How Did You Decide Size?

Apr 9, 2007

    1. Hm. Well..its wasn't really a decision? So okay, it was. But I didn't even question it. I just went for the 60 cm and up BJD. I just knew tinies werent for me..well...so far at least. XD

      Those might suck me in too. ;--;

    2. For me, SD's were just amazing! they're like mini people, and i guess i'm weird, but i love that about them
i am having trouble though, because i want more SD's but I also found that I'm wanting MSD's... but in my mind, the characters that i would match them to would seem, i dunno... older? than the size of them, especially since i'll have 17 year olds and 18 year olds SD's.
i can't very well have a Mini at the age of 16, huh? but, I dunno. I'll just have to see how my characters change in my head!

i am also saving for a puki, but those will be little cute little fairy people!

    3. I had 1 SD.
      Went to 2 MSDs
      Then to 2 YoSDs
      Finally 1 Tiny tiny

Realized i liked SD best xD
So i went back to SD with my dream doll. <3

I guess i decided by "Trial and Error"
      :)

I really have always loved SD.
I dont know why i got out of the size in the first place.
I love the weight of them, how they fit in my arms when i carry then,
it just all seems so perfect XDD.

    4. The mold was/is the deceiding factor for me.

    5. I haven't got my first doll yet and it will still probably be a while away but I've finally decided on going with MSD size. Reason? I saw some real, in person BJDs on Saturday for the first time... holy crap! I knew they were big but they were much larger then I could ever imagine!! They were in a display case but I can only guess how heavy they would be. So now seeing how big they actually are I've decided that MSD is the size for me, for now at least:)

    6. The size chose me. I did not want a large doll, but when I saw the DIM Lloyd
sculpt, I just had to have him.

    7. When I look at dolls I look at all sizes. Size doesn't matter to me, it's more about the mold. I love SD the most, but I still like everything down to Pukis. Besides, I think it would be fun to have a variety.

    8. I started with a MSD, then sold that one when I bought another one. I was totally convinced that MSD was the right size for me. Now I'm going to sell this one and buy a SD. I don't know what made me change my mind... Right now I'm just kinda curious to know what it's like to own a larger doll. ^^ But I might just go back to MSD if SD isn't "my" size. I think it's kinda 'trial and error' for me.

    9. I promised myself I would never get an SD.

Their size is HUGE O_O (well, I thought it was when I first saw one, and I still think it's like having a small child!), but it seems like there are so many more options for SDs - more clothes, patterns, wigs, shoes, etc.

I've only had MSDs and minis - I like the size of the MSD because it is easier to carry around and take wit me places, but there are two SDs in particular that have really GRABBED me - (Souldoll Hye and Osu.)

So now I'm borderline considering selling my MSDs to get an SD (CONSIDERING, not decided, but it did occur to me), since I think I'd like all of my dolls to be the same size (apart from the anthro minis, which I don't care about their size. XD), but it is certainly not something I'd jump into.

My two main concerns are: them being TOO big (My MSDs can fit into my carry-on suitcase PERFECTLY, whereas an SD I'd definitely have to buy a carrier), not to mention carrying them places - I can't imagine carrying more than ONE SD with me at a convention/doll meet/etc. The other concern is the cost.

Now, I don't like to put a price-tag on a doll - I won't buy a cheaper one just 'because' it is what I can afford; I will save to get the dolls I want if I really love their face mold, body, etc, but realistically, spending around $650 for one doll is very scary for me, and not very realistic. (Please don't be offended by this - I am speaking for MYSELF.) Coinciding with this, I'd like to have multiple dolls of this size, if I were to do this - (at least three), or maybe even more. The most I think I could justify in spending on a doll though, is around $500 (it'd depend on if it were LTD, or special though), but too much more above that seems out of the question for me!

So, doll owners, give me your opinions!

If you started with MSDs, what made you switchover to SDs? If you have no desire to get an SD and love your MSDs, I'd like to hear from you, too! ^_^

Give me any kind of pros/cons. I've love to hear them all.

    10. Well for me I love the SD. I really don't think that I could carry around a MSD. Not to offend anyone at all, but they feel kinda barbi/ish to me. I really love the SD because they do have so many more possibilitys!!! And I like the fact that they are kinda like a small child, almost..... You can still throw them in a bag, if there becoming a neusince to carry.

    11. Well, of all the "SD-sized" dolls out there, Hye is quite small in comparison, so maybe it won't be as much of a shock as you think. ^_^
Since she's also hyper-jointed, you'll be able to fold her up for travel.
I had a Shinydoll once (one of the first hyper-jointed bjd out there) and she was surprisingly tiny, once posed kneeling, for example.

In general I just go by the mold, if I like it, then it doesn't matter what size it is.

Either way, you'd get accustomed to it. You just have to figure out if you can afford to try it!

    12. I started with MSDs, and I occasionally buy SDs, but I still prefer the mini girls. It's not even necessarily about practicality... I just like the size of them better.

A big pro for SDs, in my opinion, is there are a lot of better clothes to buy for them. But I change their outfits less because it always ends up being more work. MSDs are a very nice, comfortable size--I find them easier to pose because of their smaller joints, I don't feel like I'm wrestling with them when I change their outfits, and as you mentioned, are lighter and easier to carry around.

Honestly I don't think it's something you can guess at--until you have one and experience the difference, you just never know. Size difference doesn't really bother me, my SDs stay in one corner of my room, and my MSDs in another. They're like two different collections for me. :sweat

    13. I started with an SD and an MSD. I love my SD and want to get a mate for her. Otherwise I am finished with SD size. They are gorgeous, but they are larger, more expensive, and I want the ones I have to remain special to me.

I love MSD because they are smaller and they fit into a lot of the clothing I already have. I am familiar with the size from the vinyl dolls I have and it is just easier for me to have them.

Nothing says you can't have multiple sizes or a certain number of dolls and if you really do love the SDs, go for it. I think you would be really happy with them and if not, you could always resell them.

    14. All I own is SD size so I wouldn't be drawn to MSD. I have thougth of getting a Narae but decided against it the last minute. I think many of us seen to collect one size or the other.

    15. I'm the sort of person who likes a variety in their size. I don't prefer either. I actually own an "SD", 2 "MSD" and 1 Tiny. It gives me options and choices even though i love them all equally. But i prefer minis.

    16. Well MSDs and SDs both really have their pros and cons about them.

My first two dolls were MSD but I really wanted an SD first but since there were some msds i was wanting ya know the money just happened to be there faster than it was for an SD. I still currently have both msds and sds. 5 msds and 3sds, and another sd on the way.

I definitly agree that MSDs are soooo much easier to carry around. Generally their price is cheaper as well, but yes seriously there are not nearly as many clothing items and accessories as there are for SDs.

I can't really say why I love SDs so much more, but I just like the size a little better. It's actually easier on me to carry around an sd on my arm than an msd due to the size (the msds because of how i have to carry them hurt my wrist a bit), but they get heavy faster. But I have sooooo many oodles of clothes and what not for my sds just because it is literally more readily available.

The oddest thing for me pesonally is that I do find it easier to do faceups and make clothes for msds. You'd think the smaller the more difficult but not so for me. oh well.

    17. I started with msd sized dolls and really thought that's what I'd stick with. Money played a small part, but it was really more that I felt a little intimidated by the size and weight of an 60cm doll. However, that changed when I started buying dolls to represent specific characters of mine. The sculpts that looked like my guys where all SD sized. I know have a lot more 60cm dolls than minis, however I still love my minis too. I got used to the weight of an SD and am very comfortable carrying them around, posing, and playing with them.

    18. Well I have started with MSD and plan to stay with them.... SD are just soooooooo big....but I like their molds to........

    19. The simplest answer is that the sculpts that most appealed to me when I started were only available in SD-size. That was really the decider for me... and if I was going to spend all this money on a huge resin doll, I thought I might as well go all-out

    20. I love what you guys are saying, I really can't ever see my self with an MSD. I think that they are also harder to find in more mature mold.... The weght of them don't bother me at all, also I am a guy so that might have a little more to contribute.

I wouldn't be apposed to a MSD, If I found the right one though. I have seen some cute ones at a meet I had gone to that was near me, but I had never thought twice about the SD size.

To all that are trying to find there "perfect size" I would say go to a local meet and hold someones and see what you like more, thats what I did and it was great.... If you talk to people they are normaly really good about letting you handle there dolls!!!
