How Big is Too Big?

Apr 8, 2008

    1. I like the idea of a huge doll, but probably would not buy one. Probably.

    2. It's a practicality issue! How awkward is it to carry a doll that tall around, so I mean, you'd need some kind of well-padded suitcase... The shipping costs would be crazy, as would tax upon arrival (for sure!) an what about the weight? *-* awkward...

    3. Well, I think that, for a 90 cm doll, it might actually be easier to find clothes and if you can't find them, certainly it would be easier to sew them. Cos the bigger the clothes you sew, the easier it is to do it. Also, you can probably use young kids' clothes for a doll that big. I wouldn't want one of those, though. Too little space in my flat and also, I don't like the sculpt(s).

The smallest doll I've ever seen is my Realpuki (9 cm, wasn't it?) and my tallest is my Minimee head on a Dragondoll Uncle body (didn't measure him but I'd reckon something around 75 cm). Got a pic here of my Akando (70 cm) and my Realpuki, so you can see the size-difference:

    4. I am sort of fascinated by big dolls, always have been. But, no, 70cm is my limit. I almost regret having gotten the 70cm because he dwarfs my other dolls. I couldn't resist though.

    5. I love big dolls I really do, but they don't fit in my doll family so I don't for see myself ever owning a doll larger than my 70cm. As for taking him out, he is my favorite convention companion. Being a big DZ doll he is super tough and I actually find him easier to carry than my smaller dolls. I hate trying to manage a tiny, you always have to have it in the palm of your hand, and I have never figured out how to carry an MSD without being awkward (I just feel awkward with MSD's period though so that is probably a me thing). I have other SD's that I like to take out as well but none of them are as easy to carry as my 70cm guy. I can toss him up on my shoulders like a kid and he just sits there. I have kids though and his weight is nothing compared to even a newborn let alone an older child, plus he doesn't fight or flail. I've never had one of my dolls have a serious accident at a meet up or convention. I think the 80cm Dollmore Dahlia is gorgeous and I would love to own her but I have no place for her and I only buy dolls that fit a character. The same is true for the 90cm AOD, he would dwarf my other dolls and so not fit a story line. He looks really cool though.

    6. Can you imagine the size string that would require? Wonder how he would pose and if his string would retain its tension well. Wow. what a HUGE hunk of resin

    7. I do believe the largest dolls on the market are Dollmore's Lusion dolls. Which proportionately are in fact in scale with a small child. There are a few photos of them around the board, you can see the huge difference between them and "normal" BJDs. They actually fit in human clothes.

    8. Those AOD monsters have been around for a few years now. They're still the biggest in town, at 90cm. My 5-foot-3-inch friend has one, & when she carries this toddler-sized thing around in her arms, the effect is most unnerving. She buys his boots from Target.

The 80cm Lusion chicks could probably give Mr. AOD a run for his money at wrestling, though. She's the only other doll I know of who'd fight in his weight-class.

10cm is still the smallest I know of, unless you count certain offtopic Volks Tenshis or CCC sub-micro-mini creatures.

I have a 10cm fetal-position Volks ReiTenshi & an 80cm Soom Mecha Angel Vega-- those are my two extremes!

Soom Vega (80cm) with Unoa Light Azurite (26cm)
Iplehouse Akando (70cm) with Volks fetal ReiTenshi (10cm)

    9. To me there is a difference between "bigger" and "taller". For instance, my tallest doll is my Dollshe DSAM32 (74cm), but he's so skinny he looks puny beside my IDealians (72cm). So, the tallest doll I've seen is my Saint... and the smallest ones I've seen are brownies (I remember they're shorter than a pukipuki).

While my EIDs are not precisely my tallest, the comparison with a pukipuki is certainly amusing.

I also have a comparison between Hyperon and same pukipuki.

I'm waiting for a Spiritdoll Herculean body so that is going to be interesting. I believe that is going to be my limit, since neither Mecha nor AOD 1/2 are my cup of tea.

    10. I think larger dolls are really interesting, but 90 cm is just too much for me. 70 cm is where I feel comfortable, and even then they can get heavy to carry around and are a hassle to travel with. However I am all for more colors, shapes, and sizes for BJDs. The more options we have, the more we have to choose from ^^

    11. I first saw the sales page for the 90cm AOD dolls in fall 2009...and instantly wanted Bo! but I ended up getting a DZ Yuu (70cm) for Christmas that year and he was way too big for me to handle, so I decided 90 would be crazy for me!

Though a year later, I got to play with one at a dollmeet. It really is like picking up a toddler, except with adult proportions. The owner told me he could wear some toddler clothes, though sometimes the width has to be adjusted and he can wear kids' shoes! and he was transported in a stroller. :P

I really liked the look of the doll, but there is no way I could handle him. Anything over 63cm is too big for me.

The smallest doll I've seen was a Brownie, if we're going only with on-topic, though my DC Faramita is only 8cm.

I usually prefer my dolls to be in the 40-62cm range. They're big enough that I won't lose them and can sew for them, and small enough that I can usually carry one around without any trouble.

    12. I think a 90cm adult scale doll is a bit ridiculous and starts to lose some of the charm of a DOLL and just become a mannequin :XD: Volks did get it right with the SD size range, they are big enough to have a strong physical presence and a lot of detail, but small enough to handle, carry in your arms and display neatly. And still be 'cute!'. My 50-55cm girls are just right for me although I enjoy child-like 40 and 25cm dolls also.

On the other hand is Lusion, I think she is in a league of her own being close to the size of a real little girl. I think she is eerily beautiful and I do enjoy seeing owner pictures, even if she is not for me.

    13. So, would a life-sized BJD just be a poseable mannequin, I wonder? Anyways, as mentioned above, I wouldn't necessarily mind a larger than 70 cm doll, but finding decent clothes would be a hassle unless you know your way adequately around a sewing room. The looks you would get hauling one that size in a baby stroller would be priceless though. Just imagine if companies started selling custom-made baby strollers made for transporting BJDs.

    14. I saw a 90cm AoD at a con once. It was an interesting doll. For myself, I prefer to keep them around 60cm -- I wouldn't rule out ever getting a larger doll than that, but 60cm is a nice size for me, and this way a lot of my guys and girls can share clothes. The smallest doll I've seen was a real puki (if I'm remembering correctly) at a meetup.

    15. I think I saw a 70 or 90 cm doll at con once but I couldn't get too close due to the crowd and where the doll is placed. I personally, would not want to get a doll that huge, I guess it's just my taste in doll at the moment. Even though I love my 1/3 Miho, part of me thinks he's too big!

    16. Recently my friend was telling me how she saw a doll at a convention that was 115cm! (Which is extremely rare) The woman carried it like a small child (the doll straddled her hip). While this would be cool, I think that is extremely over the top. I know I dislike carrying around my 70cm thinking is too big; I cant imagine anything bigger unless its just going to sit in my room. But I guess it really depends on what you want. If it's just for display, bigger sizes would be fun! But for taking them places like gatherings, meets, conventions, etc. Anything over a 70cm would be hard to handle.

    17. I have the 80cm Lusion Dahlia and she's a beast but I love her. She's also about my limit. I can't imagine any bigger doll in terms of weight, cost, or space. Even if I could afford it or had room for it, my fiance can barely tolerate my Dahlia, so anyone larger would not make it in the house.

    18. I like dolls of all sizes, but for my collection SD-size is the top limit. After handling my sister's 70cm boy I know I couldn't deal with owning a doll that large. On the other end, I won't go any smaller than Yo-size. I had a Puki-sized girl once and her teenie-ness made her frustratingly difficult to work with.

    19. I wish there were more dolls the size of Dahlia...particularly from the cheaper chinese companies. I'd love to have an 80 cm immature doll that won't take me 3+ years to save for.
