How Did You Decide Size?

Apr 9, 2007

    1. I plan on getting all SDs (if I get more than one) for a multitude of reasons. Their scale makes them easier to craft clothing for than smaller dolls in my opinion (especially when sewing), not to mention that I just find the idea of such a large, beautiful doll very appealing. I'm pretty sure any and all dolls I get will be in the 60-70 cm range.

    2. I'm not against other sizes but I think I will always prefer 60-70 size dolls. I've handled MSDs and I just felt like I was going to snap the poor thing in half. I love miniature things but I need the bigger size of SDs to feel comfortable without being scared of breaking it. I don't find them heavy at all, but I think MSD's lightness is just unnerving after my big boy! xD

    3. I just chose by the facemold (She's a MSD size)... I love all aspects of the different sizes and plan to get an assortment of sizes eventually anyway~

    4. Either I bring a doll home simply because I like the sculpt in itself and then size doesn't matter - I want to try them all! ^o^ - or I have a character in mind who's body type et c. makes me go for a certain size.

    5. It's a constant gamble :) My first doll was 43cm, my second was 14cm, my third was 43cm, my fourth 55cm, my fifth 10cm, my sixth and seventh were 45cm, my eighth was 58cm and incoming ninth 41cm.

I've now discovered that 14cm is too small, but 10cm is strangely right. I prefer the 45cm dolls over the 43cm ones, and I love 55cms and 58cms equally. I won't know about 41cm until I actually have her physically with me.

The thing is, you just won't know until you see for yourself. My 10cm Puki is a lovely size and amazingly posable for her size, but my 14cm Bobobie seems far too small to do much with! I thought SDs would be far too big for me, but Souldoll Hye was my dream doll and I couldn't not get her even though I thought I preferred mini dolls. I like her height and I can do a lot more with her than with some of the others!

Try different dolls and see what you prefer.

    6. My first 3 dolls are all MSD sized. I started with that size because the only doll I'd gotten to experience in person up until that time had been that size and I knew I could handle it.

Then after getting to hold some SD dolls in person I bought one of my own. I've since decided that I really do enjoy the greater heft of SD or larger sized dolls. Not that I'm going to stop collecting MSD dolls, I've still got plenty of them on my plan to buy list, but if I can only take one doll someplace I'm going to choose my SD doll over any of my MSD ones.

    7. I agree. When I first thought about getting a doll the ability to customise and make the clothes played a huge part in deciding on the size I would like. I didn't want to paint or sew for anything too frustratingly small.

    8. I've played around with all differant sizes, but the dolls I own now are all MSD size dolls. I like the MSD sizes because they're easier for me to carry around for a while and they still aren't "barbie" like. I've held SD's and I know that I like them, but they're big, and slightly unwieldy too me....

And I'm klutzy, and SD dolls are big, which means I'm probably going to klutz with it and drop it or bang it into something, or something equally horrifying and smash the nose, or break something off it. And then I'll be horrified and sad and won't touch ANY of them ever again.

MSD's are lighter and smaller and I can carry them in the crook of my arm when I'm out, and keep them close to my body without fearing for their resin safety. Although I do fiddle about with WANTING a bigger doll, so far I haven't gotten the courage up to do so. Perhaps I'll get to wander about somewhere with a friend and carry theirs for a bit and see later. For now, MSD's are for me. ^-^

    9. I too started out with MSD size -- but then I saw the cute little Orientdoll vampire's face and was hooked. Then I saw the DZ anthro animals, then the DZ BBs and, well, my collection has ended up a mix of sizes. It makes it interesting for photo possibilities and making up "family groups". My latest arrivial is a 68cm Lian by Resinsoul and I am beginning to see why those who have the larger dolls love to make clothes for them. It is as if they want to to make them something special.

    10. I loved the DOTs/DOIs... just the way they looked when I first glanced at the DOD site. It wasn't until I started looking at sizes that I realized I really liked how big they were. Usually, SD+ size dolls look more mature than MSDs, who tend to look more like children. I wanted a teenaged doll, so that worked nicely. Of course, when I acutally got to hold a DOT (after mine had been ordered) he was bigger than I thought, as I wasn't quite sure WHAT to expect. I really liked the size, though, and I'm really glad they're as big as they are.

    11. I’ve always found that I just couldn’t learn to like MSD dolls. : / They just have to small a build for my tastes. (The only exception to this rule is my Elphaba, who just seems to take up more space then a MSD should x 3 )

    12. Well, I was just looking around a bunch of different company websites, and DoD's DoI A&D reeeally grabbed me and would NOT let go xD He's the spitting image of a character I really want to bring to doll-form, so I decided that's who I would save for :) And then I found out his size... I was a little intimidated a first (I'm only 5'0" xD) but I still felt like he was the one for me. But at the Otakon '08 meetup, I got to see a bunch of dolls up close, and really the larger ones do seem right for me!

If I'm able to get any others after my first boy (I certainly hope I can!) They'll also be SD size, since they're meant to be characters of mine that go along with the boy I'm currently waiting for :)

    13. My first was an SD(60cm), like large dolls and minibb

    14. Mostly I tend to like big dolls. For me, this has a lot to do with just their feel, the weight to them. (In other words, this could be called their "cuddleability.") I guess I also do like that it sets them so many worlds apart from the more traditional Western Barbie doll.

On the other hand, 2 out of the 3 dolls on my sort of "must have" list are actually MSD-sized dolls, so it's obvious that what's most important to me is the doll itself; its mold, how much I'm in love with its features. I'm not really too picky, other than the fact that it's really hard for me to bond with dolls smaller than MSD. Yo-SD or tiny sized dolls would just seem awkward to me. I guess it really is just personal taste to a very high degree. For instance, I don't mind photographing the different sized dolls together because in the storyline my friends have put together, our dolls will be approximately age-size appropriate.

    15. I never even considered size when I ordered my first BJD, CP Lishe. I fumbled across a picture of her one day and did a lot of research prior to purchasing her. I knew at first sight she was a must and the research only confirmed my decision. Voila, my first BJD was born. Since then, it has really been pretty much the same in which ones I decide to purchase. I truly just follow the doll that calls to me and take my time to be sure I do not make a rash decisision, as so many are tempting. I range from MSD to SD13 size and find each size has their own unique benefits and play value to them. I have to say, the only time size has come into question with buying a doll has been with SD17 size. I feel a bit intimidated with that size, yet I thought I would feel the same when I purchased my first SD13 long leg boy. I found the size wonderful and they have such a presence about them. I now am really looking forward to moving into SD17 size.

    16. Mi first bjd was 9,5cm tall, and the last 44... My dolls are groing up... XD The next will be 60cm??? XD

    17. For me, it was a combination of things, really. I had decided on a MSD dolfie early on because I liked the idea of being able to take it anywhere I went but being able to hide it easily in my bag from creepers who might wanna tease him/her or me.. or the type of people who are like "OMG OMG DOLFIE IWANNASEEEEEE!!!". x.x

There was also the money issue, I know that I didn't wanna spend $700 on a doll, because then it would be a long time before I'd be able to buy another.

And then, finally, there was Marianne... I fell in love with her instantly, and I knew that she would be my first dolfie. There wasn't a moment's hesitation, I just.. knew. I found her on ebay, and I told my dad that I'd found the doll I wanted. Now he and I have been having this conversation ever since I went to a dolfie meet-up at Jacon and was introduced to so many gorgeous dolls, but he always said to be very careful about chosing.. these weren't your everyday average dolls, after all.

So there was this Marianne staring at me from halfway across the world.. and that was it. Within ten minutes, the order was placed. I think, in all honesty, if I had a moment like that with a regular 60 cm doll it would have been the same.. but I never did, so here we are. :)

    18. I decided I didn't want to get a doll that was too big or too small. So I went for the "middle" size. It was the perfect size for me! The big ones I've seen are so heavy! How could anyone carry that? :sweat

But yeah, I love my mini sized doll and I feel I made the perfect choice for me.

    19. I've always liked miniature things, not to mention things that don't put me deep into debt, so tinies and minis have been my biggest focus. I don't want one that's too big or too small for my first doll- though I hope a cute little Puki and a bigger-sized doll are both in my eventual future. o: Right now I'm looking in the 26cm range- judging by my ruler, it's the perfect size for me to make clothes for and carry around. <3

    20. Err, so far it's been whatever size the scuplt of head/body has come in. If it's any factor at all, I'm 5'6 with my biggest doll being 80cm. I find my 80cm guy more huggable than my 60cm by far, and take him 'round the house with me when I'm just doing stuff in general.
