Have your dolls been mistaken for real people?

Jan 17, 2009

    1. Only in pictures.
I had a picture of one of my dolls on a social network album, a very long time ago.
People would take her as a person all the time...
Many would confuse her with me or my sister *_*

They would ask me when did I change my hair and such. It was weird, but fun at the same time.

    2. These are some pretty funny stories! I've had my doll mistaken for a human once. My family was asking about my doll, Amber, since they had seen her at the last family gathering. I took out my cell phone and was showing them my latest pictures of her since I didn't bring her with this time. My grandma asks to see pictures too, so I show her and she asks, "Who is that girl now? Someone you work with or go to school with?" I tried to keep a straight face while correcting her. She can see just fine, but she's incredibly hard of hearing and must've missed the "doll" part :sweat

    3. I was carrying one of my dolls around at one point, can't quite recall where I was. All I remember is someone was walking by, saw my doll, did a double take, and said "WHOA! I thought you were carrying a baby!"

    4. I don't go out with them (to afraid to broke them or sratch them :/ ) but on pictures, some of my friends already got mistaken because of the pose, the expression, etc... At first sight, they looked real, but after, my friends realize it was a doll. When coming home, they don't like to see them, it makes them uneasy. My boyfriend doesn't care, he finds them nice and realistic and that's all.

    5. No but somebody thought mine was a dog. He had a fur wig and he was in a doggie carrier/purse and she saw the top of his head.

    6. Sometime in photos... My mom was curious about BJD after I bought my first doll. And when I sent her a photo link (BJD photo from a Korean artist), she thought that it was an actor or some models :D But after I showed her my doll many times, now she doesn't make any mistake anymore.

    7. Yeah...I've posted pics of my dolls on Deviantart where people would comment that they thought my dolls were real people.

I also use them as the lock screen on my smartphone. So when friends get a glimpse of my screen they'll either say:
      "Is that your boyfriend?"
      "Is that your favourite singer?"
      "Who's that actor?"

    8. When I was using a closeup photo of one of my PukiPukis as my FB profile pic, one of my relatives (I'm in NY, most of them are in the very deep south. The closest any of them live is Maryland) called up demanding to know when had I "finally gotten myself married and given your momma that little grandbaby she deserves and when was I going to bring that little angel to meet the homefolks?" Needless to say, it got really awkward really fast....

The funniest part was that you could totally see the joints in the picture.

    9. Yeah, it happens a lot with my Mikhail -migidoll mir- the first time it happened I felt really flattered, once a person told me that he looked just like a human and the picture I took seemed like a painting :aheartbea

    10. i used a photo of my IPLEHOUSE EID Doria as a phone wallpaper, two of my friends thought she were a real person and asked me who is she

    11. I've never had my dolls mistaken for real people, in photos or other-wise, but my computer art teacher mistook the Iplehouse stock photos of their Chase sculpt for a real person :whee:

    12. I once had a Hot Toy of Captain America mistaken for a real person, but never my doll.

    13. In photos? ALL the time.

    14. My friends and I were walking to the car to go to a doll meet and my neighbor was outside. One of my friends was holding her 70cm Doll Chateau Dennis, who was wearing a pink kigurumi she had made for him. After we had returned, my mother told us the conversation she and my neighbor had after we left.

Neighbor: So I saw the girls getting into the car.
Mom: Yea, they're going to a party (it's what my mother calls doll meets)
Neighbor: One of them looked like they had a baby...?

All of us had a good laugh about it since the kigu did look like something you'd put on a baby and, at 70cm, her doll was about the size of one, an easy mistake from far away and with no context.

    15. In photos I have. I will flip through pictures on my phone with the kids I watch and say what the picture was of so we were flipping through saying "doll, doll, cat, doll" And he goes "no, that ones a girl!" It was my iplehouse Bonnie.

    16. I can't say I've ever had that happen! I do tend to collect odd looking dolls though, so I'd be concerned if someone thought they were actually people!

    17. Yep, a couple of times. Though once wasn't my dolls. A long time ago, back when he was still a limited edition and wasn't the renewal sculpt, I showed my mum the pics of Iplehouse Kamau that I was planning on buying and she went 'WOW! I thought that was a real person!'

Another time, I showed pics of my fav doll to my family and my niece (mind you she is only 2 and a half) went 'Cat. Cat. Dog. GIRL!' and I was like 'No, no that's a doll.' She honestly thought it was a real person, but then again even adults have mistaken that same doll for human so I can understand a toddler doing the same.

And the last time, was at christmas not the latest one but the one before and my step-brother didn't really get my hobby so I decided to show him some of my dolls and again the one I showed him was a pic of my fav girl with her old faceup and then he went 'WAIT! That's a doll?! I thought she was real, I was gonna ask you for her number!'

haha I laughed so hard. So yeah in photos my dolls have been mistaken for humans, mostly my girl in my avatar, but then I think she's always looked so human and lifelike to me and other people with her old faceup and especially with her new one. She's just always had so much life and character, and seemed so real to me so it doesn't really surprise me. It's funny when it happens though. XD

    18. I was looking on Flickr at some photos of bjds and I came to this 1 photo where I thought I was the owner because he looked so real even the back ground was legit until I saw the only thing that made me see the he was a doll the house in the background was really really big compares to the doll XD

    19. I posted one my my dolls pic on fb and some of them commented like oh i thought it was cosplayer.. i dont know why and what made me feel like it offended me. He was laughing and said that they thought he was a she too.. made me kinda sad too but im ok now haha

    20. Nope, but I def have mistaken photo's of bjds for real humans myself. Only split seconds but still..
