How Did You Decide Size?

Apr 9, 2007

    1. When it was time to pick out my first doll, I knew that I wanted to go with the 60cm size. The only doll I had seen previously was also 60cm, and I really liked the scale and physical "weight" of the doll.

    2. MSD's are my first choice since not only are they smaller and more portable, *cough* They're also cheaper *cough* <3

But I've broken my promise for having only MSD's Now :c I'm getting a big doll....no doubt though I'll continue collecting small dolls~

    3. Ahh, MSDs are only cheaper until you go to buy their shoes & clothes. So often, smaller things are equally-priced or more expensive than bigger ones (it being harder to sew so small)! Little dollies are also harder to dress and pose and paint and change eyes, especially if you have big Frankenstein hands like mine. ;;

I did the "getting your feet wet" thing of buying a 44cm SDC first, before any tallboys.... My timidness wore off quickly. I'm a leg woman. I like the big 60+up boys with their long beautiful legs. :aheartbea And I find the big boys really satsfying to hold and manipulate. I am a tall person and when I hold a doll, I like having my arms filled. There's something so substantial about those big boys (especially Volks with their lush heavy resin). So I found my 'niche' soon enough. And these days, the trend toward Bigger & Realer boy dolls is keeping me quite on my toes, each size more wonderful than the last.

But I do have some little 'aberration' dolls-- out of a total 19, I have 2 MSD-sized dolls, without whom my collection wouldn't be complete. In fact, Rowan the SDC, being the 'firstborn', is sort of the Alpha Male of the whole bunch, despite his size. :fangirl: I also have one 1/6 Unoa Light, who I STILL don't know why he called to me & made his way into my heart. And I have a teeny Rei-tenshi, who was a gift, but whom I really adore now despite his freakishness.

PS. MiniVega, if you want to carry tall dolls, invest in a good carrying-bag right away! Everyone sells 'em. Dollmore's, Iplehouse's, and Volks's bags are great. Or get a wheeled hard-shell suitcase, from WalMart or wherever. And-- if you are a small person, and you want to own something like an SD16, start doing bicep-curls and military-presses for your trapezius muscles. XD Them guys is heavy!

    4. Thanks a lot for your advice. I think you're right, it's important to buy a very good bag. I will check all the existing carrying-bags and have a look at the threads about this subject.
My perfect bag would be one to put my big doll and my laptop together! Mmmm, maybe, I'm asking too much!!

 Ok! And I really need too. My arms are so thin!! Maybe my doll will finally be a good motivation to get muscles

    5. I would always go for big ones, over 60. I have one doll only, a DZ Yuu, so that's 70cm and the fact that it's like a small person is what makes him more interesting. I think that eventually i will get a 50ish one, but i don't think i would go for less than that.

    6. I thought of dynamics; who is taller than who.

But I have to admit, the relative heights just managed to work out, somehow. I really just chose dolls I liked. XP Except for Renoc, but really all I did for him was to stay away from the 60CMs. Because to me, anywhere from 45-60 would have been fine, but not over 60; he couldn't be taller than Genki. It just so happened the doll I found (that I knew was somewhere in the range) was perfect; taller than Maria, shorter than Alexander. I guess I was just lucky. XP

Or you might call it fate.

    7. catwalk I have to say I am a fan of the dresden dolls as well. BAD Habit is my anthem.
I think the size of the BJD depends on the character that I am looking for. I bought MSD when I wanted a more of a child or baby image but now I want more adult characters suck as SD and 70cm figures now because I want more adult characters... time to sell and buy again!

    8. Well, my first doll was an MSD and we had some issues with bonding. So, in comes the SD. Unfortunately, I've decided now that MSD's are the right size for me and I'm completely attatched to him now. The SD is big and bulky for me, and I quite like how light my smaller boy is. Now, my dream dolls is an SD, so he will probably be my only one when I get him one day, but for now I'm sticking to the smaller dolls.

    9. My first doll was an Obitsu 60cm. I adore her (though, I greatly prefer resin) but she does take up a lot of space. I have a very limited area where I can house my dolls and their things because my boyfriend and I share a bedroom and we have another roommate, so I don't like to keep my personal items around the house, it seems rude. So, now I have mostly MSDs. It helps save a little space.

I think that once a person gets a few dolls in one scale they may tend to stick with that scale for the "swapping" factor. I know that was a motivator for me. My MSDs have their own wigs and eyes, but they trade clothes and shoes all the time.

    10. I wanted an SDC style first and foremost - so I got SDC Kaede. I wanted a kinda smaller doll that still looked adult-ish.

I think I'd only like one more - a mini. So I can alternate between having a teeny and a regular size out.

I don't think I'd want a big one because it'd be just too big to deal with.

    11. I chose to get an SD size because they looked more mature. I don't like how MSD's look around 7, and tiny ones even younger. If I ever want to do tasteful nude pics of my boy, I won't feel like a pedophile. Also the first doll I saw in person was a CP Yder; I've never even seen anything smaller. My first doll will be bigger than the CP however, since it's a DOI, but I think it will be ok. We'll see.

    12. Meh...I got an MSD because I thought it was cheaper, but my MSD came with a free SD head that I later bought a body for it. The SD body was less expensive than my MSD doll, so technically, my SD cost less than my MSD, which is pretty fun telling strangers who ask.

In the end, I'm not sure which doll size I prefer. MSDs are smaller, lighter, and portable, but SDs definitely appeal to me more from an aesthetic point of view. Though if I ever buy another doll, it would probably be an MSD. Then I'd have one big doll with a bunch of little minions ^w^

    13. I think I'll only end up with 60+cm dolls. The MSD-sized bodies just look too young for my tastes. Unless I was developing a young character, I'll be sticking with larger sizes.

    14. I like SD more than MSD. I considered them both, though. It's just an overall preference thing for me, I suppose, though I do love some MSDs. I just felt that an SD suited me better.

    15. "Bigger is better"
thats what I thought at the time.
So I ended up with a 70cm doll! XD

    16. Me too! X3

Now even 60cms seem to small to me :sweat
so I choose to order dolls only SD or bigger

    17. My girl is an MSD size and I think its perfect for her personality. Shes very tiny and delicate. I do want a larger doll - I'm saving up for one now. But I find the really small dolls kinda....easy to lose, like my old Barbies and their millions of accessories ><

    18. I'm at college right now, so the tiny sized dolls are ideal for my dorm life ^_^

    19. well I finaly gave in last week and ordered my first doll, he is a 70 CM Dollshe boy, I guess I chose him for his mold he is just perfect for the charater he is :)

    20. I think for me, getting an MSD sized doll is the average. I would only get a 60+cm doll if that mold fit one of my existing characters. So I can't help the size on that one now can I? XD

But if I were to get just a non existing chara doll, it'd be MSD. I wouldn't go so small as to Puki's or anything.. I'd probably look them. @_@ But a Barbie sized doll would be nice. I have one in mind anyways. XD

After seeing how HUGE 60+cm dolls are.. I would.... omg. I don't think I'd want to carry that around. It'd just.. kind of.. sit on my shelf or something.
