How Big is Too Big?

Apr 8, 2008

    1. first of all.. how would you move a thing so huge about? In resin the weight would be... gah I don't even want to think about it. The shipping cost would be murder and the likelyhood of something breaking during transport would just freak me out. That kind of doll would just be too huge to handle. If that's what you want well good but I think you'd have less trouble getting a Lusion doll which is a scaled child size... real child proportion.

Personally this doesn't rock my boat at all. I can't speak for other people but just the trouble of trying to show off such a doll is just no go for me. I have a Bishonen House and I can't carry him around on long periods of time... heck even SDs can put a serious ache in your arms from carrying them around for a con for example.

    2. my first doll is actually 68cm , even though its really pain to take care specially to find the perfect clothing for him (he is new line)

and i already can tell he is HUGE , first i didn't think he is that huge , i know he is 68cm but still i never know he is that tall as well ~

i love him every second and i regret nothing for getting a huge doll ^^ even though now i'm thinking to get 70cm doll ~

    3. I am only 5'3 and can't imagine a doll more than 70 cm, which is somewhat too big for me. I think staying between 50-65 cm is as high as I will go on a bjd. Currently my tallest bjd is 44 cm, an MSD. I have wanted an SD for a while, but my major rule of thumb is they cannot be larger than props available- for instance, chairs, tables, beds, etc. I would think a 70+ cm doll would need child sized furniture which would be hard to get.

    4. i love large dolls :) But maybe over 70cm is too much for me? a company called Leeel has 90cm dolls and I think those are probably waaay too big.

    5. I will have to agree with idrisfynn, 80cm is my max.

    6. Eh, I wouldn't really know...maybe any dolly bigger than a Dollmore Trinity.

    7. I wouldn't buy dolls bigger than MSD size, they look really heavy. Their transport must be really cumbersome.

    8. All my dolls have to be in the same 'universe' so to speak. I don't have fantasy dolls (except for cosplay - ie one of my characters 'cosplays' as some satyr or vampire etc). My rule of thumb:
1 cm = 1 inch (more or less) so 75 cm is about the limit. Mecha Angels look like very tall people so work, but those 80 or 90 cm dolls look out of proportion - as do 52 Idealians, & Chiclines. The new KID boys from IH are great but I'm not sure about the girls cause it looks like they have developed busts which would NOT be good since KIDs would be 6-9 year olds for my group. I appreciate the Lusions etc but no reason to get them.
Now a full-size ANDROID (cause he's got to move by himself - no other reason to have a doll that size) - well I'm a big fan of Absolute Boyfriend (all incarnations - especially can I just say Jiro Wang....) - but other than that why in the WORLD would anyone (even pervy otakus) want a BJD that size? The weight!! There are more, ahem, functional & maneuverable lady dolls out there for iffy purposes. Maybe store mannequins? which aren't cheap anyway so a totally poseable one might work - I just don't know & have no interest LOL

    9. For me, I've always liked the big dolls, most of my BJDs are SDs. I'm looking forward to one day getting a Dollmore Trinity. I have vintage child size mannequins and a Trinity would fit right in (I hope).

    10. I have 1/2 scale AoD Bo, and he's quite the handful. I don't think I could possibly go any bigger than that, it'd just be too much. Once they're over half my height, they start reaching the point where I'm uncomfortable sleeping with them in the room. Beau already puts me on edge sometimes (his thousand-yard stare that I've yet to correct doesn't help), so those off-topic 1/1 scale dolls are definitely out of the question.

I don't think I ever see myself getting another 1/2 scale doll either. Granted, Beau is easier to find clothes for than most of my other dolls, but I barely have room for him as it is, and I can't really take him much of anywhere because of his size.

    11. 70cm seems big enough for me. I do like big dolls, though, because of how realistic they can look.

    12. For me, the bigger the doll, the more I fall in love with them. They end up so realistic and detailed, and there's something about big dolls that make me really happy.

    13. My sister has an EID and he's quite impressive.

I was at a doll meet last Saturday and one of the girls put her 1/3 doll into my hands (I am a newbie but I come with good recommendation XD... and I handled him very carefully and I didn't touch his face up, thank to you all for teaching that to me, btw) and he is quite big but I can't say I disliked it.

I ordered a 1/6 for me and I've maximum considered 1/4 for the moment, but I'll see as I'll become more expert in the hobby.

but I do have a question:

R1VET: How in heaven do you restring a 1/2 doll?? O.o... I would be terrified XD (I will be terrified or restringing the 1/6 one XD)

    14. Anything above 70cm or so, maybe a couple cm's more is okay, but for the most part that is when it ceases to be a fun doll, and starts to become more of a posable sculptor or something of the like. I think that is a pretty fair assessment, though we've rarely had to deal with this, because no matter how crazed or fadded the doll hobby becomes, anything bigger than that just doesn't latch on much, because of size issues, clothing issues, general workability issues, so I think 70cm is just perfect and doesn't need to be exceeded unless for a specialized purpose beyond hobby.

    15. I started off this hobby with a big iplehouse MSD girl, and she seemed really big to me at first. Then I got a 68cm Model Doll for my second, and she is too big for me. I think MSDs are just the right size, not too heavy, portable and easy enough to find props for. I might try for a 60cm SD in the future, but 68 is too big for me personally.

    16. The first doll I got was an MSD. I was really excited about her just because she was my first BJD and I had never held one in person. I wasn't too hot about her for a number of reasons though. I told myself maybe I'd grow to love her once she had a proper face up, wig, and clothes. I still didn't fall in love with her at all. However, I just got my first SD sized doll a few days ago, and even without proper eyes, any clothes, a wig, or a face-up, I can barely stand to put him away. I just love looking at him and holding him and I love how big he is. MSDs are just too small for me, personally. Maybe as a younger, more childlike character, but in general, I think I'll stick to SDs.

    17. The largest doll I've ever owned was a Soom Amber (65cm, probably more with her hooves)... she didn't work out for me, and I always felt like she was too big and too expensive. (Though looking back at her price, while yes, she was the most expensive one I owned at the time, I'm now seriously considering two dolls that are considerably pricier than she is, and didn't blink at ordering a doll almost the same price as her.)

For a long time, I felt like MSD was my limit, and I wouldn't go back above that limit. Earlier this year, though, I realized there was an old, discontinued sculpt that I was pretty fond of, in the 60cm size. So I started poking around the Marketplace, and found an inexpensive secondhand one. After a lot of deliberation (through which he stayed available), I finally brought him home, and he's just perfect (and has since brought home another 60cm friend).

I'm not sure whether it was Amber's size, her perceived cost at the time, posing problems, or something else that made her not work for me, but I don't think I'll go above 60cm again. My smaller dolls are still my favorites, and I'm still intimidated by the scale of the 70+cm dolls, they're still definitely too big!

    18. I just got to handle an Amber for the first time. First SD I've ever seen, actually -- I'm a real newbie. She is absolutely huge, and really makes me want to stay with smaller dolls. I don't know if the feeling is different with a non-fantasy SD, but she just seemed bulky and unwieldy, even if her sculpt was beautiful. I don't know if it was in reaction to that but I just purchased my second doll -- a much smaller Dollzone Wendy. :D I think I'll like her size a lot better, but we'll see!

    19. I'm a guy, and it's funny, the bigger your toy the better. Goes for everything. From guns, to dolls, to burgers. The only thing that can be too big is a salad. ....waste of space on a table.

    20. To be honest I'm kind of afraid that my incoming Iplehouse nYID is going to be too big. I have a Fairyland MNF on its way, and she's the first doll that I purchased. I already feel as though 16" is a pretty big size for a doll, so I'm not entirely sure what to expect with my Iple. I'm sure I'm going to love her just as much as the MNF, though I am a bit concerned on how much room there is for her to stay! xD So I guess it just depends. I think that "too big" would be like a 150cm doll....one that legitimately looks like a small person or child. Those just kind of creep me out xD
