Have pictures ever turned you off from a doll

Jul 17, 2009

    1. I look at other owner doll more angel picture. I want not just side way pretty doll, I also want him to look decent from the front! ^^

    2. I keep dancing around the idea of buying a FL Minifee. The company photos are awful! They are left over from when the dolls were sold through Luts and some of them look like they have been PhotoShopped to death. Yet every time I encounter an owner photo I am amazed at how lovely the dolls really are. There was an absolutely stunning pair on eBay a few months ago. Both had artist faceups rather than FL's default makeup. I couldn't believe they were the same dolls! Too bad I didn't have any money at the time, because they sold quickly.

    3. i always try to check owner pics before i order. that has often changed my mind either way. somedolls i liked the company photo but seeing owner pics left me cold. for other's the company pics were only so- so but seeing "real" pics brought the beauty of the sculpt out for me.

    4. Owner pictures make or break a doll purchase for me, since I don't get to go to meets or anything like that where I live. Basically, I look for specific features and angles to see how they look...my biggest hate is what I call "frog mouth" those exceptionally wide lips that like take up the whole face...sometimes you can't tell a doll has it until you see it at a certain angle. Some companies do stunning pics, but the dolls are not as wonderful unless they are in perfect photography conditions/hiding the bad features. If I can't find owner pics, I wait until I can see them. Some companies I trust without a doubt, like Fairyland, and don't need to look at owner pics persay (even if I like to :P). I trust they are always as beautiful in person as on their site. I also like to see how different sculpts can look with different faceups and hair and whatnot. It helps me visualize.

    5. Yep. I sat gaping at the company photos of several Souldoll girls. Then I went looking for owner pictures and thought - nah, never. I was really surprised at that. In a way, I was kind of relieved too, because I was torn between a Souldoll Zenith Chantal and Dollzone Aurora. Seeing owner pictures of both made my choice MUCH easier. Aurora all the way.

    6. It has, I was so set on getting a BBB Apollo for my first bjd. I loved the company pictures, the blank picture, but when I saw owner pictures it just wasn't going to work. So I didn't get a BBB Apollo, and I don't think I plan to in the future.

    7. I wanted RS Mai but he never looked the way I thought he would in the owner pictures...

    8. For me it was the other way around... at first glance I liked Elfdoll's Dami but she didn't strike me the way she does now until I saw some owners' photos - with a different light, wig, and style she really looked gorgeous and I fell in love and am now just about willing to sell my first born child to own her haha

    9. Usually, it's the owner pictures that will make or break my opinion of a doll.

When FL's Chloe 65 first appeared, I was pretty smitten. But once she started showing up on DoA, and I could see more of her, I could see that she didn't appeal to me as much as I first thought.
The charm of Soom's Chrom, however, hit me almost a year after his first release, and all the gorgeous owner pictures just about drove me to distraction.

    10. It really depends.
For some companies, their promo pictures totally turn me off. (ie: souldoll - too much emphasis on deep blushing colors. Though for owner pictures with the default face up, they look amazing)

For other companies, their promo pictures don't elicit any real reaction. This causes me to just ignore them and go do other things. (such as -gasp- Soom) But then owner pictures come and I am once again wowed and return to their site, haha.

Then again, there are some owners' pictures that I don't particularly like, though, that's just one picture out of many. One or two pictures aren't going to turn me off.

    11. I've got a doll like that right now. Souldolls Shiva. I love, love her with the cat eyes, grey skin and multiple arms but all the other face-ups and skin tones do nothin' for me. Makes me wonder if I really want her or not. Except my favorite doll is the same way. I hate what other people have done with her but I Looove her fullset everything.
So I dunno. Maybe turned off the doll. Still thinking about it.

    12. Usually for me it's the site pictures that make me weary of buying a doll.
Originally I fell for Yume when I was younger, but I was working off a debt and staring at something pretty and expensive was counter productive to me so I stopped looking at BJD's for a couple years, when I got interested in them again I went right back to her but found I wasn't as taken with her as i'd remembered. I looked around but I still had somewhat mixed feelings, depending on the face-up and wig I either really liked her or I felt repelled by her.
As much as I love my girl now I was a nervous wreck when I ordered her! the DZ default images really don't bring out her features in my opinion, but I saw the owner pics and was AMAZED at how cute she was! I wound up gambling because I had a feeling if I gave it a shot it'd work out somehow.

However, i'm much more weary of dolls that look flawless in company photos, from certain angles very weak features can look very strong (I.E. My pickiest problem is noses, if a doll is photographed from the side or angled, it doesn't accurately show the width of the bridge or the nose shape) There have been so many dolls that i thought were beautiful in company photos, and once i saw them from different angles i realized they were pretty, but definitely not for me.

    13. Yes...most Dollfie Dream pictures have completely turned me off the dolls. I just can't look at them without thinking of stupid anime hos now. It sucks.

Also, I really thought that the Dollzone Hal looked like a retard in the pics, but I saw him in real life a couple weeks ago and fell in love. Even though I want to put him on a girl body. LOLOL His face is just so soft, pretty, and sweet.

    14. I always check owner pictures before I consider buying a doll. On the site, I really liked the Bobobie Apollo. But looking at owner pictures, I have mixed feelings. Sometimes he looks superb, and others... not so much. xwx;;

    15. I've seen some pictures that made me recoil in horror from a doll on Iplehouse, but I usually brace myself and go back and just look at the faces rather than the outfits. Or I'll love a doll and then realize the body under it is just not quite right for the head. (Toddler beauty pageant nightmares, anyone?)

I have learned that if a company won't put up blank head pictures, even if they don't sell them blank or separate, I like to see a bare faced doll sculpt before buying, I can put the pics in Photoshop and turn them black and white to get another look at the doll without the distractions of eye or hair colors. That helps a lot in determining whether a doll is what I think I'm seeing or not. It's a good deal breaker if you can't get the blank head photos. And they often cheat so much when it comes to keeping hair over one side of a doll's face, so flipping the photo sometimes helps too.

    16. No. At least, not yet.
Not finding any owner pics usually makes me not buy a doll. I always want to see what a certain doll looks like with different wigs and face-ups.

    17. Soom's Vesuvia Poison Kiss marketing images remain one of my biggest doll photos turnoffs. They really mis-marketed her and failed to bring out the beauty of her sculpt. She looked so young and, well, trampy. It was a bad combination, IMO.

It was only after I started seeing owner photos of her that I realized how mature, elegant and beautiful she was, and how I'd really missed out by being so quick to pass on her.

I also agree about Volks not doing justice to their dolls in general. All of their promo pics are very plain and blah. But all of the ones I have seen in person (and most of the owner pics ;) ) are gorgeous.

    18. It really is amazing how owner pics can vary from company pics. So I try to see owner pics (or hopefully, a doll in person) before making up my mind.

    19. Pictures definitely make a huge difference when looking for a doll. When I first looked at resin/bobobie dolls I didn't like them because the company pictures are so bad, but after seeing owner pictures I kinda want one.

    20. quite the opposite for me. I was in love with the Crobidoll Nia, till i saw my friends Nia in person. His body was not what i was expecting at all.
