How Did You Decide Size?

Apr 9, 2007

    1. i chose an msd becausei t was the first doll i fell in love with. Also my dad doesnt really know all the details about this hobby much less the price soo the msd is easier to hide.

    2. At first I was going to let Tohma be my first BJD. He's going to be a DoI Luke 2, only partially because I'm a believer in the "bigger is harder to break" idea.

But then I saw miniRyuichi, who's a Elfdoll Hana Devil, and I fell in love with his mischevous look, and that was it!

So now miniRyuichi's half paid for, and I must admit I'm scared to death at the idea of such a small boy for my first one. :sweat But his being small is also going to help me, because I will be so super careful with him that by the time I get Tohma, I'll be comfident enough to handle a boy that huge!

And since I can't sew (yet*_*) I don't have to worry about that.

So I guess I'm going from one extreme to the other, since for me it wasn't their size that determined me,but their faces, which I fell in love with.:love

      Ryuichi

    3. Everyone I've gotten has been based on how they look, not proportion. Like LE dolls whose faces I fell in LURV with or an MSD doll I decided would make a good representation of a role playing character. Usually its the cast of the face itself that has sold me..

    4. I personally like the 43-45 cm dolls. I think they are very cute and I love sewing clothes for this size doll.

    5. I chose and MSD because I randomly went through luts,

And BAM! Had to have him lol,

I havent found many other's his size I like though,

I really do love SD molds though...

I guess for me it won't really matter, I'll know better what size I want once my friend's dollshe gets here and I can try out the size lol

    6. I chose MSD because I adore the Chi scuplt, and I think 60cm would be a bit awkward for me.
He fits perfectly in my arms and looks adorable!
He's also easy to sew for~

But I'm open to any size!
      :)

    7. One thing I really like about the SD is being able to buy things for him in regular stores (I guess you could for other sizes too, but it might be harder) - I go out shopping and come home with all this 1/3 sized stuff (Target just had these great tiny lamps and Marshalls has little chests that are intended to be jewellery boxes and Barnes and Noble had tiny color pencils). Why am I saying this like it's a good thing? It just means that now I can spend even more money on this... sigh.

    8. I started with msd. I needed to ease into the cost of these dolls. I found a previously owned one from Volks, so I just purchased it. I had heard about Volks and wanted to see one. She was cute. When I got more money I took it slow with the SD size to see what they were like. I bought a head first. Then body. I liked the larger size at the time. I have sold both of those and now have gone the reverse and purchased a few tinies and like them. So...I guess I have been happy to try them all out! I find the msd and tiny, my favorite for now. Easy to work with. Still...there is something about how cool the large ones are too.

    9. When I first wanted a doll, I decided that the bigger, the better. I decided if I was going to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a doll, it better be a REALLY ridiculous amount of money.

So I only looked at 60cm dolls.

I'm realizing now, although I love my Bella to death, that I would've been perfectly happy with a 45 cm. I'm coming to really love a lot of 45 cm dolls, but at the idea of getting one, it's either as a little sister/friend to Bella, or nothing. If I were to get a 45 cm boy, there could be no romance. D: Because I'm just not cool with that, he would look like a child next to her. I feel like I got so wrapped up in my snobbishness that I may have missed out on an opportunity for some very beautiful 45cm.

It's just some random thoughts, that's all. XD I don't think I'm quite ready for a second doll yet, Bella isn't even quite right (her head/face is wrong for her character, I'm realizing)

What are your thoughts on doll size? When you got your first BJD, why did you choose the size you did?

    10. I sort of have the same issue as you're having. My first doll was an SD Nono because I loved her face, and I was and am genuinely happy with that choice. *hugs Gwena* However . . . starting with a doll that size seemed to have a big impact on what my future doll choices could be, size-wise, since I am really picky about scale. The only solutions I could think of are: 1) make your mini dolls be a different race, such as halflings/faeries/etc; or 2) keep your minis and big dolls apart from each other, like in their own separate worlds.

I only ever did manage to fit one mini into my doll family, as the above two options didn't work out for me. And that mini is a kid. Oh well! Best of luck to you in your doll selections. :daisy

    11. While I haven't bought any BJDs yet, I'm having this exact problem. On one hand, I'd like to get a 60cm doll because they are gorgeous. On the other hand, my other dolls (non-BJD) are 27cm and I'd like to have them interact. The 60cm would just tower over the girls and just seem....wrong. Maybe I just haven't found a ~27cm that sweeps me off my feet yet.

    12. I'll admit, when I first got into the hobby I looked around randomly, found DOD, and saw Homme Ducan and got him after falling in love with his mold right away. xD After I discovered DoA and started really learning about dolls. I knew basically how big he'd be and such, and I wanted a larger doll, but I was still surprised when I got him. I now have two SDs, as I love their size, and I have 2 MSD on the way home.

I wasn't really interested in MSD at first, but after owning such huge dolls I'm looking forward to something small. This isn't to say I don't love my big dolls, I just know I'll be glad to have something that isn't as heavy or a hassle to carry.

My only concern is my dolls looking out of proportion next to each other, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. [Which should be soon, since they should ship in the next few weeks. @_@]

    13. Ooh, congrats!! I LOVE Ducan, I think he's one of the sexiest dolls I've ever seen. XD He also makes a really hot girl! I can't wait to see pics of your new dolls!

And I feel exactly the same way, I would absolutely love to have a 45 cm! Maybe someday Bella will have a little sister/friend, I suppose. My doll isn't really in a fantasy existence, but the faeries/halflings idea is a good one!

    14. I originally got a 45cm, I had heard their stability was better than 60cm, and I chose from a company whose posing was quite good. Eventually, due to character, I changed to a 60cm. I don't regret the change, I'm ok with it, however due to lot of work lately I haven't really had the chance to play with him XD.

    15. Aww. D: Well, your Cedric is just gorgeous. <33 Clearly, I'm a fan of DoD. XD

    16. I started out looking at the SDs because I wanted a doll larger than my mum's Revlon doll. Funnily enough, that first boy (a DiM Achernar on a Domuya body) seems to look good with any size doll, and he loves cuddling smaller dolls. His partner is a Dollshe, a 70cm doll. My other doll, Christopher is one of the shorter SD-range boys, and his partner is going to be a Lati Blue, the tallest MSD-range boys. Oddly enough, while Tanal looks good next to anybody, Christopher looked distinctly odd next to an El the other day... or maybe, the El just looked like he had a bubble head...

I think I would be bothered pairing a distinctly childish doll with a more mature sculpt, but humans come in a range of heights, and it doesn't stop us. My grandfather was about 16" taller than grandma, while in the family next door as I was growing up the husband was distinctly shorter than his wife.

    17. Thanks, I totally love my boy. I'm smitten with all things DOD. xD

Well if you really want one then don't hold back, especially if there is a certain MSD in particular you want. You could always try to get a tall/long legged MSD so it wouldn't be quite as short compared to your SD. [It wont be by much, just a few cm, but it might be just enough for it to look good.]

And since I'm getting MSD from DOD and I have a girl DOT I can see if the hight isn't too bad once they arrive and let you know how they look together if you want. I mean, you don't HAVE to get a DOC obviously, but I know the boys have a long legged version. [I didn't order the long legged version, but as I said, it's only a few cm...] Besides, it can't hurt to see how they'd look. [My friends also have a MSD AOD boy and a DZ MSD girl if you want to see how they look with a DOT girl. They might look better together than you thought, and the height might not be an issue. :3 I mean they obviously look smaller, but they look pretty good size wise, IMO...]

    18. My first doll was an ElfDoll Sooah Queen Ellie. I love her.. But she is GIGANTOID THE DOLL WHO ATE MANHATTAN!! LOL! Really though.. I have her, a DZ Celine and a Soom Beryl. I also have five MSDs and five tinies. I've found I like the MSD siize best. For me, I wouldn't get rid of my big girls, but so far I've just been getting littler dolls.

I actually chose my first doll completely based on her face. Another factor was that it was from an American seller. Since it was my first experience I wanted to stay local. Also, she was a fullset. She was a good 'learning the ropes' doll, though pricey. Since then its been the face of the doll/body etc that draws me in. I don't look at the size as much, but I'm finding myself drawn to cuter, less mature dolls. That translates to smaller dolls. But I love all sizes, lol.

    19. MENOLLY, are you a Dragonriders of Pern fan? 8D Or is it just name coincidence?

Sorry, not a very useful comment. XD

    20. size means nothing to me, except if i'm making the clothes or commisioning. lol. first was a tiny second was a msd thrird was a 70cm. i now have 4 tines 2 msd and 1 70cm with one more tiny on the way and a 70cm off to be modded then come home. :) so yeah my 70cm does have a msd 42cm girl freind so size real doesn't matter. lol
