How Did You Decide Size?

Apr 9, 2007

    1. MSD size is really good for me, like most people have mentioned the pros of them: Light weight, right in the middle, not too big or small, easy on space, for me the fact of cheaper doesn't factor in though. :sweat All the MSDs I want are Volks FCS or are expensive limited editions like Toppi, they range in price from $600 to $850, which is more expensive than Volks SD standards, so kind of expensive.

That being said, I'm extremely interested in Yo-SDs and SDs too, I just prefer Minis at this point. ;) All of the sizes have such interesting pros and cons to them.

    2. i really like sd's because there seems to be the most clothes out there for them. that being said, my first doll was akando, whose clothes selection is extremely limited because of his body shape. and somehow the dolls i first fell in love with after akando were 70cm dolls and their clothes tend to be more expensive.
unfortunately i am one of the sewing disabled. i can't sew a thing. and now i have dolls in all sizes, both male and female. i just can't help it!
there doesn't seem to be any reason to limit oneself to just one size doll. and after i had bought a couple of dolls, size doesn't enter into the equation for me anymore.

    3. I am suddenly grappling with this problem. I initially had no problems deciding on size, I have big non BJD dolls: 18", 22", 24" and 36". I naturally opted for 22"-25" (60cm) SD sized ABJDs. This worked very well because my 2 dolls share cloths, toys and accessories. Now, I am discovering that some ABJDs I like are 27.5" (70cm) and 31.5" (80cm). These are to me, odd sized dolls. I've never had dolls in these sizes. I'm really reluctant to buy these dolls although I love them. To make matters more interesting, one of my boys the Volks F38 who is currently on an SD13 (62cm/24") needs a 25.5" (65cm) body. There are not many bodies in the market that are 65cm, most are 70cm-80cm which is a bit too big for him and me. I am surely taking my time to decide on size.

Meanwhile, I bought the slim MSD Vinyl Delilah Noir from Ashton Drake Galleries(ADG) as part of my ADG doll collection. I regret doing this because now I have to build a wardrobe for slim MSD girls when most cloths and wigs are made for standard MSD. I have decided not to put too much resources into MSD sized dolls. I realized that I am clearly in favor of large BJDs, at least 24" (60cm). Moreover, I strongly prefer boys. No point forcing myself to buy girl MSDs or SDs when I will not love them enough to spend on their wardrobe. My heart will always be with the big boys.

    4. Ugh, I'm so jealous! :o I keep having the exact opposite problem! Everything I seem to find MSD-sized is for slim-MSDs.

    5. Well, I'm more just interested in if I like the way she looks, and the cost. If I can both agree with those, I'm set. Although, I do tend to stay away from smaller, more toddler-ish looking dolls.

I wish sizes were more consistent, I'd prefer to have my dolls all be relatively the same size if I get more than one...Whenever you see dolls together of a different size, it doesn't look like the other taller, it literally looks like one of them is a giant compared to the smaller one, it's always hard for me to think of it as 'younger' or 'shorter'......it's kinda awkward *_*

    6. Need to have an MSD clothing swap! I have a slim one (and want more), and all the clothes are standard sized too!

I'm used to a bigger width to height ratio from soft bodied dolls, so having one taller than my American Girls and much, *much* skinnier is kinda strange...though the chest and foot size on that SD sized girl is such that she can actually fit into Carpatina(slimmer than AG all-vinyl 18" play dolls) shoes and dresses, if you can find a way to take the waist in enough without making it look horrible. But she's big enough to be more like "funny bundle of sticks" than "large Barbie" like the MSDs, outweighs an AG, and it's much harder to find a halfway decent place to rest her near you if you're just hanging out where she's safe from being stepped on or sat on.

    7. i'm a big SD fan >_< my friend almost exclusively owns SD sized dolls and i guess that is why i grew to like them so much. and for my first doll i'd like a doll that size, too. but the next one is going to be MSD, simply because it fits the character i want for him in the storyline.

    8. I like MSD size.
I know most clothes fit SD dolls, and they're really beautiful.. But still. Even if it's hard to find clothes for them, MSDs are still my favorites.
SD size is also lovely, but a bit smaller just seems right for me.
The pros have already been posted, but I don't care much about weight.

    9. I own an SD, so I want my dolls in the 55-65cm SD range. Mostly because all the characters I have for my dolls are grown-up, so they have to look the part. Plus the sculpt that looked most like Vega was SD, so that became the status quo. Who knows, maybe if I had found him in MSD size, I would be into MSDs!

SDs are the perfect size and age-appearing; Iple EIDs and Mecha Angels and anyone over 70cm are simply too big for me, while most MSDs and smaller are too childlike. I confess that I really don't like YoSDs and tinies of the human variety -- too small, too young. :sorry That said, I am contemplating getting a MSD because I adore the sculpt, and she may work with my SDs!

    10. Ive just pre-ordered my first doll, and I have to say I looked at dozens of pics, face molds, etc. before deciding, this is my very first BJD doll purchase. I have friends who have BJD's and I have seen their dolls, so wasn't buying wtihout some knowledge. One thing that occurred to me at the last minute was- does size figure into your decision?

This was the last thing I asked myself, and then I figured- in this case yes. I ordered a Soulkid MSD Katie A. and I have to say though I really, really wanted an SD, I need to make room in the doll /dollhouse display room so she has a 'safe' place away from our cat, etc. Also, certain clothing & shoes was a consideration, along with furniture and props, (and how well she would fit in with the other dollies...) I decided though I love the SD size, I would have to wait until I had sufficient space and cleared out some clutter to make room for that doll that I have no my list.

Anyone have this last minute problem when deciding upon purchasing a doll- or do you figure it out later??

    11. A doll + all its accessories is going take up space, and if you have a limited amount of space like I do, size does matter. As much as I like the look of the Soom Mecha Angels, 80cm is more than I have space for. My 65cm boy already hogs a dresser drawer all to himself, and things are not going to improve with another planned big boy later.

Otherwise, since I do not do photostories, doll size is not a concern to me. I prefer how a doll looks, not how it might look with others.

    12. I used to be an SD-only person. But lately I'm drawn towards MSDs and even tinies as well, after receiving my first tiny and seeing how cute and compant they are XD. So I guess that today, I'd buy a doll regardless of its size, as long as I love the mold. I've also found that ordering smaller dolls is a way to satisfy my "hunger" for refreshing my doll collection, at a much lower price.
It also became important for me to own dolls of different sizes, because I started designing clothes, and making clothes for a variety of dolls and sizes gives me an opportunity to practice my skills. I can make more elaborate and detailed pieces for SDs, and simpler pieces from more expensive materials for tinies.

    13. Like s0yuz, I have limited space and also just don't want more dolls than I can carry with me easily, so my limit is 4 dolls - I've decided on 4 MSDs or 3 MSDs and 1 Yo-SD, I may add an SD later on, but I need to see how things go first space-wise, money-wise and what I like most. The first point for me to make any decision on doll is mold, not price or size. So I looked through a bunch of dolls, made a list of all the doll molds I like and wrote their sizes and prices next to them. When I added up my list from most wanted mold to least, it seems mostly MSDs are at the top of my list. So that's what I go with, I could be happy with any size so long as I love the mold, and it turns out the molds I like most are mostly MSDs, followed by Yo-SDs then SDs.

    14. In before the expected Mod Lock!

On topic, I started out really intending to be only into MSD dolls. I hadn't really seen any SD sized ones that I liked. Only when Piffie asked me if I wanted to do a split with her for a Soom Girl body did I start eyeing the SD sized dolls. Other than DoT Shall, which I've wanted from the start. I don't have any SD dolls, and don't intend to really get one until maybe next year.

    15. umm Nope. I go along with the sculpt. If I like the face, I'll buy it. I never took into consideration the size (my house is small and even more my room but that's never been an obstacle!) because the doll's mold is what matters to me. Hence why I have SDs, MSDs and tinies:sweat

    16. i'm in the exact same situation ^^ my very first doll and i had to decide about the size. at first i thought it would be a good idea to start a little smaller. so i browsed various MSD sized dolls and found one i liked .. but since i would like my dolls to reflect my original characters from older stories, MSD is just too small, too childish. Most of my characters are 18 and up so i'm going for SD now. aaand because i always wanted a SDF type 2 body ^^'

    17. Space be danged, I never had any. But I did debate for quite a while before deciding on size basically for financial reasons. While there was a MSD I liked, I realised that I wouldn't be truly satisfied with anything less than an SD. I've always loved big dolls & very tiny ones so the mid size just wasn't for me. And even later when I did buy some MSDs, I sold them all because I just couldn't get into that size.

    18. I have MSD's 3 little monkeys and I'm just in the porcess of getting a SD. I like the MSD for carrying around to doll shows and the SD for taking pic's of . My friends all have SD size dolls. I think its really what you want to do with them. Both are great sizes.

    19. I started with and prefer MSD size. I love my two tinies as well (they're so easy to dress that they're the most spoiled of the group)! I do also love my SD boys, they're awesome, but I find the mini size so much easier for photostories and transporting and just in general.

I intend to (and DO) have a mix of sizes, but my primary most important "core" group are the minis.

I decided this mostly based on the sculpts I like - the first one I chose that I wanted to actually get was a Minifee Shushu. There are VERY few SD girl sculpts that I like at all, but many MSD size ones that I like. Some of the boy sculpts I like have no equivalent in SD size, and some of the ones I love are available (or something very similar is available) in both sizes. There are a couple SD boys I'll get some day, but there were more minis on my wishlist to start with. Add to that the fact that my house is tiny and the differences in price, and here I am with a mostly-mini (mostly SECONDHAND mini, actually) collection.
