How Did You Decide Size?

Apr 9, 2007

    1. as i began by making my first doll... and had never seen a BJD in person i'd printed out my plan to scale for about 40-60cms and found the 60cm huge! and wanted a size i'd be able to sculpt! so i started with slightly small MSD sized. then i planned on buying two SD's.... but got side tracked by soom tinies. and soon will probably be buying a 70cm. atm i only have two Yo-SD and an MSD (and one more MSD in process) so when i get around to ordering the 70cm, he'll be my first big doll O_o
but after the meets i fell in love with the SD scale!

    2. I have never really taken size as a consideration when buying a doll. I buy what I like. I started with a 60cm Obitsu and a 14cm Orientdoll. Now I have nearly every size in between though I lean more toward the 26cm and under crowd. Out of the 20 or so dolls I own half are tinies. However my favorite dolls are my SD boys especially my Shiwoo Alex. Something about the way he feels when I hold him. I know this sounds strange but he is the most "cuddly" of all my dolls. Also he is the easiest to find clothing and shoes for.

    3. I chose MSD first because I thought that their things would be cheaper. That isn't entirely true. But now I also have SD and Tiny sizes, so it didn't really stay that way. I do have primarily MSD though.

    4. While my first BJD will be an SD sized doll because he reminded me so much of a character I adore, I think most of my dolls will be MSD sized--I'm just over 5', so . . . I need dolls that fit my size!

    5. I chose MSDs at first cause they seemed like the perfect size but then I wanted a few SD dolls. But then I thought they were going to be really tall and hard to carry around. I still love MSDs the most and after my first MSD I'm hoping to get a tiny!

    6. How did I decide? Quite simple: Rika is a character from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, and is (physically) ten years old. So getting a 60cm one was out of the question, as those have more of an adult figure. The 42cm ones are far more childish so that ended up being the size I chose for her. Yumeko, however, is a physical representation of the character I've been using in my fanfics for eleven years now. She ages three years in the course of the stories, from sixteen to nineteen. So for her, a 60cm would be more logical.

    7. I didn't decide at all, for my first doll - I had no idea what the sizes meant ("sd? msd? WHAT ARE THESE THINGS?") and being an American that attended public school, I was rather @_@ BWUH? at the sizes being listed in cm (and far too lazy to translate that into inches).. so I didn't pay any attention at all to the doll sizes. I just fell in love with his face.

For my big doll (which I am nowhere near buying yet, but she still counts!), the decision was mostly, rather plainly, "I want her to be as big as possible!". There's also the fact that she's an adult, and like 90% of every face under 65cm is a bit baby-faced. I would have settled having her as a 60cm, but I was lucky enough to find a 70cm head that looks perfect~

    8. An SD is expensive, conspicuous, unwieldy, less portable, and less cute than smaller dolls. Most tinies are too young and too cutesy and it seems like it would be really hard to make their clothes.
That's why I settled on MSD.
I almost wish they were a LITTLE bit smaller though.

    9. I like the SD dolls. It's my kind of size. I never mentioned to buy a MSD, there are more kids to me and I want only grown up dolls.
My dolls are between 2.5 and 3 kilos.

      But there are two exeptions.
A DZ Leo, bought as a friend for Ena's talking rabbit. After his Face up/ blushing I loved him so much. He is really fantastic.
And a DF Lola. I saw her and I wanted her. She is so adorable...

But I think this are the only little one's I want to buy....

    10. Size..I've never liked a special size..any size I like as long as I love the sculpt..

    11. Well... Size wasn't an immediate factor for me when considering my first doll... I had a look at all doll sculpts and just happened to stumble across a JID sculpt I loved along with a few others on the Iplehouse site. When it came to the final decision though, size was a huge factor since I'm ridiculously short and I didn't want my BJD coming up to my waist - which is what the EIDs do for me XDDD

So in the end I opted for a couple of JIDs since they seem a perfect size for my height; without looking too much like children, which is a restriction of the smaller sizes... I want shorter dolls, but I don't necessarily want them to look younger than other taller dolls ^^

    12. I never used to consider it... but now I do! I realised I have verydiffrent fun with dolls of diffrent sizes. I dont often "play" as much with my larger dolls... for me that means jsut... reaching out and picking up a doll to fuss with/pose/fiddle with... I dothat a lot with my tinies and pukis, and MSDs to a much lesser exted. I tend to sew more for my largest size thoght, I find it easier to have complex and pretty outfits for them.

So in general, I just take into account "what I'd liek to do with this doll" when picking a size, or deciding weather I should bring a doll home

    13. I have never considered what sized would be better. I started to be interested in BJD being opened for any mold I would really to fall in love with.

Once I saw ND Bleu Citron I knew it has to be mine :) This doll comes on MSD body, but everyone writes that her head is huge and perfectly matches for SD, so now this is Bleu Citron head on ND SD body.

It seems my doll (what I must to have) decided about size, not me :)

    14. I like big dolls. I saw a 60cm doll in real life, but I think I'm more into the 70cm-80cm dolls. The 60cm size didn't 'scare' me off, so I'm confident that I can deal with a bigger doll.

    15. when I bought my first doll I did want to have a msd size because I didn't know about BJD world and I thought that I will not confortable with large doll : I didn't know why ... just a personnal feeling
Now I have 3 msd dolls and I'm happy with them : I could perfectly imagine to buy yo-sd size ... but not sd size even if some sd dolls are killing me.
I'm not closed to the possibility of buying SD size : but not for the moment

    16. What size did you start with for your first doll?

My girl when I get her will be 43cm, but my goal is to get a 70cm boy.

Do you think smaller is better to start? Or did you start with a big one?

I am just wondering this as my mum asked me the other day what would be better to get first. (My dog doesnt like anything like BJDs, so I have to introduce them slowly I think.)

I think for my first one that will be a good size, and shes just so amazingly cute.

    17. I haven't bought my doll yet, but I think the msd size is what I will be most comfortable with. I think from all the dolls and plush I've ever owned in my life, that's been programed into my brain as "doll size".
Plus larger dolls make me think about this scary "vacuum cozy" my mom almost bought when I was a kid to hide the vacuum since it was stored out in the open in the hallway. Not that bjds look like this creepy, grandma-lady cozy thing, but negative feelings about that size none the less. (Weird, I know.)

    18. The first doll I bought was an MSD, even though I liked some SDs better.
The SDs I liked were (a lot) more expensive and I wasn't sure wether it would work out (with both dolls and the big size). I had never seen or held an SD size doll so I played safe and picked the MSD I liked the most, never regretted, he's adorable.

Later on I fell in love with an SD on a fair (I ordered the week after :p) and now I just ordered my second SD, he will be about 10cm taller than the other one, but I suppose it will go fine :) I love his face and expression :)

So yeh, the looks are more important than the size :p (and I know it sounds wrong, just couldn't find another way of putting it :p)

    19. i prefer SD's in all honesty, but i only brought my MSD because i fell in love with her face XD

    20. I chose a 58cm girl because she's 1/3 scale and that's SO much easier to sew for rather than something MSD or tiny sized! I really like how elegant and tall she is and she just has a presence. The MSD sized dolls tend to look too 'kid' like for my taste.
