How Big is Too Big?

Apr 8, 2008

    1. Bigger than me is too big.

And then only significantly bigger than me. If it's a girl.

    2. Well, so far I have an msd and a 70cm with two 62cm boys on the way. The msd is fun to play with and all but I hate sewing stuff for him, while the 70cm seems just about right for me, plus something about the bigger size kinda facinates me. I don't know if I would have a limit. I also have two manniquins that are 7ft tall and ever since getting into the bjds I've been eyeing them up to how I could mod them into bjds...freaky

    3. For me no bigger than 70cm. I just think that their proportions get stretched out to much when they are taller. Also I tend to like short characters, they are so cute!

    4. I think my limit is over 70cm. I say 'think' since who knows in the future.XD But right now, over 70cm seems just way big for me.

    5. Over 1:1 scale. :XD:

What can I say? I'm a guy. "Bigger is better" mentality is a truism.

    6. Personally I love the convenience of the MSD size, but there's just something about SD dolls that have a real "presence", if that makes sense. ^^;; Due to weight I would probably never go above 60-63cm though.

    7. I have MSD sized girls and SD sized girls. I don't think I could handle them being much bigger. They are heavy enough and dressing them is razy enough with the spinny arms and legs. I can't imagine the added weight and cumbersome size. I think I'll stick with the 60CM... Until they come out with a 70 CM doll that I HAVE to have. As far as I'm concerned, I haven't found a sculpt in that size that floats my boat yet.

    8. While I think that some SD dolls are very beautiful and I might like owning it, I've been around them and find myself unwilling to mess with them too much. I'm not a small girl, I'm about 215lbs and I'm 5'6 1/2'' tall, but those dolls are too much for me. A lot of it is simply the weight that you'd have to carry. I don't mind meeting them and their care-humans, but to own one for me is pretty much out of the question unless I just fell head-over-bum for a face that ONLY comes in SD.

I'm getting two MSD size dolls (one is just now a recent transaction with a friend) and I like that size. Easy enough to carry multiples of without resorting to huge bags and carriers, and still big enough to not make me worry about breaking it or loosing it easily.

    9. My first and only doll at the moment is a 60cm, but I wouldn't mind owning something of a smaller size. I find the height differences really cute (oh man, I used that word), and maybe even small as a 32cm wouldn't bother me. I guess it's just their appearance.

What I don't find myself owning anytime soon or if at all would be the dolls that are 70cm or such. The weight doesn't bother me (when I transport my doll, I carry him on my arm), but the height would be freaky since I stand only five feet and two inches tall. I guess it would be more amusing than anything, but 70cm (at the moment) is definitely too big for me.

    10. My first doll that I'm saving for will be a 70 cm I think, he's in the 1/3 scale category on Dollzone. I have held one of those size dolls at a convention recently, and he was much heavier than I thought he would be, but I still want to get him. I'm not sure how easily or hard it will be to carry him considering I'm a small girl. XD But anything bigger than him and I might scream and run away. That would be just too big, it may as well hold MY hand.

    11. I don't think there is such a thing as "too big". I own 2 MSDs, a Crobidoll boy who looks huge next to them (66cm) and a little 26cm girl is on her way. I get my dream dolls based on how much I like the sculpt, even if it looks strange when you put differently-sized dolls next to one another.

    12. Each person will have her own answer to this question.

I, myself, have dolls from 14cm to 70cm. I haven't (yet) fallen in love with an 80 or 90cm sculpt, but it could happen yet.

Size isn't what I base my collecting on, the sculpt is.

I have schlepped both the 70cm boys to a meet, but not at the same time; if I did, they'd be the only dolls of mine attending.;)

    13. My dolls to date are MSD, but all the sculpts I truly love are SD and up to 70 cm. I just can't afford one right now. I'd stay in the MSD scale, but I can't find the more mature sculpts I like the best. As for anything bigger than SD or (70cm)-I love the Mecha Angel faces, but I really don't like their attenuated bodies. And the other 1/2 dolls (is it Dollzone?) have better bodies, but I really don't like any of the heads. So 70cm is currently my limit. I'm looking at Souldoll Chiron (human version), Unidoll Berkut, and Soom Spinel for a character I'm thinking of. I'd also like an Akando. Very curious about Iple's upcoming EID girl as well.

    14. I have a 67cm boy on layaway and I think that will be my limit for a male doll. I have an SD16 Volks girl and that's my limit for a female.

    15. Not over 70, I think. 60 is optimum.

    16. The bigger the better, well almost, I can't imagine how heavy a 1:1 doll would be but I love the larger dolls.

    17. I looked at all sizes of ABJDs before I got one, and since I've always liked big dolls the 60 cm size is perfect. I want a Hound but I have trouble carrying around my SD13 girl... so I don't know how I would fare with a 70 cm doll but I really want to see one sometime in person, to know if it's for me or not.

    18. Just in case someone wants to know, there is a company called Paper Moon, and they do life sized bjd's. They are vinyl not resin. For weight reasons. But the one I remember most is the life sized Chi, 5ft, 1in.

    19. I have dolls in every scale and I love them all, but I've found that in general, the dolls above 64 cm have difficulty bearing their own weight. Even my 65cm SuperGem boy has problems holding his own weight up standing. And the Dollshe boy is a serious challenge posing in anything other than a lounge-y slouch. This could be a question of engineering in both cases, but the laws of physics apply, no matter how pretty the boy or girl is.

Usually, to create greater heights than 60-63cm, while still maintaining a reasonable weight, the proportions of the dolls are skewed - stretched out. This is most noticeable in the Dollshe body and, while I don't own one, the Mecha Angel body. It's not a particularly realistic sculpt and clothed these dolls can be aesthetically pleasing. Naked, however .... not so good.

Exceptions to this rule seem to be the very sturdy Unidoll Real boys, like Jace, who at 67cm is a burly, very realistically proportioned fellow, and the new EID (Akando) body, which is a quite girthy, muscular 70cm. The Unidoll Real boys do seem to be able to hold themselves up. I can't speak to the EID, but reports seem to be good.

While I love the intricacies and the sculpt of the new Dollshe body, weird as it is, I don't expect to buy one. It's just too tall for me. All things considered, I prefer to stay within the range of 60-64 for my larger scaled dolls. To my eye, they're the most attractive and the mechanics/physics/posing dependability of dolls in that range seem to be the best.

    20. I have a Luts SDF Abadon...and though I love his size the majority of the time, his long legs and arms can often get in the way....he's pretty well proportioned, and I don't usually have too many problems besides the typical Luts disease lol.
I haven't gotten my Migi-MNM hybrid yet (modded Jina head and male DIM MNM body), but I love the proportions of the body beyond anything- it's a bit thicker in the legs than a lot of the dolls I've seen, but it looks so much more realistic, and I have a feeling it'll be easier to handle than the body of my Luts.
