How Did You Decide Size?

Apr 9, 2007

    1. My first bjd is a YoSD. I just really liked that doll and since I already have a dal and pullip, the size would be almost the same so they could share clothes. I really like that size, but I also want a lati yellow and an msd. There is one SD that I like, but I think she is just to big for me.

    2. For me it's all been a trial and error process. My first doll, a Soulkid Apple, is MSD. My 2nd was an SD. I learned pretty quickly that I much prefer the bigger SD size, not only because I just like the more realistic and mature looks of them but they're easier for me to handle. I'm not the most patient person and I tend to handle things rougher than I should maybe--I don't hold them by their heads or throw them around, but I know I can be pretty careless when I'm not thinking--and SDs are just easier for me to handle.

Having said that, though, I really enjoy the looks of some Yo-sd and anthros. They're on the opposite spectrum for me and another size that I like. I just tend to save up for and buy SDs I'm much more in love with most of the time. I'm just really not crazy about any MSDs at all, and its really just because of my aesthetic tastes.

    3. I wanted 17 years old boy, when I was searching for the doll. MSD were too young and 70+ were too old for me. So, my boy is 62 sm ^_^

    4. The first BJD I ever held was an SD and it felt too heavy, just too big and I felt like I was going to drop him the whole time. But I knew I wanted a doll family, so I decided to go with Mini size as my biggest and go down from there. ^-^ I have always loved tiny things my whole life.

    5. My first doll was an MSD sized boy. At the moment it´s the only doll I got. The next dolls I planned are MSD too, but I think that I get a bigger Doll in future.^^

    6. Well it was hard for me to actually get my BJD in the first place, my parents didn't think that I should be spending that kind of money on one.. Obviously I thought otherwise..
Really, although I know a lot of people say to find the one you love the most and buy it.. I had to make do with a semi-inexpensive company (well-priced as I put it) and an MSD size.. I didn't want a tiny because they were too small for my taste, but I couldn't go with SD either.. So I had to make do with some limitations but personally I LOVE LOVE LOVE my MSD.. I've never actually handled an SD, seeing as I'm fairly new to the hobby and the only other person in this CITY has only one MSD as well.

So I'd have a better opinion on which I like better if I've had the chance to handle an SD. But for now, I love MSD size!

    7. When I bought my first doll, an IH Ryan, I thought he was gonna be an SD. I hadn't realised how small he actually was...
      I prefer SD's. Around 60, 62cm :3

    8. Well when i first was looking for BJDs i first wanted a SD, but i absolutely fell inlove with the MSD size dollies they seems so much smaller, and petite, in my opinion, easier to handle.
they arent as heavy as the SD size dolls, but i do like some SDs
I'm just scared that i'm gonna drop them, or they are gonna fall >.<
so i will Stay with MSDs.
i may buy a SD in the future.
      ^__^

    9. love all sizes but 60-70 cm dolls are my fav. I can hold them in my arms and carry them around like a little kid.

    10. Really easyly since I bought my first. I got amazed, fascinated, by her sculpt, but also loved the size she was expected to be, in this case the size she truly is. It was a CP Luts Delf Soo Special and since I knew the character she was going to be I did not hesitate the rest would be that same. When she arrived I only got more convinced of this. Yikes. I only fell for a couple of Mini Fée that I also have and that I love too. Even so, my best favorite resin size is large for my BJD and I take every of them, my large and not that large ones, following my personal view of all them as in 1/3 scale.

    11. The first doll that really caught my eye was an MSD. That's probably my favorite size - SD's just look a little mature for my tastes. So anything MSD or smaller for me, I'd say. ^^

    12. I was similar in thinking that all my dolls would be the same size, but then I decided to get different sizes to go with different ages/heights of my characters. ^^

    13. For me, SD is kind of out of the question. I don't have the storage space.
But, having said that, I like MSDs not just cause I have the space but because I feel they're more doll-like because they're a bit smaller. Also they're lighter and I just generally find them easier to manage.

    14. I've had Sds, minis, tinies, an even a 70cm, and I have to say that while I like them all, I like the majority of my collection to be around 60cm. I still have minies, and may even get another tiny or 70cm, but I like the 60cm-65cm the best.

    15. When I first got into the hobby, I was mostly attracted to SDs. However, at that time I didn't know their size, I just stared at their faces. Then one time I scrolled down and realized how big they were and I immediately stopped looking at them. I thought that 60-70cm would be too much for me to handle. I decided that I'd get an MSD but I finding the perfect doll in that size proved to be impossible. After a few weeks, I gave up and took out some measuring tape to see how big an SD would really be. I realized that a 60cm doll would be about the size of my poodle (standing on her hind legs). Suddenly it didn't seem so huge and I decided to go for it.

A year has passed since I got my first doll and I've found that SD is the perfect size for me. Sometimes I get frustrated with some bigger bodies because they're a little harder to handle than smaller dolls, but I still love them. MSD's are very handy, but the faces are to small and immature for my taste.

    16. SD sizes for me are too big. It's hard to hall around when they're heavy. ^^' In addition, the pretty clothing like lolita dresses tend to cost $100 or upward like Dollheart. I know they're pretty and worth the money to people out there but I can't afford spending $100 on multiple doll dresses. I like MSD but I haven't encountered the right volks msd for me and pretty clothing are hard to come by like SD sizes. Right now, I'm sticking with YoSD's. Just the right size.

    17. I don't think I really decided, it was just which doll I liked the best- it happened to be MSD <3 They're an awesome size- not too big, not too small.
However from a distance I have seen SD sizes, and recently got a YoSD...

I think I love all sizes as dolls on my wishlist are of every size :XD:

    18. I am currently planning for my very first bjd purchase and having a really terrible time deciding. (No, seriously. I made SPREADSHEETS and LISTS of pros and cons and prices and pictures and my boss LAUGHED at me.) I'm planning on something less expensive, almost certainly a BBB or resinsoul (although there's a couple of others I like in each size range) and I've ruled out the SDs- too hard to transport and frankly, I don't know where the heck I'd display them) and I'm pretty sure I *don't* want the fashion-doll sized ones. I'm mostly interested in the MSDs and the 1/6ish tinies. So, some questions for owners of either or both! It seems from reading that most people seem to fall in love with an individual doll sculp regardless of size and then go from there, but for me from a shopping perspective, it would help to be able to narrow it down to one size.

      1. How do you store your dolls? My off topic collection are mostly vacuum sealed and stored in a climate controlled closet because they're all 60+ years old- the 'modern' ones (mostly around 20 years :D) are all cloth and are on a shelf out of the sun. I'm worried about where the heck I'd put a 45cm doll- do the joints get weird if you keep them posed, do they need to be standing?

      2. What finally made you choose one size? Was it falling in love with a certain sculpt? Did money play a role? What was the most important factor?

      3. Was there anything that you wished you'd considered (or been told about) before you picked your doll that you learned afterwards? (For example, in a thread on the MSD board, someone mentioned that it was hard to find shirts in some styles for her boy's size, that most of the artists in that style seemed to focus on the SD market.)

      Thanks for any help! :chocoberry

    19. It seems you already noticed how things usually work for "firsts". There's a reason for that: a doll that you fall in love with makes you not care what size it is, or really, not care about most of the other qualities it has--size, material, company, price (to a point), etc. And if there's anything BJD owners can probably agree on, it's that you should buy dolls that you like, regardless of other factors.

      1. How do you store your dolls?

I can only speak for myself, but my girls are almost never standing, but sitting. If you plan to store them standing, I would suggest using a stand--most dolls shouldn't trusted to stand by themselves for long periods of time. The joints shouldn't "get weird" regardless of the pose you use, unless you're exerting so much force that limbs can warp or break. The worse the joints get is dirty in the exposed areas, nothing a moist rag or magic eraser couldn't fix.

      2. What finally made you choose one size? Was it falling in love with a certain sculpt? Did money play a role? What was the most important factor?

Love of the doll is most important, no question. From there, your first doll will "teach" you what qualities you prefer, just by playing with it. Having the first doll be extremely loved helps because they probably won't fit your eventual vision of an "ideal doll", but you will likely put up with them anyway.

      3. Was there anything that you wished you'd considered (or been told about) before you picked your doll that you learned afterwards?

My first was a Dollfie Dream (vinyl doll). I was told they stain easily, but I honestly don't think any amount of warning would have gotten through to me about how dreadfully easy they stain.

For something more relevant to you, my first resin doll was a Volks MSD. I wished I realized how limited the elbow range was--Volks dolls lack double jointed elbows so they can't touch their own face without a mod of some sort. (As trivia, Dollfie Dreams actually do have an extra elbow joint that lets them do that.)

However, I believe that even if I was properly warned, I would still have bought the dolls anyway. Because I love them.

EDIT: I do actually make spreadsheets of the kind you describe, but for things like electronics, computers and photo gear. To me, a doll's "function" is to be pretty, so that's not really something I could usefully grade on a spreadsheet.

    20. I will be of no help, as I have a wide variety of wanted dolls of all different sizes.

But I just wanted to let you know that I have made a spreadsheet for each doll of interest, plus additional ones related to saving, accesories and longterm spending. Plus word documents filled with pictures. You are not alone!
