How Did You Decide Size?

Apr 9, 2007

    1. When I bought my first doll, my first consideration was head sculpt, second consideration price. The body of the doll was less important to me, although if I had more money I'd buy him a new body now; the scale somehow linked to that in my mind, and all of lesser importance.

However, now, much as I adore that doll, I really, really want a 1/3 scale doll. I'm not sure what it is, but I love seeing pictures of people holding SD dolls. There also seems to be another difference between MSD and SD scales in my mind: so often the smaller dolls are meant to look childish, younger, somehow less refined, wheras SD dolls capture a wider variety of looks, with more parts available. Also, obsiously, there is more room for detail on a larger doll; and more clothes, shoes, wigs, etc seem to be available for 60cm.

So despite the fact the doll top of my 'realistic wishlist' is 1/4 scale, she might not be my next resin purchase; I want a 1/3 doll really badly!

    2. For now, I like 45 cm best. I think it's a practical size, and the prices are fair for a 14-year-old who's only income is her lunch money that she's saved over the weeks. X'D I think the size is nice, though, because I don't think I'd have much room to put a ton of 60 cm dolls, and they'd be harder to travel with, as well.

I do think, though, that a lot of the time 60 cm dolls have prettier faces. Not that 45 cm don't, you just have to search harder for them. But when you do find a beautiful 45 cm doll that you really love, it's totally worth the search. *_*:aheartbea

    3. I really fell in love with the sculpt on mine before I'd even considered getting myself a doll, so size wasn't really a deciding factor; but if the same face and body had been available in a range of sizes, I think I might still have gone for SD just because that feels like a nice workable scale for making clothing and jewelry. I've made clothes for smaller dolls in the Barbie or Gene size range and some of those tiny pieces can be a bit annoying to fuss with, and it's a little harder to find trimmings and patterned fabrics that are appropriately scaled to the doll's size. (Although I must admit I'm now looking a little enviously at all the gorgeous fashion-doll-size furniture that would fit a MSD nicely, but is way too small for my SD girl...)

    4. SD is my size 60~65 cm is fine by me. I love the weight and they just seem more filling. Anything smaller makes me think twice.
I love the large size and the weight cuz then you know you bought something worth the money you shipped into it.

    5. I had an eye before I had a doll, so I picked the doll size (SD) based on the eye size. She's a big girl, though, and going forward I think I'd be more interested in MSD sized dolls.

    6. *laugh* I started with an SD. It was just that the mold caught my attention...

..now, though.. I've got SD, MSD, Tiny, and TeenyTiny. So...I guess you could say I haven't decided size at all!

    7. I never actually considered size a factor. It was purely an aesthetic choice based on the doll's sculpt. One is on the way; who knows what my doll-collecting future has in store for me? ^_^

    8. My first doll was just a little Obitsu, 27 cm or something like that. Short, about barbie's height. (I don't know a lot of the lingo for sizes yet lol) I'm intending to get a 1/4 size, like my friend has. After seeing hers, I decided I wanted one the same size. (Better for photoshoots too XD)

    9. I love to have the small size like yo-sd. 60cm is fine for me, If I still have the place for them.

    10. At first, I was surprised at how big dolls were, considering thier size comparison to something like, say a barbie doll. But now it's easy. I don't like minis for myself, very much. Tinies are too tiny. I like the bigs and that's about it.

    11. At first, what I let rule my decisions was price. I searched the internet for dolls I liked that were in my price range, mostly MSD dolls and below. But I really loved the more mature-looking SDs. So I searched for MSDs with mature faces, but the dolls I found just weren't what I was looking for.

Finally, I was just like "Gah, I'm getting an SD." So I scrounged up the extra money and bought a CP El. I wasn't going to spend three-hundred dollars on a doll that wasn't the one I truly wanted. :)

Someday, though, I may get an MSD or even something else if something catches my eye. I won't limit myself if there's something I really want. ^^

    12. To be honest, I simply fell in love with E-an, how beautiful she was, size didn't even matter...I thought at first she was maybe alittle bigger than a Barbie doll but soon realised she was much bigger! Didn't matter, large or small, I loved how she looked. So I got her! :)

    13. ^ My experience was simillar. I saw Kohya on Volks and went, 'wow!'. I looked for an MSD version, but that was the size he came in, and since then, totally the size preffered for me.

    14. I love MSD size. They're easy to carry, and don't weigh as much. Plus when making clothes for them, I never have to buy more than a quarter of a metre of fabric, because they're legs are only that long. :"D It makes making my own clothes very easy.

I suppose they're also moderately cheaper than SD size, which is good for my bank account.

Plus I think they have more of a cute factor.. Ahah.

I do want to get an SD boy eventually though....

    15. I'm just starting out collecting. I like beauty, romance and fantasy and have always collected dolls, lace, victoriana, etc. I'm considering space right now and cost. I have a few nice display places in mind around my house - places where visiting children won't be able to say, "HEY! Look at the pretty ..." No touchie. For children of a certain age, anyways. One of my friends has very small daughters, one of which has already taken home a few of my things that she liked (with my permission). In the long term I'll be looking at display areas around my house that are larger. One small room I have needs to be converted from a storage area. I'm also hoping to sell more and more of my writing pieces in the future and have more money to hobby with. :)

    16. To be honest, I just found the one mold that caught me. The fact she was a particular size didn't occur to me at the time.

    17. It really depends on the face, but I suppose my favorite is SD.

    18. My first was a 58cm SD. I thought it was cool how huge that was, and I though I'd appreciate her more if she was bigger. I also thought it was a better value.
For my second, I was innocently browsing Junky Spot and came across him. It was instant love, and I knew my second would be none other than him. i picked him based on his face, his size just happened to be MSD.

    19. My first (and only) doll I got is only 16 cm. She cost a lot, $150. I love here though XD

    20. Have to say that I just went with what I feel in love with.
Right now I have all SD sized dolls but I have one MSD on the way and plans for at least three more MSD sized ones after that.

With that said I did get a Soom Sabik when he first came out who was 70cm and I sold him.. I dont think it was really a size thing I just could not bond with him.
