How Did You Decide Size?

Apr 9, 2007

    1. mmm... portability.

i don't have a car, and i travel a lot. i commute a lot.. and i sleep over at friends places a lot. and my grandpa is a bit of a klepto so i cant leave valuable stuff behind. when i first held an msd, i actually thought, wow, theyre actually pretty heavy. then i met my first sd. and i thought.. WOW. theyre heavier. (lolz, i know, pretty dumb) but i never thought they'd be that heavy. lolz.

anyway, i carry my friend's msd a lot now so i kinda got used to the weight now... so i'm definitely getting my msd's first. when i get used to it maybe I'll get an sd when i get a car...

    2. I did not... I first tried to find an msd... and searched everything that I liked, but when I found the perfect one, it was an SD... and nmow that I saw one in real.... I think I am going to stay with them O____o

Or go with the small cute ones after XP

    3. I just ordered my first boy last week <3 A Crobidoll Yeon-Ho, to be exact. He's an SD. My friend also has an SD. I think they're a great size. ^_^

    4. I honestly had a hard time deciding what size of doll to get.
I really wanted a bigger one, because I am a clutz and I didn't want to break the poor thing right off the bat...:sweat
So I was switching back and forth between wanting an 80cm and a 60cm
80cm are really expensive though and then I stumbled across a 60cm that I really loved so my mind was made. :)

    5. I was originally just going with whatever size doll fitted the character for that "world". But lately I'm finding I'm more interested in the bigger dolls. So I think I'm settling on SD sized dolls in the end...except the one tiny I own.

    6. My tastes tend to run to SDs mostly because I like the molds, but after my friend brought her MSD over, I knew I wanted one. He was so light and little it was impossible to stop fiddling with him! This is why I love the idea of the Fairy Land dolls, nice sculpts but smaller.

I don't know if I'd get one smaller than an MSD because I know my cats would treat it like a toy and bat it around the apartment. On the flip side, I'm not sure if I'd get something larger. I love the look of IH Akando, and his size does suit the character I'm thinking of, but I still think he's huge. I think I'd cap it at 70 cm, and only have one doll at that size. Mostly because I live in a shoe box with my significant other and three cats.

    7. My first is a Mini Gem, 30cm and honestly, it's the perfect size for me. I just had my Bobobie Sprite wich is around 43cm tall, and I find him huge! And I'll probably never have 60cm dolls. It's just... too big.

    8. I like the 60 cm dolls in general. Partly because I like their sculpts (they tend to look more grown up and realistic, which is how I prefer my dolls to look), but partly because I like the size of them. In the case of certain character dolls I intend to get, I'm trying to keep them roughly the same heights they are in their story. So my Shuichi doll, who is supposed to be uber tall, is going to be a 70 cm doll, while his boyfriend Richi, who is supposed to be quite a bit shorter, is 59 cm. Then Tohru, also part of their story, is going to be a 60 cm, because she's supposed to be slightly taller than Richi. XD I would really like it if she was like 63 or 64 cm, but I've already picked out her sculpt and it's 60 cm. Same for Charl doll, who comes from their universe but a separate story, she's only slightly taller than Tohru, so she should be a 60 cm doll as well. And Kira, who is Shuichi and Richi's daughter (biologically Shuichi's, he was the donor), would be a smashing 70 cm doll, because she's supposed to be almost as tall as Shuichi when she's grown up. I don't have plans for her to become a doll anytime soon, but I would consider what few 70 cm girl dolls are out there if/when I do.

I guess my thing is that if I have multiple character dolls from one story, I want them to be roughly the same size (no 70 cm with 45 cm dolls unless I have a story with a giant and a dwarf). So I would be okay with my Deanna and Malchrist dolls being 45 cm, if I found sculpts in that size that I liked. But Deanna doll's sculpt is a 60 cm, so I wouldn't even consider a 45 cm sculpt for Malchrist, because that would just be weird to me. And Belladon and Gabriella are both going to be MSD sized, because my best friend got Belladon that size and I found a sculpt for Gabriella in that size that I like just fine.

For a bit of perspective, I am 6' tall and built big myself, so a tiny doll is even tinier to me. XD My best friend is 5'5''ish (I always forget her exact height) and she has a 70 cm doll. He looks HUGE in her hands, but when I'm holding him he doesn't look nearly as big, because of the difference between us. I don't think I could buy a teeny doll who would fit in the palm of my hand, it would just look weird!

    9. It's quite simple with me, I love the size of the SD. I love that they are big, so most of my dolls will be SD, maybe a few MSD, but nothing smaller then that. Ickle dolls don't really interest me, apart from another collectors. I can "um" and "aw" at them like the best of 'em, but I don't want any.

    10. For my it's a little different: i don't like child-like dolls >_< <MSD and SD 10 - there are too childish for me>. Other 2 things: cost <taller are more expensive> and how to say it ... taller dolls looks more like dolls - and i really don't like it.

So the best for me are SD13, SD17 and in the other hand: SDC. Now the best for me are SDC, but it is really difficult to find nice looking boy <I'm a boy so boy-dolls for me ^_^ > ... and nice boy, very often, are limited edition >_< .

    11. I started with tinies. :) For me, just starting into the hobby (whilst introducing family members and friends to it too) I found that tinies are less intimidating to people who have never seen a BJD before and get a "Oh she's so CUTE!" reaction more often. Also, they are much more portable, weigh next to nothing, are moderately less expensive, and above all else, I just love the sculpts. Realistic, mature dolls don't do a lot for me, as I prefer my dolls to be like elves or kids.
To me, bigger dolls seem a little clumsy and awkward; for someone who is just 5'1".
I like the delicate posabilty of my puki, but I can understand that it's not the size for everyone.:3nodding:

    12. Talia is an SD13, but the decision was made based on what I had in mind for her facwe (and thus what face molds were available in each size). The smaller bodies (which I would have preferred for eaase of transporting them) disn't have a head that matched what I had in mind.

    13. I have MSD size. Initially because of the price, now because they're the molds I'm usually drawn to (I could have bought an SD-size with the money I paid for my Minifée!). I've yet to find an SD-size doll that really clicks with me aside from a SchA, but I'm not prepared to spend that much money right yet.

I'm actually quite happy with the size of my minis. They sit just right on my computer shelf and are so easily carried :) I'm not ruling out tinies or SD-size, but for now, all the molds I like are MSD size.

    14. My first doll was a Volks 27cm.. I still have her, and I love her, but she's harder to sew for, and I think I bonded with Arilla more.. Caroline was only $25, so I guess I didn't have the "HOMG THIS IS EXPENSIVE, I MUST LOVE IT" instinct I get. I chose her BECAUSE she was $25, though, so..

Arilla was my first pricey doll, and I got her because Nolavon was selling her last year - but admittedly I wanted an MSD rather than an SD. I go to conventions a lot, and I wanted something portable, so that we could cosplay togeather but my arms wouldn't die after a few hours.

I think the next doll I'm gonna get will be an MSD.. I think maybe eventually I'll get an SD or two, but hopefully by that point I'll be able to write them off as business expenses because I'll be using them for sizing to make clothing and junk.

    15. To be honest, I don't really consider their sizes when looking for a doll I like. My first was a Volks Nana because I loved her mold, and my second will most likely be the smaller Kid Delf Bory girl.

I would eventually like to have dolls of several sizes, though I do think the MSD size appeals to me more than SD, mostly for portability.

    16. Well before I got a bjd I wanted an SD size but it's hard to tell how big they exactly are on the internet even with the size listed there. So when I actually held an SD for the first time and then held an MSD i liked the MSD more because it just fit in my arms so snug ^^ I still wants my SD though XD I'll get him one day when i stop buying MSD's >.<

    17. My mom picked the size of my first doll. She wanted me to start off with an msd rather than a sd. Now I have several msds and I'm begging her for a cp El

    18. Before I really knew what BJDs were, I was mainly attracted to SD sculpts, so when I got into the hobby, they were the first ones I considered. I also saw an MSD in person, only to be a bit disappointed by its size. While my doll's body isn't here yet, I'm pretty glad that I chose to start with an SD, because his head is the perfect size. I can look at him and feel like he's almost real without being creeped out by the size. I like the idea of having a doll as big as an SD just because little dolls seem harder to interact and bond with to me.

    19. I picked a MSD because they were really cute. Also it would be my first and a good start on getting used to stringing and any other aesthetic improvement. What if I somehow screwed up something on a more expensive doll? *I have no faith in myself right now even thinking about stringing or even dying a doll*
Hopefully after this one I will get a larger doll to keep him company.

    20. I can see myself in the future mainly ordering MSD size dolls and sticking to it. They seem overall more practical in my opinion.
My house is already short on free space, I'm so small I make elderly women look tall and considering my penchant for animation, larger dolls would cause too much grief.
Then there's price. I'm clumsy as hell. I frequently trip up on air. Breaking a doll I spent half of £250 on wouldn't be as bad as breaking one I spent nearly £500 on. And things are a lot easier to replace on smaller dolls if they break.

I'd never really go for tinies. I'm already bad enough avoiding making animations of smaller toys in case our Jack Russell goes for them again. And if he ended up getting sick from nabbing one of my little toxic resin minions it'll be MY head mounted on the wall!
