Have pictures ever turned you off from a doll

Jul 17, 2009

    1. Actually, I almost always use owner pictures as a reference before I even look at company photos. If I like what I see, I'll find out what kind of doll it is and from what company and go explore.

If not, I'll probably just forget about that doll unless I see at least one pic that catches my eye.

I guess you can say I'm heavily influenced by other people's choices...But, I think it's more that owner pics are better at displaying a dolls full artistic potential, or lack of it...I just like to see what other "artists" have done with the mold so I can get a better judgement of what I could do with it.

So, in short. Yes, I have been turned off of by a doll many times before based on owner pics.

    2. i've seen many, many pics that have turned me away from some dolls.

    3. usually owner pics work in favor of the doll. and i notice it more after seeing owner pics.

but there was one doll zone doll i fell for, and then when owner pics came along i decided the doll wasnt for me. he was still beautiful but the default didnt look as beautiful as doll-zones pictures made him look.

    4. Usually for me it's he other way around, I look at the promo pics and go "EWWWW", but once I see owner pics I fall in love. Several dolls have moved onto my wishlist because of owner pics.

Check out Baakay's Kenshins in the photostories galleries. A pair of very handsome not girly Reds.

    5. When I first learned about BJD's I kind of liked Dollzone's MSD boys. I spent hours on forums, different companies' sites, google.. and soon I learned that those dolls were everywhere! Now they all look the same to me and I find them quite boring - unless they have a very nice faceup and unique style.

Sometimes I like how a doll looks in the company photos but I always have to see some owner photos too because a doll can look completely different with another faceup and wig. But then again, that goes both ways. For example, most owner pics of Luts' dolls look much better to me than the company photos. I'm not really a fan of Luts' faceups.

So yes, that has happened to me.

    6. I used to really like Dolkot's Dolls, but when I researched owner pics here, I was.... disappointed.

Don't know why, but I think Dolkot really looks better in their shop picture..... So I drop them as my favorite company -_-

No offense for dolkot's owner though.........

    7. The reverse has happened to me with the puki PongPong. From the company photos I was just like "Yikes! No versatility there." And while the mold may not have as much versatility as some of their other molds I always find myself smiling when I see someone's photo.

    8. This has happened to me many times too, so I usually wait to see owner photos before I decide to buy.

    9. Yup. BBB Pixie did that to me. Her stock photo looked so cute, then I saw some owner photos and was like, "Dear GODS, the eyes! They're huge!".
Curiously, Bobobie dolls are usually the other way round; company photos are dreadful, then you see owner pics and they look lovely!
Now I always look for owner pics before making doll-related decisions! :D

    10. If I see one in person that I like, then pics probably aren't going to turn me off. It's possible for a sculpt to look vastly different depending on how they're photographed. Usually seeing a doll in person carries the most weight--for instance, I had been considering one of the Lati Reds for a character, but when I saw one in person the head/body proportion was so different from my other dolls in that storyline, that I felt he wouldn't fit in and dropped that sculpt from the list. On the flip side, seeing some Volks girls in person made me decide to buy an SD13 Megu head.

When it comes to pics I try to look at as many as possible from both the company and owners to get a sense of the sculpts versatility--after all, just because a sculpt looks a certain way in some pics, doesn't mean that it has to look that way all the time. Chiwoos seem to have a reputation for being rather femmy looking, but mine is not because of the way I did his faceup and clothes--the same goes for a lot of sculpts out there.

    11. Not to me really, except with the Bobobie thing where their photos are terrible but user photos are cute, but that seems to happen to a lot of people :'D
But my friend was pretty set on a Souldoll Chiru for her OC, but when I logged onto the forums from her house to find owner pics of him, she just kinda went "...ewww" and totally did not want him at all. Now she wants a Kanguk because he looks nice in both kinds of pics. At least she checked the pictures beforehand before she bought him ^^

    12. Yes, yes, and yes again.

There have been so many dolls that I wanted and then I saw owner pictures and I didn't want the doll anymore. I've seen so many blurry, fuzzy, grainy pictures with bad face-ups that I don't even want a doll from that company. That's what happened with me and Luts, I can't even stand looking at and EL or Shiwoo anymore. And I own a Shiwoo.

    13. I was absolutely set on getting a DoD Mir for my first doll. She is just the most adorable thing in DoD's photos! Then I saw owner photos of her. Maybe it was the lackluster faceups or badly-placed eyes, but the magic surrounding Mir faded once I saw what she looked like outside of DoD's lovely photos. I have that problem a lot with DoDs, unfortunately :(.

Of course, the very opposite happened to make me buy my first doll. MSD Magie looked so boring in Volks' photos, but I saw an auction for one with a very cute faceup and it was love at first sight! She's still with me 3 1/2 years later XD. In fact, both of my favorite dolls (the aforementioned Magie and also Amakusa) did not strike me in company photographs but really captivated me in certain owner photos.

    14. Definitely yes. I can see how much some companies invest into marketing and promo-photos, so I try to find owner pics just to get a better feel of the doll. Owners tend to make all sorts of pictures just for the fun of it ^_^;;

I also have a reversed situation with Dollmore Lisa Rubik (Model Doll, but no matter )). When I first saw her, I did not feel anything. Her facial features seemed somehow smudged and a bit on the ordinary side. Recently, I stumbled upon a different photo of her, with a very soft, creamy faceup and a different wig (and hair-style), in French clothes - and I could not believe this is the same doll, because she looked so gorgeous - aristocratic and feminine. Good that I do not fancy dolls over 50 cm. Otherwise it'd be an instant "DO want".

    15. Usually owner photos make me more impressed by a doll I like, but there's been one notable case where I thought the doll would be perfect from the company pics, but upon seeing owner pics she left something to be desired.

Also, I say since you've seen a Red in person, that's probably the best indicator on whether you'll like him. I've often loved the company pics and owner pics and then seen the doll in person and been disappointed. That happens to me far more often then me being turned off by pictures.

    16. Usually company photos turn me off from a doll thats why I look here on the forums for the owner pictures because I can say one of the Mecha Angels I couldn't stand how she looked and then I saw a recent owner picture and now want one >_>

    17. Not really. I prefer looking at people who own the dolls pictures. It shows me what I can do and how it would look in real life.

    18. It seems I am still having a problem seeing past the faceup - to see the dolls potential. I have often seen a doll in users pics that look great... then go looking for the doll on the site and can't even believe it's the same doll.

So, now when I think I like a doll, I start looking for pics - as many as I can find. I find that it goes both ways for me some dolls look better on site, and some look better in user photographs.

I guess with time I will get better at this, but right now, I am surprised how a face sculpt can have such diversity.

      derk

    19. Yes. I fell in love with LeekeWorld's Mihael. Then I noticed, his face-up had to be done a certain way, to prevent me from utterly hating his face. For instance, the pictures toward the end of his photoshoot on his page page @ Leekworld-- I utterly cannot stand. I think they make him look "fish-faced" for lack of a better term. After purchasing him.. I looked at those pics for a while and had some serious remorse for a little bit.. Then I simply stared at the pictures further up on the page as wlel as the owner pics here on DoA and felt more confident in my decision. I stili won't know 100% until he is here though. I am currently still waiting for him to be shipped out. :3

So, while I was not swayed away from the mold, per se-- I was forced to rethink my plans for a little while. The face-up really is key.

    20. AiL Chloe for me, I love how the mould looks... from certain angles

but then I see some owner pictures and her top lip looks much too puffy for my tastes and it outs me off, I'd quite like to see one IRL to see if its that bad though since some phones it really isn't bad
