Have pictures ever turned you off from a doll

Jul 17, 2009

    1. Well, I'll tell you, I've never considered getting her, but I've seen both Dollmore and owner pics of the female version of Pado. And even though there seem to be enough Pado owners to start a fan club (lol), I've seen Dollmore's pics, and she looks pretty cute. But I see the pics of her here, and she's so different - so unappealing to me. She's just too angry/grumpy-looking.

    2. I won't name the specific sculpts, but yes I have definitely seen some photos of sculpts where I felt the in person version was not as nice as the promo photos. ;__;

    3. I've felt both ways. To use Iplehouse as an example, I was never really impressed by the promo pics of the JIDs and the YIDs. The first Iple I became aware of was the first edition of Jessica, which I found so stunning in the pictures that I just had to buy her. And she was even more stunning when I unpacked her and saw her the first time. And when they released the promo pics of Ashanti, Asa and later Benny. I found them too really, really stunning. But right there and then I couldn't afford them. But now I've seen owner pictures, and I.... well, they certainly are pretty. But I feel they look too different from the promo pics. So I'm happy that I waited. And the other way around, it was owner pictures of the JIDs that finally made me fell in love with them.

    4. I can relate to this. In the beginning this was a really big issue for me. But as time went by, I began to "borrow" all the pictures I could find of the sculpt on flickr and deviantart (and now here) and I categorized them into an album. I collected every picture, it didn't matter if the doll looks good or less good. I realized that I should try to look "behind", and studied the pictures to see how the doll was photographed, from what angles, too close or from to far, how the light was, if the face up was default, and if not how it was done (which done badly or to harsh can actually hide the sculpt behind to much visual noise). And sometimes I asked the owner how the resin was to photograph. Some types of resin is almost impossible to take a representative picture of. If a picture is taken from an odd angle and especially to close, that can certainly make facial features look odd and out of proportion. I've learned to "believe" the most in good owner pictures. Even if there are more not so flattering pictures than good ones. Because I figure if one or two owners actually take good pictures of a difficult sculpt, the chance is quite strong that the doll indeed is gorgeous. The last example is when i traded with a member here because she sent me two pictures of her Iplehouse Amy. I hadn't thought much about her before, but when I saw her pictures, she was sooo beautiful! It took only those to pictures!

      Anneke, where have you looked for pictures of Christoper? I would love to help you look for pictures. Just PM me if you want to :-)

    5. Have pictures ever turned you off from a doll?
      Yes. But I've also had the opposite happen. I have a AE Jiao Jr head on the way, and for the longest time I felt her eyes were upleasantly buggy. However, after seeing dozens of photos of her modeling clothes on Ebay, I noticed with the right makeup her eyes could be very charming.:)

    6. It's unfortunately very hard for me to find owner pictures of many of the dolls I want... The only ones I actually did find for a couple of them, for instance AS Lucifer: still made the doll look wonderful!
      And when I found pictures of Ringdoll Pan, he was blank with no face up and I just... I just got so frustrated. Because it didn't help me at all! I don't really trust owner pictures that much because of that... Because I'm afraid I'll find pictures of dolls that lack a face up. Which doesn't help me envision having the doll WITH a face up like I plan to do at all!

      But company photos are usually good enough for me when I spot a doll I like, then after a closer look I totally get turned off! Like I'll see a picture of a doll on ebay modeling a wig, then I'll look them up on the original website and... their sculpt is COMPLETELY different from how I imagined it!
      Or I get a straight on angle of their face and I see their eyes are too far apart for my taste or the nose is too strange looking. It's happened SO many times! Which is why I looked carefully to find the ones I liked the most!

    7. Plenty in fact~ some I was so in love with the official photos, but owner pics didnt really wow me~ and then there were some where owner pics really made me wished I could own the doll~ XD

    8. Since I had to sell my first bjd because I didn't bond with her when she was home, although in the promo pics she made me fell totally in love, definitely yes!

      What makes me decice wether to order a sculpt or not is comparing promo pics with owners', sometimes the result is positive others negative, but I prefer to have a more realistic point of view than the companies photoshooting made by professionals paid to make the item selleable.

      (Is that right? Selleable is actually a word? As foreigner sepakers do we have any languaje license? :lol:)

    9. VOLKS
      i wonder why they could shoot those ugly pictures for advertising

    10. no, no pictures of my doll ever turned me off and I saw many, from company and owners of the same doll who did different face ups and what not....in truth no doll should turn you off cause of the endless possibilities with customization XD

    11. it depends, some companies are notorious for bad photos when in reality or through owner photos you discover the sculpt is beautiful. Thats why I comb DOA for owner pictures, or I would have never bought some of my dolls. XD

    12. i've seen some dolls that are seriously gorgeous on the site, but then once off they're nothing like it at all. but i've also had a few dolls where the profile picture on the site just was awful and it wasn't until i poked around on DOA that i was turned around. which is prolly the reason my wish list is so long..... XD;;

    13. Bad angles, bad faceups, weird hair...everything could turn me off when it comes to dolls. Which only helps me save money, but doesn't help me enjoy the hobby more.

    14. I've seen some very girly dolls that are supposed to be boys. It always seems like they take the girl face and put it on a boy body and put a short wig on them and it's supposed to be a boy and that bothers me. I also tend to not be interested in them if they photograph them badly, like in provocative poses or weird naked poses. It just doesn't appeal to me. Which is unfortunate because they could be a really pretty doll but I won't take the time to look at them if I see bad poses or girly guys. :(

    15. This has happened to me for sure! I actually cannot stand the version, faceup, example whatever, of Luts' Abadon on their site, thought 'eww, defintily not what I am looking for' when I first saw him on their site and then was completely astounded by what other people have done with that mold... Needless to say, he is my favorite of all my dolls... I adore the capabilities of how he can look and adore my boy... I wouldn't trade him for the world! Granted... I do not have to the default faceup, but I can admit how wrong I was for judging him by the company photos!

    16. Just happened to me. I was looking at the Raurencio Studio Stella, I thought from the thumbnail pic that her face looked nice, more unique with slightly heavier features than I usually see on female dolls. And the photos looked good too... Until I noticed that one of her eyes appears to be slightly more open than the other, they're not symmetrical. And that bugs me, I know I would have to do something about it, which would be a little difficult since I like the default faceup. Argh.

    17. I only look at store photos while thinking about buying and I only pay attention to the sculpt itself. I just like to create my own idea of what I want it to be before seeing any other people's photos of it. That has always been my way of doing, but once not. I could not help being turned off from a BJD because of his default faceup. For some reason I was not able to separate faceup from sculpt in his case until the store released a limited edition of him with another faceup, one which made me love it for a character.

    18. Most definitely; many, many times. When I just started out in the hobby many years ago, I made the mistake of looking only at stock photos before deciding on a doll. Because of this, I ended up with a few dolls that I simply couldn't bond with, even over the years.

      These days, I look through as many owner photos as I can find before deciding on a sculpt. I find that if I like a doll, I will like her no matter how she is presented. For example, I looked through pictures of MNF Miyu for a month before ordering her last weekend. I couldn't find a picture of her on which she was anything less than gorgeous, even with face-ups and wigs that are not to my taste. I am very confident that I will love her once she arrives.

      I will probably never purchase a doll without seeing owner pictures, unless it is a limited pre-order doll, in which case I will look through owner pictures of the company's previous releases.

    19. yeah. when i was looking for a doll i went to souldoll,...and the oly doll i didnt like was fafner. but after seing owner pics of her i ordered her=)

    20. Up the nose shots/heads looking up, and in combination with crappy set eyes [cross eyed or set straight in without a point of focus]. Especially when these are seen in stock photos [chinese companies tend to be the biggest offenders]. If you're trying to sell a doll, at least take appealing photos of it please. I got lucky that my friend invited me to this website, or else I'd have trouble looking for owner photos to make up for the bad stock photos.
