโ€™t track for 3-5 weeks, and the box is kind of smashed. Their country and mine donโ€™t seem to ship well to each other cause it happened to me selling to someone there as well. So Iโ€™ll pass to avoid the 3 weeks of โ€œoh god is she missing?โ€

    8. There's a few things for me.
Mature sculpts, the proportion of certain bodies and ear piercing are all things that I think are nice on others' dolls but not for me at all.

    9. If I had to guess, I'd say it's the MNF Moe-Line body with the "E" bust, where the huge tracts of land are clearly defying gravity: MiniFee a la carte GIRL (Moe Line) I have mine in an underbust corset, and bought the body because I wanted to put her in corsets, so I personally love it, but it does look very, very awkward undressed.

    10. Yes! I have always admired the Dollshe Craft Venitu. I think he is very handsome and interesting, but then I saw a side view of him on a wig site. Yipes! His neck is so wierd. LOL Now I can't look at a photo of a Venitu without picturing that side view.

It also really bugs me if a doll cannot sit up straight. I have several dolls which will not sit up straight no matter what I do, they just want to lean back as if reclining. Most of my dolls are sitting because I keep them on shelves which are not tall enough to stand the dolls up. So if they lean way back it looks weird and really bugs me.

I am suspicious of company photos where the doll's face is obscured by props, lighting, and an odd pose. It's like, what are they trying to hide?

    11. Bad boobs. I love so many of the Doll Leaves MSD sculpts, but I like a small bust and the half tennis balls they have for boobs are just so unattractive. I try to convince myself that it doesn't matter because my dolls don't sit around naked, but one of my favourite things is to enjoy the elegant lines of a doll body as I'm changing their clothes.

    12. I should have never asked what people disliked because I found out about the chest sizes. Some of them are so big, the doll could be used to deflect a bullet in a bad cop show and it would be plausible. The worst part of it is, I also collect mid to high quality action figures and the biggest chest size is nowhere near this. I only know that because it's common to buy the head sculpt and outfit while ordering a body from a suggested size list separately. You'd think that the much more expensive/classy BJD wouldn't have girls who have no organs, just boob. Not complaining, people can like what they like, but now I can't unsee what I've seen.

    13. Balloon-boobs are a big turn off for me. A lot of my dolls have small / flat chests as a result. If I have a choice, I'll always pick a smallest bust.

    14. It's the nipples that always get me. Hard resin nipples which are guaranteed to show through even the thickest sweater. I'd understand if someone made removable ones out of silicone or something, but the bubble-boobs + nipples just confuses me.

@RinSetsua I'm with you, I'm more likely to choose a flat-chest or even a boy body just to avoid it all together.

    15. Years ago Nobility Doll and NotDoll collabed on a body with silicone nipples -> Press papilla good feel (maybe NSFW?)
      I still laugh about it.

Projecting nipples on girl dolls used to bother me, but honestly, some girls have that feature irl and don't care to worry about hiding them all the time. In a doll version, it would depend on my character as to whether it'd be a problem or not.

    16. That is too funny!

In all honesty even though it's not my thing I'd never criticize someone for liking it. I'm just all about having as many customizable options as possible. So the idea of removable nipples vs. cast on means more options and versatility.

    17. Speaking of nipples, Unoa 1.0/1.5 girls with the flat chest have strangely pointy nipples. I'm not sure about other AL lines but I wouldn't be surprised if more (or all) of them did.
I always ask myself why my doll is nipping through her shirt despite being flat as a board and I laugh to myself and say "because Gentaro Araki"

    18. The boobs are a problem for me, but it's more the child faces with curvy big-boobed mature bodies that just scream World-Of-Wrong! to me. I'll hppily buy the child faced head (most of mine are children) and hybrid it onot an immature/child/nonbusty/non-curvy body (if I can find one it fits - not a lot of choice at SD size) but a child with huge boobs and a timny waist isn't going to be on my buy list.

    19. I usually spot a doll that I like overall and try to buy from other collectors first. If I can't find the doll secondhand, I'll buy it new. My buying and selling approach is more of that from a collector's perspective. I enjoy my own collection more like a hobbyist. I don't buy dolls cast in the yellow resin option as aged resin always becomes more yellow than the original pigment color. Sometimes I check out random secondhand offerings and like a doll, but there are permanent alterations that previous owners tend to do that will stop me from buying it. Intensive mods like sanding off genitals and breasts bother me a lot, so I will not buy a doll that has been treated in that way. Sanding is fine if it's to even out a chip, take away fangs, re-seat joints or to re-shape or open eye wells. I consider these light modifications. Dyed dolls are also something that will stop me from buying a doll. I prefer airbrushing over dying. Holes in the ears may also stop me, but it depends on the sculpt. I would view these changes as damage, and I would judge it as de-valued at best. I would buy a few head sculpts with drilled ear holes, but I know I would have to glue some beads on and they would have to wear earrings all the time to cover the damage. I tend to like dolls as they were intended to look by the artist that made them. If there was something very specific that I ever 'needed' so much, I'd learn to use the software to design my own original creation and spend the same amount of money on a 3D resin printer as many dolls cost.

    20. open mouth
normal looking from the front but wierd profile
