1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Horses for larger dolls

Sep 12, 2006

    1. Darn Kitty, maybe one will pop up soon again! I hope you get your Prancer! Keep faith! :)

Wow, great comparison Rosslyn. I agree, Battats are definitely pony sized...especially after seeing the Prancer in person finally. Now I have a herd of ponies (and only 1 MSD lol) and a giant thoroughbred, haha. Love your tack! The lack of stirrups especially interests me; I believe it was the Romans that invented them? Medieval Europe rode stirrup-less until the Romans introduced them...hmm, dates and years escape me right now. :3 What people is Kevya supposed to be from? He definitely looks the type that would ride a smaller, stocky horse. Great mods!

asdfghjkl I forgot to get pics for this thread again...my Prancer's mods are officially finished. (Like, two weeks ago. >_>) I think I'm holding out for when his tack is done too...making a fantasy set to match one of my elves' new outfits. <3 Should be rockin'! Still trying to think of a NAME for this guy...eesh

    2. I have one of these big guys -- there used to be a shop on eBay that sold them but seems to have disappeared into the abyss. He looks quite impressive with the SD sized dolls, and even works with my 75 cm boys. Having trouble getting pix to upload -- will try again later.

    3. Stirrups were probably invented in India and did not come to Western Europe until after the Roman collapse, possibly as late as the 800s AD. The Mongols and Huns had them, and that may be why they were so successful against the Romans. Romans did not ride horseback very much -- they used carts or chariots or plain walking to get around, because without stirrups you had to be strong, healthy and skilled to ride a horse. Also, horses were very expensive to maintain because of ancient farming techniques, they weren't very good at pulling plows, and they weren't as good to eat after they got too old to work, compared to oxen, so your average peasant family didn't have one. Some historians think stirrups were one of the formative factors in the medieval system -- stirrups made horses so valuable that the guy who had the most land, and therefore the most horses, became the king. Jousting and "medieval shock warfare," which is what plate-armored knights were good for, would not have been possible without the stirrup.

Of course, the book I read about this was from ten or fifteen years ago, so there might be more research available now.

    4. I have four sizes of the DPl Leeds horses, the one Rosslyn has is the smaller size, I find those good for MSD and up to about the 50cm size, but the next size up work better with SD sized dolls, I have about ten of them now including four just like Rosslyn's so let me do a comparison for you.....

Please excuse most of the horses having open necks, I am in the process of customizing them.....

As a rule it seems if the horse is about the same size as the doll it will be a good scale, the largest horse is like a huge war horse for the 70cm dollshe boy, and would also work really well for a mecha angel, but unless you can find one in your country the postage price on something that huge would be ridiculous!
The two larger horses have very strong internal skeletons and can support a small child, my biggest one gus was ridden by a five year old daughter of some friends of ours without any problems (though I did eventually extract him I was nervous she's get too rough with him)
I see these horses come up for sale quite a lot over here, as there used to be a toy horse training club for little girls that sold them, I also see quite a variety of different colours come up so there are some really nice ones out there. I collect ones in good condition when I see them up for sale, but I will probably only keep one of each size, I think that's enough :)

Oh man, I just spent like an hour and a half adding text to all the pictures and it's not showing up XD

    5. EEEE! those are fabulous I think I need to take a trip..lol..really wish those were sold here in the US. wow 10, that is pretty cool. I have 7 of the battat horses. I'm thinking of taking one of them and do some flocking..never done that kinda thing before, but we'll see.

    6. just a quick warning about the my generation horses, their paint wears easily, knocked mine over posing one of my sisters dolls, it received a scratched ear, also, their mane and tale become easily tangled, so tie them into a braid or something to keep them neat and clean. gotta fix mine up, thinking Kiro is gonna be a knight!

    7. oh my...how much does that big big one cost?

    8. I actually got that 34" one second hand, so he only cost me $30 plus postage, the courier wouldn't deliver him to my address, so I had to go and pick him up from the depot....I complained about it until I saw him! I thought I was buying one of the 22" ones and he's almost twice the size!
He was in perfect condition though, which was another nice surprise. I think the seller said she paid a few hundred dollars for him new, but he's way to big to post, he weighs almost 5 kilos, so I will be keeping him.
I think the only way to get your hands on one that size would be to find someone selling one in your own country, he's about 42" long from nose to tail, so even finding a box big enough to have one shipped would be a mission. I have sent some of the 22" /56cm SD sized ones internationally though, it cost me between $50 -$65 to ship from NZ, so if you could find one even in the UK, I can't see it would cost more than that to post, which is about the same as the international postage on a doll, so not really that scary in the scheme of things.

More pictures of them here: with the sizes and text I edited them with, and hopefully also without their heads cropped off.

    9. Oh my they have a pink unicorn.

    10. I think its time for me to make a trip to the UK, I wonder if one will fit in my suitcase..lol. I'm guessing from the info on the site they don't ship outside EU..drat.

    11. Bwahaha that's one big suitcase :)

    12. What I want to know guys... is where are you getting the tack? The horse is one thing, I have a mytwinn horse that I repainted and he's great, but I really need the tack.

    13. I make my own. Making bridles is a lot like making jewelry. Try searching for miniature saddles on Ebay...I found a really cool spanish style there a few months ago.

here's one of my english bridles...you need lots of rings and some scale buckles.
I made that saddle too...found a cool how to make book on Ebay.

and here's a western one....again found that saddle on Ebay(though I tear em apart and put back together)
Both sets fit My Twinn too...Nahar is basically the same size.

    15. This a nahar...he's resin so weighs in at 15 lbs. He was sculpted specifically for BJD inteh Sd size range.
He's made by Sheri in Or

    16. PamSD: can you tell us where you got the book on making your own saddle? I've got to make one for a smaller horse.

    17. oh cool! I may just have to get me a few patterns, I have lots of horses to get for.
