Horses for larger dolls

Sep 12, 2006

    1. It depends on the look you're after...

If you want them to look like adults riding a horse, the MyTwinns are too big. The Battat/My Generation horses are a better scale for that.
If you're going for something more like a small kid riding a full-sized horse, though, they'd be fine.

I used to have a picture of one of my 60cm CP/Delfs on a MyTwinn horse standing next to his MiniFee daughter on a Battat, but I seem to have deleted it in my last round of web-space cleaning. :(

ETA: Here's a quick-and-ugly pic just for size-comparison. Regular MSDs actually do seem to fit the MyTwinn horses a little better than "slim minis" like MiniFees do, but Hakata here (He's a Volks KoTenshi Tsubaki... so, basically a standard MSD) still looks like a kid riding a horse rather than an adult, proportionally.

This is the more recent of the two MyTwinn horse types, but he's the same height as the older prancer model.

    2. oh man I just wrote out this whole thing on sizing in the hopes of helping people find BJD sized horses, and then accidentally refreshed the page. Blergh. Basically I've spent most of my life working with sporthorses so I have an eye for equine conformation, and what I wrote boiled down to 1) for your basic 58-63cm doll, horses should be about 20"-23" at the withers, and smaller would be pony-sized depending on how tall your doll is (a 5'3" woman will obviously fit a smaller horse, or look smaller on a big horse, than a 6'6" man, with real-sized riding horses generally being between 15-17 hands (60"-68" or 5'-5'8" at the top of the withers) and anything under 14.2 (4'10") a pony, depending on the breed. Most horses over 17 hands are drafts, which are usually used for hauling wagons rather than riding) and 2) doll shoulders should be below the withers for a good fit — that's the easy way to tell (there was a 17.1 hand warmblood I worked with for a while and I could barely see over his back, and I'm 5'7", so it depends on the breed as well)

But yeah, it's fun going through this thread and seeing all the different types people have used! Nahar is great of course, but I'm not a big fan of Arabs — I'm hoping the artist will make more SD horses in the future. The sketch of the Percheron looks great — maybe someday we'll get a Dutch Warmblood? Or I'd love a Thoroughbred!

    3. @ chessapphire1214 ... sweeeeeeeet ^^ numbers I can relate too rather than brands I've never heard of lol thanks a lot!

    4. Yeah I'm lying in wait on the next Shulamite horse sculpt because it might be a little bigger, and my dolls will look silly on an Arabian meant for 60cm. They are all 65cm range. You wouldn't think that makes a difference, but 65-70 dolls on Nahar look like they're on a pony to me. My big dolls need big breed horses. Warmblood/nearly draft size, please please. If I had the time and a good book on horse anatomy someday I might just make my own- build a metal frame and then do expanded foam and then apoxie or something over that.

    5. Just found this (old, it's from 2011) post on an other forum. I am soooooooooooooooooooooooo unconvinced. ><
If SetsunaKou is here, i apologise but making longer legs to 1/4 scale horses doesn't make them suitable for 1/3 BJD. They just look like riding foal at best. ><

    6. Oh dear. Some of them worked okay, but some of them were a little off, it's not a terrible idea though. Probably quite a lot of work went into that.

    7. Not exactly a Yay nor a Hourra but i find it useful to share : Truformarmatures sells equine armature for
. So far, they only 1/6 and 1/4 scale but they're speaking of 1/3 scale to come. :D It's not exactly cheap ($124.99 for 1/4 scale with flexible ribcage) but could be useful for very beginner ?

Oh, I cannot remember if the Happy People Horses were spoken of as mounts for SD size and taller ? So far, I'm still checking them to compare them to the DPL Leeds Horse. ^^
*One day, I'll have a grey mare for my SD sized doll, one day !*

New edit : I had to taken off the flock on one of my small horse (1/6) and its tail seems in bad shape even after a softening bath. So question, how can i change it entirely ?

    8. Blah: Awww your duo are so cute together! ^o^ The Battats work great for the MSDs. And yep I painted the MT horse, and blushed in the black points.

And wow... I believe quite a bit of work DID go into those horses...wow...some of them do look okay, but the ones with bent legs are a bit alien looking lol. I'd say I've never seen a real horse like this, but this one time at my friend's show there WAS a super tall willowy looking thing that was skinny to boot, looked like the slightest breeze would knock him over. >.> Eh, I've always been more inclined to beefy drafties ^___^

    9. Oh those happy people horses look quite cute, but a bit stockier and shorter in the neck than the DPL Leeds ones.

    10. Moontouched, you did a great job then !
Tried to grey a black flocked horse and i had to take the flock off totally 'cause i probably put on too much water with the acrylic. >< Not sure i'll try again (evenmore on a bigger horse).

raewhitewolf, the + side of the happy horse is that WE can sit on them as they can take up to 100 Kg as they are for children (and no tax for people in Europe). ^^

Yes, we can see all the work in those long legged horse. Some are betterly (is that even a word ?) done than other but with rider, proportion are totally off. It's look like adult riding long legged shetland ponies (does sound mean i know but not my intention). ><

    11. raewhitewolf, that comparison with all the pictures was fantastic!!!! I've been looking into and SD size horse for a few months now, and have yet to find something I like. I am not going to take the dolls to the store to try the horses :D hehe But now I can take a measuring tape and know what horse will fit who here :D Thanks!
I love your Dollshe boy's pants :D lol

    12. Yes some of the DPL Leeds horses are for children to sit on as well, my two larger ones are also rated up to 100kg of weight, but all of them have a strong internal armature, which means they all hold up the weight of heavy resin dolls very well. I should have mentioned that before, I thought I did....sorry.

Thank you Giodrakes, it is much less daunting when you know the size you will need, and thank you, I made his pants :)

    13. Are there any updates as to any super large type horses being made? I've just been watching this thread and wondered how this project for Secret Loft Designs is going.

    14. Hi mxiong, the large horse is coming along slowly. In this picture you can see she has a long way to go but you can see the size-scale with 70 cm Angel Fantasy Dylan (poor man, no clothes for him yet, waiting for some to arrive). Her size will work with even larger dolls in my opinion. It's hard to tell in the pic but her face will be turned towards the right and I am planning on sculpted feathering on her fetlocks. I call her Alabanza, and yes she will be a mare. If anyone wants a customized sex-change on their model it will be easier to mod this way. Plus I like the idea of a War Mare. I hesitated to show a pic as there is so much more work to be done on her, but this much shown was actually was the most difficult and time-consuming part getting the size and proportions reasonably worked out. From my experience on the last horse it goes much quicker from here on out, and I look forward to working on it this winter. [IMG]

    15. Oh wow, that is so cool. Really coming along well! I'm glad to see progress photos. Understanding the process helps to realize the amount of work and planning involved. It raises appreciation level. I'm so happy to see work in progress :-)

    16. Oh my gosh that is so awesome! I wish I had fewer projects to work on- I'd love to try something like this myself.

    17. She does not look bad at all (although it is difficult to tell much right now). Though I guess it may cost a real fortune to send her to Europe...almost impossible

    18. Wow, it's HUGE!!!
You have so much work on your hands, my hat off to your patience and determination :)

    19. Three Cheers for the new sculpt and her sculptress ! ! !
