How Big is Too Big?

Apr 8, 2008

    1. 90 cm I'm so done and even 80. I'm getting a 70 so he's the biggest I'll ever go. For me the tinier the better x3

    2. I can't see myself ever owning anything over 60cm, maybe 65. For me anything over that is too big, I think it's because I'm short though. And I like smaller dolls, they are so cute!

    3. I think really the only time I would say 'No, no bigger!' would be if the doll was the same size or taller than myself. That, and if he or she was to big for me to properly handle. For me, I see no fun in having a doll that is so big that they are practically taking up as much space as yourself. I'm sure the doll would probably be easier to pose, and a heck of a lot more detailed (Even thinking about the detail makes me sigh XD), but what if I wanted to take him with me in the forest? He r she would be so very heavy!! >__<;

    4. I think I cap out at 70. The big guys are intriguing, but the balance seems to be off, and they're awkward for someone my size to handle.

    5. Hm I think everyone has thought about this at some point...:3nodding
      I only own a msd sized doll, I love the size and it was the perfect size for my first doll! ( when arrived he was bigger than I expected! :XD:)
      I am thinking of getting a sd doll in the future...but I probably wont get a doll bigger then 60cm >.<

    6. I'm very fond of my MSD-almost-Tiny OrientDoll Tae.

      He's lightweight, portable, fairly inexpensive and pretty nicely proportioned for a doll his size. Because of his size and price, I was able to be creative and customize him without any worries of ruining him. He was also a great way for me to experiment, mess up and learn about BJD's before investing in anything bigger.

      Having said that, the idea of a much larger doll (80cm, 90cm.. or even bigger) is really very tempting. I think of dolls as models for my characters, so I'm a sucker for details, realism and posability. A bigger sculpt would mean I could bring my character's that much closer to life. Plus the idea of a bigger doll means I could hug it without being awkward, my poor Tae is just a little too small to hug comfortably.

      The main things holding me back from a larger doll are choosing a character, sculpt, size and coming to terms with the price. I would also be much more hesitant to mod the sculpt, meaning I might sacrifice creativity. I don't know if the weight would start to annoy me after a while and I've noticed my Tae takes up more room then anticipated since I like to create a world for them to live in that's doll-sized (with things like a bed, furniture, props, etc) which means that the doll would take up three times as much room as the doll itself and my Tae already takes up quite a bit of room (the top of my dresser and part of my bookshelf).

      But I'm not fundamentally opposed to larger dolls, in fact in theory I say, "The bigger the better".
      It's just my ever practical nature that tends to deter me from actually purchasing.

    7. I find 70cms are too tall...:( and really skinny for that hight. But recently I've been Eyeing Iple's new 70 and though huge his overall proportions "fit" unlike a lot of the other larger dolls. :| But until I see him standing next to a delf will I be able to make up my mind.:)

    8. The tallest I could personally handle is in the 60cm range. The 70 and 80 ones are gawgous, but I just couldn't do it, ignoring the fact that they'd look funny with my MSD and tiny ^^;

    9. I'm another MSD lover. I like the cute kid/teen range face molds, and my DoC boy is so easy to carry around with me. At first I thought I'd only ever have 40-45cm range minis, but I really like the Rosette girls and some of the bigger Iplehouse dolls. One of these days, if I have the money and they seem more desirable than any of the minis I'm considering at the time, I might even end up with a 70cm doll. But I don't think I'm ready for that yet. XD
      I don't think I could own anything bigger, like those 80cm ones... they're beautiful, but soso intimidating to me! I will probably only own one that big if Iplehouse ever realeases one. Because I just can't resist Iplehouse. XD

    10. I always though a SD would be too big for me. So I limited myself to MSD and smaller. I got my DoT, and what do you know. I've already put a down payment on my second big boy!
      I keep promising myself no more dolls, but who knows. Maybe I'll fall in love with 70cm next? Then what will I do?

      I'm going to say anything much bigger than 3 feet is just going to be creepy and excesive, but that's just me. The small 4 foot 11 inches girl >,<

    11. I would not want a doll as big as 80 cm... I enjoy the fine detail of a smaller doll or figure and the clothes and accessories just seem cuter the smaller they are.

      Having said that, I think if I did get a large doll, I would start to feel as though it was... 'real.'

    12. 70cm is about the perfect size for me. I would not want an 80cm simply because I already can't find anything for my 70, and my current doll is already hard to balance with the high center of gravity. Ten more centimeters would only make it worse!

    13. 70cm or1/2 is too big for me.... i still think 1/3 is a bit too big even i have two of them.
      size does matter. i like something tiny and have lots of details. when things become bigger, craftsmanship is easier, i think.

    14. I love my Sard, but the first time I picked him up I knew he was as big as I want to go, especially with the weight and those long, long legs. 60 cm is still my favorite size--my Delf fits into the crook of my arm perfectly, seems more proportional to my eye and isn't too heavy to carry around a con/store/festival. I guess I got into dolls at the very beginning of the supersizing trend and imprinted on SD-size as my Platonic ideal or something. I love to look at the big guys--many of them are gorgeous--but I doubt I'll get another one over 65 cm.

    15. I thought that a MSD was the maximum size I would go to but after finding my 60 cm SD girl I realized that I love their size (I love the more adult shapes). I have seen and handled a 70 in person and I couldnt believe the weight and size. Ok he intimidated me, but the detail on his body, and his face was just fantastic. I dont think however I could own one. Just no place in my room to put such a big beauty. The 80's.. I cant even picture trying to move through the subways with one. But the detail on the faceups must be just astonishing!

    16. I just Got Arlais on friday and i was so sad when nothing but one dress would fit her! she was way bigger then i thought but i'm starting to bond with her i think, now that she is away from the smaller dolls. but it's hard to carry her around, 70cm is my max, any bigger and i'd sell her.*goes and plays with new doll*:aheartbea

    17. I actually don't care for dolls bigger than MSD size. I'm all about the petite/tiny sculpts. I feel a bit overwhelmed by the larger sizes, like they would be awkward to pose and to carry.

    18. I saw my first 70cm boy yesterday, and I dare say that he isn't too big for me.

      I think I will end up getting one.

    19. The biggest is my Soom 65cm. I have tinies and SD, but I don't have a MSD. Would like one though..............

      Hey.........anyone out there tote their 60cm to 80cm friends around? I have a large beach bag that my Soom fits in.............throw her over my shoulder and I'm good to go!

      Besides faeries love to fly everywhere!

    20. I don't really take my dolls many places -- I don't really go much of anywhere -- but if I am dragging one of the MAs next door to the folks' house, I'll just carry them in hand. They're large enough that it could be problematic over longer distances, but for short walks, they certainly aren't a problem. Akando? Er... he might be a pain to lug around, to be honest. He's shorter, but 'bigger', and definitely heavier.
