How Did You Decide Size?

Apr 9, 2007

    1. Just taken a new approach to my latest doll. I went with ~15cm as I want to make her into a 1/1 scale Shugo Chara character.

    2. My first doll is 60cm and I don't like the look of lots of different heighted dolls near one another, so... I guess buying my first doll decided size for me!

    3. I have been debating on size for my first doll for about a month now. Being used to "normal" dolls, a 60cm doll is hard to imagine. However, it just seems like there are more clothing options, pattens, wigs, etc. aimed at 60cm dolls than any other size. So, I picked based on marketplace availability.

(Plus, I thought it would be fun to own a big doll!)

    4. My first doll was an SD because I was in the bigger is awesomer state of mind, but when I got my MSD, I realized a lot of advantages to owning smaller dolls. One, you can remove the head without pliers and two other people; two, they are easier to carry; and three, they're adorable.

    5. I went on a bit of a scientific research thing for this one. I decided that after seeing various doll heights in person over several months, I got the basic size and a good comparison of each size against other objects like a tv stand or desk; MSD for a girl that is between 4'10" and 5' is the best choice for her. Plus, it's the best size to handle. My current doll (she's a homemade plastic, wire, and fabric doll so she's really OT here) is almost 17', so a MSD size doll to replace her is good.
For my boy, he's gonna have to be anywhere between 60cm-near 78cm since the character is between 6'0" and 7'5". He will be replacing the male doll I made too. Ironically, I like the height difference in real life too because my ex was 6'6" and I'm like a MNF against him.

    6. Personally it wasn't about 'deciding' a size to stick to. When I was looking through the doll sites to find a doll that I actually wanted, the only thing I focused on was their sculpts. It wasn't until after I found the doll that I wanted that I even bothered to look at his size. xD (And leave it to me to find a 66cm doll)
But I also know that I'd love a few MSD sized dolls, simply because I know I wouldn't want to carry an SD with me everywhere (Though I know I'm going to end up doing it anyway.)

    7. I'm attracted to 1/6th scale and smaller because I have a thing for dollhouses @___@;
Plus the tinies have so many cute hiding places!

When I get my pukifee I want to see if I can find a cute carrying case to wag him around in.
I was thinking of a lantern from Michael's.

    8. i can nearly guarantee that i've already posted in this thread but i pretty sure i've changed my mind, so here goes~~~

i really haven't decided XD currently i have owned MSD's, tinies, and one SD girl on the smaller size....AND i can't decide which one i like best. i like the boy dolls the best and am attracted to the larger sculpts 65cm plus but most of the time price pulls me back...that and my fiancee's nagging that i won't like a big doll....i've considered testing his and my theory but will have to wait until some MSD's can leave and my birthday...until then who know's what size is best for me ^^

    9. my first two BJDs were MSDs and i think they are the perfect size!! i now have a 60-cm and I love him so much and he is so great and his size is perfect but he is to big to carry around!! My preferance is probably the 60cm though! But I think that MSDs are better for begginers!! They are a lot easier to care for!

    10. I haven't |3 Well, not really. I like all doll sizes (Though I haven't had the pleasure of meeting something taller than 60cm or smaller than 25cm >w>), so I don't really have to be picky about it. But I do have my dolls separated in groups, and that's when I have to sit down and think 'Could I have an SD with these guys? Or should they all stay around MSD size?'
But I welcome all sizes in my home X3 As long as I'm not overrun by an SD army @___@)"

    11. I just like friends2bmade dolls, also barbie, but that's not special I think.

    12. For me it was a compromise with design and cost. Being a uni student, even with my parents' support, isn't exactly easy on the bank account so I obviously couldn't afford some of the more expensive BJD brands. I found MSD's to be the best; they suited my particular tastes and most of the brands and accessories didn't break my bank. I've now got an AOD Wang Zi on order and working to get myself a Ringkid Dylan as a special treat if I end up passing the bridging course (which I will). ;)

    13. Well, a while ago I found this really nice 5 foot tall (I'm like 4 inches taller than it LOL) barbie doll house for super cheap. I decided to remodel it for fun even though I didn't really have any barbies to put in it, I just liked the project itself. Even though some of its not finished, I decided I really wanted a doll for it but I never liked barbies. So that's how I got my first doll: a 27cm ^^;

    14. Pretty much the same with me. While I like the size and often the more teenage/adult style of some of the larger dolls, 58-65 cm or so, my budget is a bit too limited for that at the moment. So I found a 45 cm one, that still doesn't look tooo much like a child, fit my aestethic taste and was within my budget. One problem I see though is that a lot of the clothes might not fit her, with a somewhat larger chest than many dolls that size, but maybe I can sew some clothes for her myself if I get into too much troubles ^^

    15. I have found that I like the younger looking dolls, mostly Kid Delf's and ones of that size. The first doll I got to actually carry around and play with was one lady's at Jacon in 2008. I babysat her little Delf boy that I can't remember the model of off the top of my head, but I have seen his picture around here before. Anyway, lugging him around the dealers room was hard enough, so I knew if I got a SD there was NO way I was lugging it around and that made me sad. When I went to find the doll I wanted I found that the grown up faces don't really appeal to me, so I kinda saved myself in that retrospect. XD I have a character I might need to get a SD for, but we will see. I would like a Tiny, but I have found that I just really like MSD size. Although, I have to admit, I would like to have an SD just to cuddle with. Madison is just a little small. xD And to creep out my husband with. XDD

    16. Well, I wanted a doll who is a bit taller than my other non-resin dolls that´s why my first was msd-size.
I think it was the right size for me then. Nowdays owning two tinies and one 25cm doll I have come to the conclusion that tiny size isn´t bad either..very easy to carry around. So, maybe those two sizes msd and tiny-size are my favourites. :>

    17. I like big. Always have.
Easier to paint (shaky hands), easier to find suitable fabric, Easier to add a thousand details to the clothes when they're bigger too. :p

Oh, and I'm good at forgetting/misplacing things --> Bigger dolls are more difficult to lose or forget somewhere. ^^
I also love to FEEL the weight of the doll on my arms when I carry them.

    18. I'm an "MSD and smaller" person. For a number of reasons.
First, I like more MSD face sculpts than SD face sculpts.
Second, MSD seems like, in my opinion, a far better size. Not too little, not too huge.
Third, I think it's a little easier to hybrid and find clothes for MSDs. SD body sizes proportions seem to vary so much.
Fourth, while I don't decide on a doll by its price (If I found a doll I truly loved, I'd try to get it no matter the size or price) MSDs fit into my budget far better.
Tinies also fall under these circumstances, but there aren't as many tiny face molds I like as there are minis.
I'm also a little afraid of the bigger dolls. They intimidate me.
My "Dolls I have realistic plans for" list is mostly MSDs, with a couple tinies, and only one SD. It's funny, the only SD is my "One true dream doll that I WILL have some day." We're a very tragic love story, that doll and I.
But in the end, I choose my dolls by their faces far more than any other factor, and I seem to like MSD face molds the most. I will admit, it's hard to find props and patterns for MSDs, or get them to fit in with full scale settings.

    19. I really didn't- I went for what I could afford with my first doll, and sort of just picked out whatever I liked with the rest of them. I only have two rules about size: No smaller than 30cm, and no taller than 70cm. So long as my dolls stay in that range, I don't mind what size they are. I rather like to have their 'heights' vary from doll to doll, it looks more natural in group photos. And I recently discovered that I think Lati's Green Line is positively adorable- so, I who said I hated Tinies, am now determined to get a 30cm doll. (But no smaller- 30cm is about a foot tall, and that's more then small enough, before I feel like I'm playing with barbies again or something =_=).

    20. I want MSDs as my dolls who are adults, and tinies as children. I also want a few SDs as giants, just because I like them being so big! Heehe. SO I totaly didn't help at all then....
