1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Horses for larger dolls

Sep 12, 2006

    1. could you not make your sculpture look as though it was pawing at the ground? or in movement in a way that one or two of the hooves are still touching the ground, and thus giving stability, but perhaps just with the tip of the hoof and not the full sole of the hoof, if you get what I mean.

    2. Wow!!! So much inspiration here lately! I can't believe I didn't find this thread sooner (again). After DoA updated and I lost all my subscriptions, I totally forgot to search for it again.

I am SO looking forward to seeing how this new horse developes, Shulamite....drafty types are my favorite horses! (Hoping to someday own a Clydesdale...stuck with my crazy Thoroughbreds for now ;))

themasterjinn: I think your pictures have finally decided me on my next doll-horse project...as soon as my tax check comes in, I'm getting that MT horse and making an Epona for my Link :D

Hoping to get out on one of these unusually warm days here soon to get some proper outdoors photos of my Prancer...poor thing still doesn't even have a name, but I finished customizing him finally. Ooooo, him? I guess he's officially a gelding then LOL

    3. Thank you raewhitewolf for your ideas for the next horse. He will be in the position very similar to my sketch with three hooves touching the ground, two of which are planted and the moving hind foot touching the ground for stability. It will be as stable and as balanced as possible. As Pam pointed out the front planted foot will need to come forward a bit to preserve balance. I would love to see somebody do a Frankenstein makover on an original model, maybe with a front hoof pawing the ground. Oh, for unlimited time and money! If I do one after this model a rearing horse would be cool I think as you could get different photo looks from different angles.
Moontouched, I appreciate your comment on the drafty-types. Yes I hope your dream of owning a Clydesdale comes true but I would be thrilled to own a Thoroughbred or even a Shetland pony. But then I probably wouldn't play with dolls :)

    4. Sorry of this has already been answered but is there a significant difference between the battat horse for 20" doll and the one for 18" doll (those being the easier to find on Ebay) ?

PamSD, how did you paint a "furry" horse ?

    5. I posted this a while back but since the thread is long...

To recap this thread for new people: ( Hi guys!)

Secret Loft Designs Nahar is an Arabian type horse sculpt cast in resin that is intended for SDs.

The My Twinn Prancer, no longer produced, is a decent scale to be a horse for 60 cm dolls.

      The My Twinn Quarter Horse
has a few flaws and a very static pose but it is big enough for SDs.

      Leeds plush toy
company in the UK makes a few horses who are ALMOST tall enough to be horses for SDs. Just smallish horses.

Battat/ American Girl/Our Generation horses meant for 18" dolls are large enough to be pack ponies or miniature horses but not full size horses.

Domuya Nightmare is a slim jointed fantasy horse the right size for 60cm dolls but rare as hen's teeth, since Domuya went under.

To locate any of these, please use the search function or browser of your choice.

    6. I currently have five different sizes of DPL Leeds horses.
      They are;

31cm / 12" tall - Great size for a large pony/small horse for 16" fashion dolls or chicline, or large horse for 12" dolls
43cm / 17" tall - Perfect size for MSD dolls
56cm / 22" tall - these vary in size a couple of centimetres depending on the construction but are a perfect size for 60cm dolls
68cm / 27" tall - Great as a large horse for 60cm SD dolls or a perfect size for 70cm tall dolls
84cm / 33" tall - Size is of a large horse for 70cm dolls, like a large warhorse, would also suit an 80cm doll like a Mecha Angel very well (but I don't have one :( )

They are all beautifully made, and the larger ones are particularly lovely. I will try and get some good comparison pictures of the different sizes for you guys in the next couple of days.

    7. Strange, I was sure i posted to thank you Rosslyn.
So there is only one size for the Battat horse. Well, at least, i won't be lost anymore on Ebay with the different title.

Thank you too raewhitewolf for the equivalence in cm and inch.

    8. Apparently I actually have six sizes of DPL Leeds Horses, I have taken a bunch of comparison pictures which will hopefully make the sizes of these horses very clear to you.

Please ignore the open necks with stuffing showing, I am in the process of rooting in mohair manes for some of them.

    10. Oh splendid !
Thank you very much raewhitewolf !
Right now, i am beginning my stable for BJD with a Battat for an AoD MSD size. As it should arrive mid may, i'll have to be patient. ><
So far, i have horses (Barbie and Big Jim from 1978 to 1983) only for my momoko and they are perfect scale (bot off topic both on this subject and on DoA).

    11. Thank you, raewhitewolf, for the great comparison shots! I wonder how hard it is to find those horses in the UK - you'd think it wouldn't be hard at all if the Leeds part of the name meant they were made here! The only places I've seen them sold were at huge horse shows like Olympia and on those massive tombolas at county shows... I need two for Dollshe boys, preferably a palomino and a black. At least I know to keep my eye out now!

I did come across the Heunec free-standing horses on Amazon, but they're rather more than I want to spend, and I bet they weigh a tonne as well (as they're meant to take up to 100kg in weight O__o ).

    12. For those interested, Our Generation brand has a Battat made horse out now that has slightly poseable jointed legs. The back legs are designed only to bend the wrong way (It's supposed to be a heel not a Knee- Have they never seen a real horse??) so I don't use their main joint, but the rest of the joints do bend a teeny bit so you can vary the pose a little.

I've got one I am reworking to be my SD hunter's pack pony, and the MSDs may borrow her from time to time. For a proper older breed pony look, I'm going to give her a really shaggy thick mane and tail. She's not very well sculpted, but she looks decent enough with a repaint. I'm making mine a buckskin grullo. I love dorsal stripes.

    13. I do see the plush horses come up on ebay from time to time, and I remember the main seller was in the UK, so you may well be able to get one for a good price over there as postage should be pretty reasonable.
I actually posted a custom one of these plush horses, a 57cm tall SD sized one to the U.S. about a year ago and ot cost about $65USD to post there from New Zealand, so if you can find them, they may not be too expensive to get hold of.

    14. I love "vides-grenier" (kind of market where people can sale their junk and not so junk things).
I found this horse at the last one for 5€ (around $8 i think)

      Here with JID

Unfortunately, it needs some caring (that i try to do) and repairs (that i fail to do, not knowing the how). ><

    15. Rae: Aww I love the giant plush pony :D For a draft-sized horse, he works wonderfully. The proportion looks about like me and my Percheron gelding. ^_^ I would love to see one of those modified with feathers and a thick shaggy mane, or something. He is super cute!

Rosslyn: I can't wait to see your modified Battat! They do have very pony-like faces, short and stocky.

Blah: What a great find! That horse could be an awesome prop...epic fantasy battle scenes are coming to mind ;)

I really need to take some proper outdoor photos of the My Twinn horse...I've had him over a year now but only have icky indoor phone pictures. Dx

      BUT. THE PRETTY. He's so majestic ;w;

    16. Thank you Moontouched.
I had a look on ebay, cheapest was around $50. ^^ But in better state i hope !

Your My Twinn is splendid too ! I do sooooooo wish to get one one day !

    17. Yes you are right Moontouched, I so need to get off my butt and finish customizing those horses XD\
I have actually started adding mohair lockt to that huge one, but I think he needs more.

Blah, I had thought that one of those leather horses could work well, I used to see them a lot when I lived in Israel, but apart from the odd interior design store I don't see them over here.
I have a few camels for my dolls which are made the same way though and they are lovely!

    18. When i checked ov the Web, i found one on sale supposedly made in 1920... I have some doubt that they would all or near be that old. ^^
Also, some 10 years ago, there were some found on african style deco on town markets (they were smaller though if i remember correctly).
Mine has its leather cracked, seems it was poorly taken care of. ><

    19. I know nothing about horses are the My Twinn horses too big for an MSD like a Minifee or a Jid boy?
