How Big is Too Big?

Apr 8, 2008

    1. For me MSD-sized is just right. That since fits in to my home and life while I feel like the bigger dolls would just take over my home. Even though there's some really gorgeous sculpts (and oooh the hunky 70cm boys :aheartbea) but they would be too big to fit in. Since I've got three cats I want dolls that I easily can keep out of cat reach. And since I've always been fond of miniatures and such MSDs feels quite big too me anyway.

I feel it's a bit sad if all creators think that bigger is better.

    2. Well, then it may be good news that Spinel is not a Mecha Angel - he is a Super Gem and stands 65cm tall. That's even smaller than your DS boys :)

I personally considered a Mecha Angel very seriously, but he was supposed to become the best friend of my 60cm Leeke Luke. Well I had to realize that proportions do matter to me. A lot. And while a 80cm doll would make my Hound look short and cute ( very appealing :chibi) my Luke would look like a child next to him...:doh

So while I would go a bit taller, like 72-73cm, that is the max for me. (I think...at least for now....^^)

    3. I really love the big dolls best, there's just so much more you can do with them. However I don't really care about what size they are, I love them for what they are :)

    4. IF some company makes a doll that is 95cm then I would say that is too big, I can only imagine the cost and weight of a doll that big and not to mention clothes, shoes and wigs would definately be a challenge for.

    5. Early on in my BJD collecting, I purchased a Dollshe Saint. I must say that I was quite overwhelmed with him. His limbs were so gangly and I always had trouble posing him.... I eventually found him a new home with Sweetest185. I don't think I could handle anything bigger/heavier than a Luts Delf. I'm happy with my people now.

    6. I think the 80cm height maybe the point @ which they just get TOO big to handle. I suspect it's like carrying around a kid. And *sigh* I just may get the chance to find out because I'm being seduced by Soom's Vega - Last Song. I'm still resisting but I'm getting weaker.

    7. Yeah I just looked him up. I don't know why I had it in my head that he was one of the 80 cm boys.

He's really beautiful, knowing he is smaller, I might well have to have him.

    8. I like tiny dolls, but many of my dolls are around 60cm.

70cm it's a bit too big (and heavy ) for me,
but I might get one bigger then 60cm, if I really love the body.

    9. My Dream doll is an Elf Sabik, and he's 80cm... I love the weight and solidness of a bigger doll... That said I'm waiting for a Puki to be shipped, so if i get my Soom Sabik then I'll have a 11cm doll and a 80cm doll and I'd love them both the same =3

    10. I think 70cm is already too big for me. I do like how they look, but I don't think I could ever get one.

    11. Even my first doll isn't here yet, I'm gonna post this! o/

The first BJD's I met were all MSD-sized, so I used to handle them at the very beginning of my BJD hobby. Because of that, it's a bit hard for me to get used to the bigger dolls. A friend of mine just bought SD-sized, and when I saw him the first time, I was actually very surprised of his height, and after i lifted him up, I was surprised of his weight too. Since I'm not tall and muscular, long-handed and long-fingered, I found a bit hard to handle the SD-sized doll, but I'm totally in love with him anyways.

My 70cm tall dollie is on his way to home, and I promised to myself that I will have hard time with his weight and height, but I guess its worth it since the mold is adorable. >w<

Let's saythat my limit is 70cm. If the doll is bigger and hevier than that, I think it must be too hard for me to handle, since the 60 cm doll caused problems, too. XD Plus I don't want to make doll clothes that would also fit to a human. :----D

    12. I think MSD-sized is my limit. Although there a lot of SD-sized dolls I like (mostly just ones my friends own or other BJD owners on here), I don't think I could get a SD myself. They're just too big. x___x; Thus I stick to MSD-sized dolls and smaller.

    13. oh man nothing is too big for me! xD Or too small for that matter :) I love them all!! form the biggies like my 70cm boy to wee-little Pukies! > 3<

I wish I could have like a life size doll! that would be TOOO COOL! (Kinda like a persacom from Chibits! <333)

    14. For me,I think an SD is the right size. The 70cm and 80cm are a bit tall for me.Since I'm pretty short, the 70cm are as big as my legs and I'm sure the 80cm reach my hip xD no thanks! I do admire them, they're very pretty :3

    15. i think 60cm would have to be my limit for practicality reasons (just one gets heavy enough, and i cannot imagine carrying anything bigger) and for character reasons. to me the 70+ cm dolls are older adults and i don't want any old folks hanging around shaking canes and making the smaller dolls look like wee children.

    16. Glad I'm not the only one who thought the same thing.

    17. I can't deal with the 70cm+ guys, either... That's one of the lessons I've learned having my Hound. He's just too darn big for me to handle easily, so he just sits on his shelf and I mess with him once in a blue moon.

I had the same problem with a friends' SD16. Joe's beautiful... but just too tall and too heavy. 'Made me sad, since I love the sculpt, but if I had one, I know he'd end up just like poor Seimei. :(

Anyway, after a lot of playing around with different sculpts, I've settled on the long-legged SD13s as about the "maximum upper limit" of doll sizes for me. I don't want anyone taller or heavier than my Amakusa, and really prefer the slightly shorter, slightly lighter proportions of my CP Delfs.

    18. When I ordered my MSD I was worried that she may be a bit big!!! I'm used to miniatures!! When she arrived I loved her!!! I certainly wouldn't want to go any bigger than MSD!!

    19. I know someone on the board got a life sized Chii (from the anime/manga Chobits) doll a while back, and when I say life sized, I really mean life sized! She was at least four feet tall...taller, if memory serves me correctly.
I struggle and get frustrated sometimes just trying to dress and handle my SD girl...and when I had a Hound for a brief period, I was constantly wrestling with him. I couldn't imagine trying to dress a life sized BJD. It'd be like trying to dress a limp or catatonic child. Dressing a child is hard enough when they're cooperating...when they're not, or when they can't, it's not the easiest job!

So the 60 cm range is just fine with me!!

    20. I have a 60cm and that is too big and heavy, but I love the face sculpt. If the head would look good on a smaller body, I would prefer it.
