How Big is Too Big?

Apr 8, 2008

    1. I used to live in a HUGE two bedroom 1.5 bath apartment. I had five 60cms and two 70cms and one 42cm girl.

I moved to california, my apartment is barely 400 sq feet. I have two 60cms, one 70cm, 1 tiny, seven 42 cm slims, and eight machinas of various design.

o_o; So somehow the smaller space made me want smaller dolls... but i have a LOT more dolls now.

    2. I wouldn't want anything bigger than 60cm.

    3. The idea of the larger dolls is cool, I don't have any yet but maybe someday. Even if they did a 1/1 scale doll it'd be cool to see!

    4. I think the larger the better. But then at the same time I don't want them to be TOO big. I mean, my mum has a doll (not bjd) which is about the size of a 3 year old toddler. I would LOVE a bjd that size! But no bigger than that. Then it just get's a bit much.

Could you imagine trying to cart that around to meets? Hell to try and do your own photo shoots :S. Yeah would be a bit of a PITA.

    5. For me, it's nothing bigger than SD sized. Anything bigger than that and I'd be overwhelmed.

    6. i had a dollshe hound and though i loved him dearly he just was too big, not really in a way that i minded having him, but just in a way that i almost never did anything with him.
now my tallest doll is around 35cm (an offtopic doll) and around there, maybe some cm's more, that's the border for me.

i'm glad i had a tall doll though because i was always curious of how it would feel, and so i got to experience it and know it now!

    7. My first - and only - BJD is a Dollmore Model Doll Lisa Rubik. I LOVE her, and her size is great. She's not too heavy in my opinion.

But... she can't stand by herself. :( And she can't sit up straight with out support....

I was wondering, but is this normal?

    8. Hm. I think around 60cm is actually the smallest I like. I have a 30cm and he is far to little for me, I don't plan to keep him much longer :(. I also have a Soom Sabik and he is really rather lanky, I somewhat wish he was better proportioned rather than being all leg...

I like 70cm the best though. My hooved SG boy must be about that tall, and my E.I.D is, I feel most comfortable carting them around. Enough weight and substance to be noticable in the arm, but not to heavy or unweildy imo. I'm not really tall at all [158cm roughly] since some people have mentioned their own height to be a factor.

I guess it is not so much how tall for me, but how tall a doll can be made and still have good poseability and balance, along side being sculpted nicely and having a good variety of clothes ect. available.

    9. bring BIG dolls to meets?
Just use a Travel Trunk to it XPPP

I've seen some girls carring SDs in trunks.... I found it very helpfull XP
bigger dolls just would mean bigger trunks i_i/

I'd LOVE to have an 1/2 doll.... too bad I don't like any of the AOD heads.... maybe I'd buy Primo in the future and mod [a lot] his head TT'' ...I just don't because it means too much money + too much effort.... and I have more "urgent" dolls in my wishlist .__. mainly small dolls, as you can see in my signature (or in the wishlist in my profile)

    10. I've always felt there is something indescribable about an object with weight. As there is no denying thier presense. However, as much as I love the larger dolls, I cant see myself jumping to anything past 65cm.( Although I have a paticular fondness for Sabik>w<)

I'm quite alright with my 60cm and 63cm boys as it is. I've held various larger dolls 70-80cm and although the experience was incredible it still felt a bit awkward. Something about their incredibly lanky limbs. Even a chunkier fellow might be wierd. Sadly, they'd probably become a room decoration for me. :\ Although I love SO MANY of their sculpts!! *loves the older looking faces*

      ^^

    11. i just love size of 60cm to 70cm
      hugging them is comfortable

    12. I LOVE big dolls! they are so...comforting? I'm not sure how to put it, but I think they are easier to carry around and do things with. Someday I'm getting a mecha angel. I know it. XD
they have more to grab onto and they are sturdier. I find myself being lots more careful with my little Miwa than Nori, who I carry around the house, She is just so small and thin I'm afraid of hurting her o_o

    13. I am really picky about how well a doll poses and how easy it is to handle, and in my experience the bigger the doll is the more magnified any joint/posing issues are, especially with heavier resin. For example, Volks SDC and SD16 boys have VERY similar structure but the SDC = a dream to handle, and SD16 = a nightmare to handle. Well, for me at least. ^^; And then there's all those gangly limbs to keep track of with really big dolls, lol.

So, I generally prefer no larger than small SD size due to posing and handling issues. I'd get a doll up to 70cm though if it was designed well enough . . . and they do exist; the DoI body is wonderful! But I'm much more leery buying of 65cm+ dolls in general as most of the ones I've handled are just more of a pain to deal with than smaller ones.

    14. I really want a Soom Heliot with the hooves etc but, my biigest doll at the moment is only around 56cm so that would be a big jump. The shipping and customs on a heliot would be bigger than the damn doll though so he is still a dream!

    15. The bigger the better! The first doll I ordered was a 70cm DZ Yuu and his size is wonderful~ He's still my tallest doll, though my Heliot (with hooves on) is almost as tall. I have no problem with their size and would love to have a Mecha Angel someday~ (maybe Saiph or Sabik) As for my limit...I don't know if I have one. I've seen a Mecha Angel in person and they really aren't all that huge (to me at least. xD). For me it's about proportions I think. I'm really attracted to AoD's 90cm boys, but none of their face sculpts call to me so far...I think 90cm is my limit, and any doll taller than that I'd want to be 1/1 and yes, if I could aford one and loved the way it looked I'd totally get one that big. I'd probably need to call in help to get him/her dressed and moved about though! xDD

On a side note, I like all sizes. Puki's are so fun to play with and I love their size too!

    16. Bigger than MSD is too big for me.

    17. The bigger the better, in my opinion. I was immediately attracted to the 65cm+ size range. I keep my dolls packed up when I'm not toying with them, so space isn't a huge issue for me.

I do have one small doll (a Pipos Basic Cheshire), but he's a special case - his character is meant to be a tiny demon, so his size is actually in scale with my other dolls (and planned dolls).

The only other exceptions I plan on making are for in-scale age differences - I'm willing to go down to MSD-size to get my pre-teen aged characters.

    18. I would LOVE to have a mecha angel but they are just too big for our house and I haven't seen clothes or SHOES offered alot in thier size...I need a pattern to sew by so I would be totaly stymied by them..they would (oops, did I say they??? plural?) be sitting arounf nekkid!!! I LOVE my Sd's and think they are perfect to costume--the size is perfect for me to sew. Too little is too fussie.

    19. SD13 size is tops for me, and I really like the standard SD size best. ^^ Nothing close to 70cm or taller for this girl, I'm too little to cart all of that around.

    20. I've seen a 90cm that was craaaaaaaaazy. I'd stop at 70-80. I love big dolls.
