How Clean are Your Dolls?

Jan 25, 2010

    1. Well, right now, very clean. Currently, Vince's body is wrapped in a tea towel because he's still mid-faceup, but he'd just had a bath before I started. I've been throwing a cloth over the heads I'm painting in between doing bits of their faceups. Of course, I try to keep him clean all the time, just 'cause I'm kind of OCD about stuff like that. Don't like dirt, tend to not like the outdoors.

Their stuff, however, is a little all over the place... Once I get the doll 'room' set up, that'll be neater.

      =^__^=

    2. I used to keep them out on a table when I had 4, but I got tired of the cats stealing the wigs and pushing them over, and finally one Moon got bitten in the nose. :| So now I keep the ones I am working with in a cheap Ikea pantry, and it keeps them light and dust free (mostly). I don't unstring them to clean them, but if they are unstrung for new elastic I will clean all the joints out then. I usually don't bother with the inside of the headcap because the eye putty is so gross anyway. I do actually iron Rain's shirts, though I seldom iron my husband's. :o

    3. They're here and there. Some are on my desk, some end up on my radio cabinet and the rest (WIPs usually) chill in my closet. Great thing about the location of my work room is that direct sunlight doesn't reach here so the only worry(?) is that someone might sit on one of them.

    4. Honestly, Faolan and Riu need some cleaning up. Riu has some small marks on her knees from black stockings, but Faolan's jeans have left a huge amount of blue marks on his legs and bum. The only reason I haven't cleaned them off yet is I just hate restringing (I'm weeeaak). Once I get up the urge to take him apart again, I'll be soaking and cleaning him off.

And somehow, with Jason being my oldest, has remained perfectly clean... :\

    5. My dolls are clean, but they are not always tidy. I only have 3 out at the moment, and they live on top of my chest of draws in my bedroom. Whenever I clean (about once a week- sometimes more often) I clean them too, but sometimes they get a bit untidy when I move them around. I don't always have the time to straighten out their wigs and clothes once I am done.

My other dolls are all in boxes at the moment, and I will probably need to clean them up when they come out of storage. :)

    6. Yes, Magic Eraser is great for stains. I use a very small Vogue Ginny doll brush and comb that gets wigs free of any dust and I also sometimes rinse them (the wigs)0 in a little bit of Dawn dishwashing detergent and warmish water. I have even used cut plastic straws as rollers and they work great. :)

    7. They're pretty clean now. 4 out of 6 have been thoroughly cleaned (unstrung/washed in dish detergent/magic erasered/restrung) within the past month. Everyone is at least surface clean at the moment as far as I can tell. Most of them don't get handled very often so there's not much opportunity for them to get dirty or disheveled. They do get a little dusty (especially their wigs and for some reason their hands :?) after a while of just sitting on their shelf, so if I notice that happening to one of them I just pick up the doll and play with him/her a bit. Usually just shaking out their wigs and brushing off or changing their clothes does the trick.

    8. okay, my girly goes everywhere with me. So she gets light stains all the time. That is why I have my trusted Magic Eraser. She has a place on my desk that she had her bed, when it's light outside (even though my room is really dark) I cover her with the blanket for her bed. But other then that I take her out with me almost twice a week.

    9. Well they are not filthy but I wouldn't say they are spotless. I do try to keep the dirt at bay with regular magic erasing but since I handle my dolls nearly every day they may have a bit of dirt here and there.

    10. I tend to keep my dolls in their boxes or carriers when they're not being played with. As for actual cleaning, I always clean them with a damp cotton towel right before putting them away. I also keep them nude or dressed in white clothing if they're not being played with to cut down on staining. As for their wigs and clothing I keep those sorted and folded in sealed containers and shake any dust off of them.

One thing I didn't see already mentioned was putting clothes in the dryer. I only ever do this if they need freshening up or are wrinkled and it's always on the gentle setting. :3

    11. One of my dolls is FILTHY. I'm mean literally caked in grime. Like... if you rub your fingers across a newspaper, that kind of grey, grimy, dirty look. But it suits him so well! I love it, and do my best to preserve it. As far as I know, dirt isn't actually damaging to resin, so I'm just happy with it :D

    12. They get the occasional magic eraser bath or spot cleaning as needed, but they sit out on the shelf nearly all the time. I'd prefer to keep them behind glass, but I don't have a shelving unit like that for them at this time. They do get a little dusty at times, but I'm ridiculous about washing my hands before I even think about touching my dolls, so I don't think they're too dirty overall.

    13. whenever I see some light stains on my dolls, I always use magic eraser to clean it..but I haven't the time to fully clean them..I'm kind of busy with work and school..so I would say they're not that clean, but also not so dirty..

    14. My boy is absolutly spotless. He is not aloud near any sort of filth.

    15. Its maybe just in my head but when I remove my dolls clothes I always have this feeling they are dirt and need to be clean so my dolls are always clean at 100%. I find this hard in meeting when I have no magic eraser with me.

    16. Mine are fairly clean, since I don't take them outside much, and I leave them dressed most of the time. Also, I scrubbed them and buffed them with magic eraser when I first got them (all second-hand so far), so they are still rather spiffy looking. I do move them around frequently, though, so dust doesn't seem to be collecting at all. :)

    17. I always wash my hands before touching my dolls and I never take them outside so all of them are perfectly clean :)

    18. Probably not perfectly clean, since I handle them a lot and take them outside from time to time, but not dusty/dirty, either. I'll use a slightly damp washcloth or dry Magic Eraser as needed.

For wigs, I use one of those little wig picks from the American Girl shop. It works well and doesn't seem to cause a lot of breakage on the Monique Gold wigs. I also bought some of the Leekeworld Wig Wax. (Boy, that looks funny typed out!) It seemed like it made Aura's wig a little oily at first, but now it's just soft and shiny again. I haven't tried it on anything but the Leekeworld wigs, though.

    19. I consider my dolls quite clean. I feel that regular maintenance and proper handling is important in keeping your dolls clean. I store them in a large drawer away from any dust or cat hair. I don't handle my dolls until after my hands are clean. I also never handle them around food. I like to keep my dolls dressed and wigged so I periodically scrub them down with a magic eraser. If I'm planning a restringing for a doll I will thoroughly clean them with soap and water while they are in pieces.

    20. My dolls are very clean! I keep them in their boxes due to the large amount of light my apartment receives anyways, so they never get dusty. I always wash my hands before handling them and like most other members I don't handle them around food. I like to keep my things pristine, and my BJDs are no different.
