How Big is Too Big?

Apr 8, 2008

    1. The first time I compared my MSD-sized doll next to a 70cm doll, I did not like the size difference at all and was very turned off by them at the time.

However this past weekend, I went to a few doll meet-ups at Otakon and one girl let me take pictures of her (bigger dolls) with mine sitting in their lap. After seeing this, I like the big dolls again. ^^

Anything much bigger than 70cm seems to big. 80cm is pushing it, but I really don't like those 1/2 scale dolls.

    2. I can handle big dolls as long as they are mature looking, meaning they are not real life size. The new Dollmore girls creep me out. The thing is, I want realistic looking dolls, but they need to be "out of scale" inb order to keep some balance. I got two Mecha Angels, but as they are so long and lean, they don't seem so big. I want an EID Akando. :sweat

    3. I want a 70cm DZ Yuu, but have been worried about getting him because of how much bigger he will be over my 2 DZ MSD sized boys. The more I see them though (though pix I've seen here :D ), the more I want one *L*

    4. I'd love a really big doll, but 80cm dolls are already half my height. I love contrasts in height and things seeming to be out of proportion.

    5. I was surprised the first time I held one of the larger dolls at how heavy they are! I wouldn't want to carry those around too much due to the weight so I prefer the smaller types (anyway I tend to prefer the ones that look like cute kids which are generally smaller.)

    6. As an owner of a Mecha Angel and a collector of larger male dolls, I find that the Sabik is about as big as I want to go. He's a little tough to handle sometimes and when he fell on me he was quite heavy, but I still find that I like him and have thought about getting a girlfriend of the same size for him.

If you aren't expecting how big they are, it can be quite overwhelming, but I don't really notice the difference since he usually sits apart from my other dolls. Too big for the book case they're on. xD

    7. I'm actually very particular about sizes. Unless I REALLY love a mold, I will never get anything beyond the size of an MSD, and even then, I get a bit creeped out.

    8. I don't have any dolls, YET, and i've only been aware of Dolls for only about two years. BUT for me, the bigger the better. Don't get me wrong the smaller ones are amazing as well, but I love the 80cm best.

My current "obsession" are the Lusion Dahliah's from Dollmore.net. ((for all who do not know)) They are 80cm and are basically toddlers. For me I love them for the pure fact that they give me a sense of nurturing. Im a very motherly type, and seeing these specific dolls just made something deep down click for me.
Also i just love the big dolls best ^_^
sorry if that was too much rambling.

    9. To me, a Luts Delf at 60cm is small. I was kind of surprised when I finally got him because he was so much smaller than my first doll. Which was a Dollshe. Which I found small compared to the porcelain doll I owned at that time. That said, the weight factor means I'd probably not go larger than an SSDF, though I'd like to meet a Mecha Angel someday, fufuf~~

I do not think bigger is necessary better, though, because they're so hard to lug around. In fact, I'm considering going in the other direction and getting a tiny next, fufuf~~

I do want a mannequin, though... a life-sized one for my room... but mother-dear thinks it's insane...

    10. I think that life size is TOO big, I have seen a 1/2 size doll up close and personal and my dear... He was absolutely beautiful. His owner put him on her shoulders while she went places and let me tell you it was amusing to see..

Honestly, ever since I saw him I have wanted him but the price is just O-O;; crazy. When I can save up i'll get a 1/2 size, they are just gorgeous and the very doll that got me into DEFINITLY buying a BJD in the first place. :] woot for 1/2 size.

    11. Back on 04-08-2008 I said this...

Enter bouncing 7lb baby boy Akando.

I am eating my words...Ark went bye bye and Akando needs a brother.

    12. Hmmm. I don't really know how tall would be to tall. Right now I only have an SD sized doll... And she is more on the shorter side, when it comes to SD. However, I do want a 70cm doll. I dunno if that would be to big for me. Lol. We'll see. But I do love big dolls. Always been more so attracted to SD sized dolls then smaller sizes. So, I think the bigger dolls will be fine for me. Maybe not so much when it comes to carrying them around at Cons.. 'Cause Citlali already kills my arms walking around with her at Cons. But I like 'em. And can't wait ti get bigger ones. 8D

    13. I dont mind 70cm size dolls, I actually prefer to buy dolls that range around that size, since after finding out that most molds that size are to my liking.
I dont mind getting Soom's 80cm Mecha Angel dolls either, but, maybe not Dollmore's Lusion girls, they are very beautiful but, not really something I would bring home... (they are kinda creepy ><'')

I dont mind lugging heavy dolls around, could be because of my career as a childcare teacher :) theres just something satisfying about carrying something heavy on your arm around the house, lol, their heaviness just make their presence more prominent.

    14. 70 cm is way to big for me. I had the possibility of buying a Delf El Elf which had the Feeple boy body and I felt very uncomfortable about the idea of owning such a big doll. Luckily the seller (a friend) decided that I could buy only the head.

So it seems that a 60cm SD is the biggest doll I feel comfortable with.

    15. I think it's " too big" when you feel bothered by the doll's size... otherwise big is ok i__i/

      [off]
The same with "small" dolls... but I do like them...for me smaller= cuter T-T~

    16. I have an IH Luo on my wishlist. He's not that much taller than my Soom big boy, but definitely much more bulkier. For the first time I've had a preconcieved doll character begging me for a body, and Antonio wants to be incarnated in an IH Luo sculpt. Having never handled an EID in RL, I'm not sure how much more bulkier he would be, but Antonio is getting persistent. :doh

I do draw the line at 70cm and above, though. I love the looks of the Soom Mecha Angels, but that's definitely too much doll for me.

    17. The biggest I have is around 60cm now. I think I could handle a 70cm (and there are a couple that size I really want eventually), but I'm short enough that anything bigger might be pushing it. If I was considering something bigger I'd see if there was one locally I could see at a meetup or something. I love my minis and 60cm's the best - the tinies are great to dress and play with but I only carry them around if another bigger doll is carrying THEM. Having a doll in my purse isn't as fun as having one on my arm at a meet or Con, and even though he's heavy I love the 60cm for carrying around (and since I often put a mini on his lap when carrying him, I think I could handle the weight of a bit bigger doll too).

    18. I LOVE bigger molds, but am intimidated by the size. I thought MSDs were huge when I first got into the hobby. I'm really attracted to a lot of larger molds, but the size is a deterrent for me. I'm sticking with my minis for now.

    19. My personal limit is when anything gets to the point where they can be mistaken for an actual person XD XD like, above my belt would be too big for me XD

    20. I think a doll is only too large if you can't pick it up; if you have to drag him/her... um, yeah >.<
Also, having a 7 ft doll would be... inconvenient, especially considering door frames are a few inches over 6 ft.
