How Did You Decide Size?

Apr 9, 2007

    1. Well for me I love the SD. I really don't think that I could carry around a MSD. Not to offend anyone at all, but they feel kinda barbi/ish to me. I really love the SD because they do have so many more possibilitys!!! And I like the fact that they are kinda like a small child, almost..... You can still throw them in a bag, if there becoming a neusince to carry.

I think that they are also harder to find in more mature mold.... The weght of them don't bother me at all, also I am a guy so that might have a little more to contribute.

I wouldn't be apposed to a MSD, If I found the right one though. I have seen some cute ones at a meet I had gone to that was near me, but I had never thought twice about the SD size.

To all that are trying to find there "perfect size" I would say go to a local meet and hold someones and see what you like more, thats what I did and it was great.... If you talk to people they are normaly really good about letting you handle there dolls!!!

    2. I thought I was going to stick with MSD, but after I got my first (a limited), I couldn't decide on another msd to get, so I decided to get a puki! I'll have it later tonight. So I think it's more of the look for me...
I plan on getting all of the pukis since I find them all adorable, but will have to wait and see how much I like the little one. There are a few Yo-sd that I like as well. I was also considering an SD or larger, as there are a number of molds I like, but I'm a little nervous about em as they are so much bigger. Though it seems outfits are about as much for them, sometimes cheaper, as they are for msds, and I hear they are easier to make clothes for. I have a feeling I'll end up with at least one of each size by the time I'm done...

    3. my first doll was an msd. i thought i'd only stick to one msd doll for a looong time, but my bond with him started to flake and i became bored with him. u_u; when i played with larger dolls at meets i was always fascinated by their size and they had a lot more weight to them it seemed (i also really loved the sound their joints made ! i'm so weird.) while my msd was so light and didn't have as many posing options.

when dream of doll released their 'dream of idol' line, that was the last straw. xD i knew i hadn't bonded with my msd, so i sold him and 'updated/revamped' his character to an older version. (: now i am in the midst of waiting for my first SD -- a 7o cm guy, no less ! -- and i am so excited.

      i am so much more drawn to the SDs whenever i am at meets and i have a lot more fun playing with them than MSDs. the weight of carrying them means nothing to me, it's just like a heavy bag or something. xD and they do have tons more mature clothing options, while the msds seem to lean more toward children's or more youthful stuff. ;A;

    4. Even though I haven't gotten my own doll yet, I'm actually drawn to the MSDs. The little guys are more adorable, and are -for me- easier to relate to. I plan on getting three minis, and then I want a DOI. -that's kind of a huge leap huh?- But I think it would be cute having an assortment, rather than an assembled army of same-sizes. So if you want an SD, go for it.

    5. At first I wanted to get one of the SD, but...they cost too much for me. [I didn't receive mine yet...so yeah] And when I saw the MSD guys [somehow when I said that aloud, it sounds weird], they were too adorable and cute, and my friend said they're easier to handle than the SDs.

And I'm more drawn into MSDs now, than SD, not because of money, but because they're cute with their "innocent" looking faces.

    6. One of the things I've learned about this hobby, is never say never. ;)
I thought I'd never have more than one. (I now have 13, 14th on the way!)
I thought I'd never get a tiny. (I now have a tiny, and a tiny tiny!)

I'm fairly split between Mini and SD sizes. Six SD, five MSD. They each have their charms.
I go for the face first. If I love it, it doesn't really matter to me what size package the bugger comes in. I have strong arms. :) I have a large cavas bag from Lands' End that I carried three SD around in at the last meet. :sweat

But as others have said, you won't really know until you handle one in person. Hit up a meet near you and check out some of the SD sized dolls there. :) It would be cheaper than buying one and finding out later that they really are just too bulky for you.

    7. I think it's just personal taste. I have had three MSD-sized child dolls and two mature MSD-sized dolls (Unoas), but after a while, I decided that I prefer dolls with lifelike faces. I bought a big Dollshe guy and sold the Unoas and all of the child dolls except for my favorite. The small ones are cute, but they're not for me.

    8. For me, I got a mini first not out of cost or size, but simply because the sculpt suited my character ( as all my boys are based after preexisting characters ), since my boy is around the 13-14 age range, but puts in airs as of being much older. So a DOC Kirill really fit him well for that, not to mention he's one of my shortest characters I have, less than 4'5", so I really thought having him as an SD sized boy would have been just a bit silly.

After that, I planned the rest of my crew, most of whome I noticed also seemed to be on the shorter side, and while finding mini sculpts that were mature enough as well as looked like them was difficult, I didn't want to suddenly have one mini and then a 60cm standing beside one another when their characters were only 3 inches apart.

For the rest of my family I plan on only one more mini, and then lastly, a 60cm boy, Sethos. Now Sethos is what has me very worried. Since I've never owned an SD sized doll before, I'm half dreading that I'll LOVE the size. XD Not because I'd sell my mini's and "upgrade" them ( personally, I loathe the term 'upgrade', it makes it sound like mini's somehow aren't as good as the bigger dolls which I beg to differ) since I know no other sculpt will fit them not to mention I get rather attached to my things just the way they are, but because them I'm afraid I'd be tempted to actually go through with the process of bringing home my pathetically long BJD Wishlist of Doom which consists only of SD sized dolls, except for I think 1 lonely little mini boy. xD Truthfully though, I am a bit glad that there are so fewer mature minis out there, since that really helps me out in the long run. x3 Since I prefer mature faced minis over the childish looking ones, now all the ones I really prefer are or will either be owned by me or my best BJD friend. <3

      Wow...I forgot what I was answering. Sorry. @.@;

    9. Wow, this thread has been around for so long I now have to eat my words. I broke my SD only rule because of a little creature called Baha. He was only a cat, right? So he really didn't count. Then along came little Lucy with all those tiny double joints, simply irresistable. Discovered mature tinies next & they could wear Barbie clothes. I had the good stuff & wondered what to do with it. Aren, Uyoo, Metel & Kimmy solved that problem for me.

So after that the flood gates were opened & I indulged in a Fresh Day Alice that I'd loved followed quickly by Miryu who almost was my first doll untill I decided I preferred the big kids. Narin & Narae joined the gang as well as their big siblings already lived here.

But still the SDs rule. I have more of them than the tinies & MSDs combined. I'm a lover of big dolls & these kids fit the bill.

    10. I personally prefer the MSD and Yo-SD sizes for "play", but the SD size (and taller) for more "display" if that makes sense. They are a lot more imposing and have more presence, especially if they are posed in extreme poses. Another factor is clothes, shoes and the like. SD and taller are expensive to shop for in comparison to the Yo-SD and MSD sizes.

I like my dolls to have extensive wardrobes and wig options.

    11. Personally I just fell for the mold - that the doll was 70cm didn't bother me too much. I just knew I wanted that one and no other would do! :)
      xXx

    12. So far I only have a tiny (and another on the way) and an MSD. I don't really see myself getting an SD sized doll anytime soon, not because I don't like them but because I don't have the shelf space for one that big. And I think I'd worry about it if I didn't have it somewhere up high out of reach of the cats & dog when I'm not around!

    13. my first doll was my tann El, he may be the only SD sized doll i have but i want more SD's i love big dolls, i love peoples reactions to how big they are. and i love to cuddle with my big boy XP, i do have to MSD thought, their easer to hide then the SD sized dolls(the parents don't know about my other boys LOL:doh)

    14. I don't think I will stick to just one size. as long as it fits their character, their size doesn't matter. what matters to me is that thei have to look good together. I mean, their should be the same 'basic'... so the smaler dolls don't look out of place and really like just younger teens from the same 'world' (hard to express in english <.< *sigh*)
I hope you get what I mean ^^'

the first doll I'm gonna buy is a SD one, because I feel in love with him the first time I saw him (and didn't know about the size xD). I would like to be more impressed by smaller ones, so I wouldn't have to pay so much for them (and clothes of course) but when you love a doll, size doesn't matter ^^ it's a decision by heart~

    15. I like SD's and Tinys mostly, though, I am still going to get my MNF Miyu. I just got dolls of all different shapes and sizes until I found some I really liked. It really depends on the mold and company to me, rather than a certain size in general.

    16. I simply decided on an SD first because I didn't find any MSD facial sculpts that fit what I had in mind.

    17. At first I wanted and SD because they're big, and it seemed so fascinating. I still love SD's, but now I'm loving MSD's and Tinies as well... I love them all! lol

    18. I decided on MSD because SDs are too heavy to carry around for long periods of time, and I am lazy. XD Plus I just think MSDs are so cute! Not that SDs aren't cute. :3

    19. I had a hard time visualizing size without seeing them in person. For me, I've been attracted to face sculpts in both MSD & SD size...however I just couldn't decide on the size issue. After thinking long and hard I had two things I knew I wanted in my first BJD - 1. A girl. 2. BUT, one that wasn't an adult woman sculpt...more or less androgenous with a somewhat flatter chest. I didn't want her to scream 'female' if that makes sense? It seemed after looking around more that there were a few MSDs that seemed to fit the ticket.

What made the big decision for me was going to a meet and seeing all different types/sizes of dolls in person. I knew then that I'd be happiest starting with a MSD (though the future may hold a SD ;). It was really great seeing them IRL and just deepened an already crazy love...LOL

    20. I sort of jumped headlong into the hobby with SD13 sized boys. :sweat During my initial phase of browsing and researching ABJDs in general, I was really intrigued by their size. I'm such a nerd too that I made a physical size chart before I even had one and went around comparing to to everything. It's funny... I don't remember if I thought they were bigger or smaller than they actually are before I finally managed to buy one. All I know is that, quite personally, SD13 size has been perfect for me since day one: Enough doll to understand the price, heavy enough to be substantial, but not too cumbersome. :aheartbea
