How Did You Decide Size?

Apr 9, 2007

    1. I'm heightist really, so I always think taller = older. It's often reflected in the sculpt, so I don't think it's just me. I have an SD so far, who's pretty much grown up, and I'm getting a YoSD soon because I like the babyish sculpt compared to the grown up sculpt.

I checked the size wit h a ruler before I ordered, so I was a little shocked at how tall SDs are. And yes, they are a bit heavy, but I think it's substantial for its size, y'know?

    2. When I got my first doll, a Goodreau MSD, I fell in love with her at a store and went back (almost an hour) the next day to get her. I knew next to nothing about BJD's, only that she was so gorgeous and different from other antique dolls, Kish dolls, Barbies and others I have collected. Next I started looking online and bought a full size - loving her just as much. They were so interesting & unique, and I didn't think I'd like the tinies, as I had alot of other small dolls. Then I saw a Jamiedoll Ara on Ebay, bought her, and she was my absolute favorite until I got a Volks Yo-sd. Those two are my favorite sizes - small enough to carry and not take up a ton of space, but large enough to dress them in some really nice outfits. Randi

    3. The sculpt of my first doll determined the size of my main dolly family... The MSD elf I found matched my style of drawing that character, so I bought him. So naturally when I decided to expand the family, it was two more MSDs. The Puki came next, and the character is in scale with the others that way; likewise as I get the Yos they'll all be in scale too.

I kind of feel lucky that I ended up going with MSD, because not only can I carry them around really easily, they all scale pretty much correctly to what I want too. :) The planned and floating head SD don't quite fit, but they're not really part of the family anyway...

    4. *looks at SD* Oooooo, big!
      That's how I decided.

    5. I choose whatever size body belongs to the head that I want! As a result... there is NO consistency of clothing-sizes in my house. And as a result of that... I have so bloody many different clothing-boxes for each group of different-sized dolls. But I love a shopping challenge. ^.^ Basically, size doesn't matter much to true love.

My first doll was a Mini-- SD Cute Arashi, 45cm. I adore him, but he was a bit of an experiment in "getting my feet wet" before charging after the 60cm Tokyo Boys I craved. (That fear sure didn't last long.) It is true that I much prefer larger dolls to smaller. I have 3 Minis that I love madly; and I have 2 Tinies who came to me almost by accident even though I don't like Tinies. That's enough small things!

All of my other dolls are 50-80cm, in varying shapes & thicknesses. I like handling bigger dolls. They're easier to dress & carry, they're more comforting to hug/hold, and they're way easier to work on (painting, eyeball installation, etc.) if you happen to have big hands. However, if another Mini comes along that makes me fall in love, it doesn't mean I won't want him too.

I am looking forward to meeting my superhero-sized Iplehouse Akando when he arrives: That guy is so hefty he will probably be able to pin me into my chair when I hold him on my lap.

    6. I think I'm just more comfortable with MSD sized dolls ^ ^ SDs seem (To me specifically) like it would be harder for me to play with them, and more work to carry around, and I also don't like dolls that look older.... I'm 20, so some of the SDs look older than me, and this doesn't really appeal to me too much. I think I might get an SD in the future, just to see what it was like, but I'd get a 'cute' looking one with larger eyes, like a B&G Sky. ^ ^
But overal, I'm an MSD girl <3 (Tinies also seem pretty cute, but....they're really small O o; And my camera isn't good enough to take decent pictures of something that small)

    7. When I bought my Puki, I didn't really think about size. I just wanted a kitty doll. It was later that I realized she was on the smaller end of the scale.

But right now I'm really wanting a 60cm doll (or bigger O_O ) because I'm short, and I think it'd be hilarious to have a doll almost half my height. With tiny things I'm constantly paranoid about hurting them/losing them/etc. But I think a bigger doll would be right up my alley in terms of portability (I LOOOVE huge bags) and artistry.

    8. I have to agree -- I feel like my current Barbie-sized girls are too... small. Seriously. I can't sew for them, at ALL. So I've finally decided that the fashion designer in me needs a 60CM girl. Thus me having "The BJD Talk" with my parents and the beginning of my SERIOUS planing to get DoD's Shall.

So... I'll probably be one of those that stick with SD-sized dolls. :]

    9. When I first saw BJDs I never even considered size. At the time, I was mostly only looking at SD sized dolls because those were the ones that really caught my eye. It wasn't until I took out an actual tape measurer that I realized how big they really are. And even then, it didn't really hit me until I was physically holding one two years later. I guess I didn't really choose the size. It just sort of happened to be that way. But now I'm looking into some MSD sizes and a couple smaller ones as well.

    10. I orderd mine online like yesterday I'm dying for it to arrive its a 60 CM obitsu but yeah I mean I chose that size cause I felt the bigger the less likely I'll lose it and it wont break as easy! Besides it may seem expencive but its worse it. Just take your time on planning out what size is best and youll come to a finish and finally get one your wanting!

    11. I have two 27cm sized dolls, and two MSD sized dolls. I love the 27cm sized, they’re kind of like little pixies to me. I do think that MSD is my preference, they just seem large enough for me to feel like I’m not holding a Barbie and small enough that I don’t feel awkward holding or carrying around a big heavy doll (I’m 5’2). I have been looking at a couple SD sized girls though. I don’t want all my dolls to be the same size.

    12. I started out wanting an SD10... I have a little Yo.
I would like a variety of sizes, but want them to look fairly 'natural' together.
I guess the Yo was a perfect choice because she is portable and the price was good.

    13. I'm planning my first doll purchase right now, and size hasn't been a factor at all, really. I fell in love with a sculpt so I'm getting her. :)

    14. I just started out small to see if i could handle having a doll of that small in my room.
when i did, i wanted some bigger dolls but i really didn't want to get anything smaller than a MSD after that XD

(until I discovered the Pipos Bao and Robbin)

    15. I thought : "As big as possible!" and my opinion hasn't changed x3

    16. i got an MSD because i didn't want a tiny
      but i didn't want a huge doll
      kind of like an experiment
but my next girl is going to be a soom gem ^_^
has to wait till i get my summer job though

      but so far
      i have only MSDs
      only 2 ^_^
but i think everyone's mind could be changed
they just have to find the right mold for them to change too

    17. I decided to get a small one, first....you know 11"? I was afraid of her being a hassle to carry around, but now I realize I can get a larger one and be comfortable with it :D
But I've had this obsession with larger dolls since I was a kid....
I really want to get an 80cm just to be silly and point out how close to my height the boy'll be. But my next darling will be 45cm, which is a decently large jump from my last one.

    18. ...I got an MSD first only because I couldn't afford an SD o3o; But after owning an MSD, and a friend buying an MSD, they're definitely my favorite size because they're not too small or too big, and apparently a good number of the dolls on my wishlist are MSD, so it all works out fine 8D
Although, I do have a 70cm too...and plan to get a 90cm one day. [yes, you read that right NINETY CM] But yeah, MSD is a good size lol

    19. My first boy is going to be a 63cm, and the funny thing is that when I saw him first, I didn't know his size, but I knew I was definitely going to get him. it really does just depend on what catches my eye, because even though I love bjds, there aren't many that get my attention enough to make me commit to buying.

    20. Im a huge fan of the big dolls, and I don't mean dolls bigger then Puki, because that doesn't really say it. I'm referring to the really big (!) dolls, like Soom Mecha Angel. I don't know why I like big dolls so much. Maybe because I love to sink my teeth into detail, and achieving fine detail in the things you make for your dolls is easier if the doll is on the bigger side of the scale. I could very well buy a 65 cm doll if I found someone that I really liked, but I usually don't spend time looking around sites for dolls smaller than 70 cm. My first doll, which Im eagerly waiting for, is a Mecha Angel Rex, so he's big, 80 cm to be exact. But of course I didn't buy him for his size, I fell in love with him and he just happened to be big ^^
