How Did You Decide Size?

Apr 9, 2007

    1. I like msd's and the larger ones but im a little nervous about going smaller.

    2. I actually go by the molds I like... To me it doesn't matter if they're tall or small. I originally thought I'd want to get an SD sized one but then I changed my mind when I saw DOC U. I just had to get that face.

    3. I like the SD/SD13 size, but I also enjoy MSDs and I just fell in love with a YO. So... I'm not really picky on size, though SDs will always be my favourite. I think it just depends on what age of character I'm going for.

    4. i decide on the face then the size then i look into my bank..

    5. when i was looking for my first doll i definitly didn't want a 60 cm doll.. i don't know why but they seemed just too big.. first i wanted a msd but i didn't find the right one so i bought a mini-gem.. when she arrived i was surprised how smart she was ^^ยฐยฐ
the size didn't really matter by my second doll - i just looked for a beautiful doll which looking i really love and so i found my 60 cm doll ^^
now i'm really into 60 cm doll but i can't really explain why

    6. I'm pretty short, so 60cm seemed huge to me. I wanted a mini or a yo size, and liked BC Gun and a few minis. When BC released Elf gun, I had to have him! :squee: I really like the size, they sit right in my hand, fit some barbie clothes and are so cute!

    7. For me, I always wished for a larger doll even when I was little. 60cm dolls are pretty much the exact thing I would have wanted as a kid, so naturally I'm still pretty drawn to them.

I'll have to wait until my girl turns up to know whether or not SD really is right for me, but I'm pretty sure it is. I like the idea of the weight and size of them.

At the end of it though it's really about the sculpt that appeals to me most, and so far they've been pretty uniformally SD size. Although some of the DOC really catch my eye...

    8. If SDs weren't about twice as much money, I'd have SDs instead of MSDs probably. I went with minis first but then started getting some tinies because they were neat, didn't take much space, and had some easy clothing options.

    9. Whatever tickles my fancy. The first BJD I bought was an MSD, simply because it fit the character best. Even though the doll isn't mine, it made me realize that, contrary to my belief, I was able to open my heart for some MSD molds - not solely SD. I do, however, stay away from dolls within the same size range as Barbie, and the teensy little ones. Knowing me, I'd probably lose a Yo-SD, and I wouldn't want to pay so much for something so small, anyway.

Plus, they're way too childlike for my tastes. It's bad enough to have brats in flesh and blood, but making pint-sized models of the little horrors? Not for me.

Anything taller than 60 cm is also too big. I *may* go 70, IF the character demands it. :)

    10. I was lucky to have friends with BJDs. From spending time with each of their dolls, I know I am most taken with the 60(ish)cm sized dolls. Though the smaller ones are quite charming as well...

    11. So there have been a few dolls jumping out at me, wanting to be (or already are) two of the characters in my head and all of them are very good choices.

I'd really like to stick to MSDs but the problem is that the ones I want the most (for these two characters) are SD as the two MSDs I've picked out look younger than I'd like but I love their molds. I've handled SDs before and I find they are bit awkward (for me anyway) so I prefer the MSDs. Not to mention, price *_* :o

Aside from the money factor, what are pros and cons of SDs and MSDs? Are SDs more poseable due to their size? Or harder because they weigh more? Etc Etc..

Sorry if something like this has been done already. I used the search tool, I really did!

    12. For me :

      MSD
Pro - size and weight, and price
Cons - Not as mature face sculpts

      SD
Pro - just the head and body sculpt
Cons - too large and heavy and expensive for practicality

If I find a light and cheap body that matches the head that I like, tho, I might cave in for an SD.

But for now, Dolkot rocks cos Day = Mini Kiss

And about posability, I have never personally posed SDs before, only held them, but I think they might be steadier due to the weight (the weight holds them down more like an anchor), or they less steady due to the size (their gravitational center is much higher above the ground compared to minis)

    13. My take is that both have their advantages and disadvantages..

      MSD -

      Pro -- takes up less room, easier to find clothes for, clothes are often cheaper {Teen trend, Friends2bmade etc}. there are childlike and mature looking MSDs {Narae, MNFs, Bobobie, are mature looking}
I find they pose alot better than SD.

Con- shoes are sometimes harder to find, since MSD's come in different sizes..I have a hard time finding shoes that look good on my Narae. other than that not much for me. not as interchangeable as far as head and body from different companies.

      SD-

Pro- more of a presence, nice weight, easier to sew for. lots of clothes and shoes for them, though a bit pricey at times

Con- takes up more room, most often harder to pose depending on company, {CP is the worst and Soom is the best in my opinion}, heavier to lug around.

    14. Whats MNF stand for?

and I checked out Bobobie but the only molds I like of those are the SD size ones lol

    15. MNF is Mini Fee, the MSD size CP dolls with mature bodies^^

    16. thanks, thats what I thought well its not so much the bodies, its the faces I want to be a little more grown up.. tho not too, the girl is 17/18 and the guy well his age is unknown lol

I wanted to get a Soul Doll Yewon for Aria but my friend told me she looks like shes 12 lol.. I don't think so : ( Guys are harder to find too cuz a lot of the MSDs look so girly and young hehe

    17. Hmm I have both and these seem to be the pros and cons I noticed, but I'm probably missing a few...

      MSD
Pros: Lighter, Take up less room, Cheaper dolls, Cheaper clothes, Easier to stand.
Cons: Outfits are less varied than SDs, eyesizes tend to be more tricky, there are less "tender/sleeping" version sculpts.

      SD
Pros: Easier to position eyes (for me anyway), More detailed faceups and nails if desired, More clothes styles and accesories, more unusual wig styles and colours, easier to find eyes (without wondering if 14mm or 16mm will look better), Easier to find chairs and other props.
Cons: Heavy, difficult to pack, Not so reliable to stand alone, Take up alot more room, more expensive outfits and dolls.

    18. I, personally, find SD dolls a much more 'comfortable' size to hold and carry around - the minis are just bit too small to hug ^.^

SDs are easier to make clothes and things for, easier to shop for (Bigger range of wigs, clothes, and especially shoes, depending on where you look) and I find them easier to paint and mod.

MSDs are trickier to dress well, but sometimes have a wider selection in eyes - plus a lot of the newer companies only do mini and smaller, so you've also got a wider range of face sculpts to choose from.

    19. Strangely enough I like SD for the boys, and MSD for the girls!
For the sheer pleasure of sewing though it's SD, you can make much more detailed outfits for them because they are bigger.

    20. Ive had an sd and i have a msd rite now.

I think i prefer the size of the SD. There much more to hold and hug xD and snuggle with lol.

same with the sewing.. bigger stuff was easier for me.

but msd are easier to carry. though they still hurt my arm after a while lol.
