How Did You Decide Size?

Jun 23, 2011

    1. I went with the doll that caught my attention the most, which happened to be the biggest doll made at the time (if I remember correctly) which is the Dollmore Lusion Doll. I was going to set my goal for a smaller doll next, due to affordability, but then Dollmore sent me an email announcing their Trinity Doll, which is even bigger than the Lusion (by about 26cm) so then my focus re-shifted. Depending on how my finances go though, I'll either save up for the Trinity or save up for a smaller doll. But because of my daughter I wouldn't go much smaller than 24cm so she doesn't lose the doll or potentially break it.

    2. I loved SDs right off the bat. However, my first two were a PP and PKF, because I had seen a lot of people in the community say they had bought an SD sculpt they loved, but then had to get rid of it because the doll was too big. I didn't think I would feel the same, but I wanted to make sure the doll hobby was really something I wanted to do before I went and spent the money on an SD. I saw some SDs at my first doll meet last summer and was so envious. They were gorgeous.

I got my first 70cm this past January and he is my baby. My friends make fun of me because I carry him like a toddler and let him ride around on my shoulders. XD Pretty much every doll on my wish list now is an SD. I just don't really like the smaller dolls, though I do make exceptions for sculpts I really love.

    3. When I just started I thought about the MSD doll size. I still agree, that this is a very suitable size. Not really big, not too small. But then I wanted a doll with a more mature look and btw was just curious how much fun an SD doll could be. So I got 65 cm SWITCH doll which is in fact as much fun as MSD. I agree, that probably after a while one looks not for the particular size but the look. All dolls are lots of fun and it would be a pity to refuse getting a doll just because it's too large or too small.

    4. My first doll was bought for me by my husband, she's a minifee shushu and I love her and felt the size was right for me so I decided to carry on getting MSD sized dolls (also means my dolls can share wigs & clothes). I do want to get at least 2 SD sized dolls (one of each gender) and maybe a few yo-sd (or smaller) sizes but I think MSD will be my main size.

    5. My first bjd was an MSD, which I wasn't too fond of (my mom bought it; but I wanted an SD). Several years later, I bought myself an SD, and found out I love the size. I also bought a 70cm, and found out they're even cooler, so I tend to prefer the SDs and 70cms for my doll family (they seem more lifelike to me, and more like companions). That being said, with over 20 SD and 70cm sized dolls, I'm running out of room..so I've had to choose a few MSDs and YoSds recently haha

    6. I am really close to possibly getting my first doll finally but im still so in the middle. I dont know if i want a MSD or a SD ? I love that MSD is smaller and easier to carry around due to size but i have always loved SD and how big and much easier it is to make clothes. What ones do you find are a better size ? I know its very based on the person but i would really love some opinions. :aangel:

    7. I have a minifee and think she amazing and a lot of fun. But I've also held a friend's SD and like that size also. I'm thinking of getting one. I think SD is probably harder to handle overall. But if you like to sew, it's a great size.

    8. I'm pretty partial to SD. Yeah, they're heavier, but I don't feel like that's a bad thing. In fact, I prefer it... Though I couldn't tell you why. I have one MSD and I don't really take her out as much.

    9. Haha thanks ! i really want to start sewing doll clothes so i think SD would definitely make it easier especially seeing that im a beginner at it.

    10. I own 16 dolls. They're all in the SD range except for three--one is 73cm, one is 38cm and one is 26cm.

Overall, I prefer SD. They're not hard to handle, there are more clothing options, more sculpt diversity and body types, and IMO easier to paint and sew for.

All that being said, my minifee is really awesome and fun to shop for!

    11. I have three SD and two MSD(ones a centaur however) and I greatly prefer SD. Also yeah it's a lot easier to sew for SD at least in my opinion. :thumbup

    12. I currently have 37 dolls. They range in size from about 10 cm to about 60 cm, with the majority in either the MSD or Yo-SD range. Each size has its own pros and cons. Some are more portable than others, some are easier to pose or shop for, some are easier to sew for, some are easier to find accessories for. I haven't yet had a chance to do any sewing for the SDs, but I have found sewing in the MSD rather straightforward; it takes a bit of practice, but as I work at it I've been getting nicer and nicer results.

I will admit, it's the MSDs that go out with me the most, particularly the pair in my icon, as they're portable yet still nicely detailed. The Yo-SDs are the next most likely to go out with me, and the SDs go out rarely due to size and the fact that they belong in a pair, so it's tough to take only one or the other anywhere.

    13. ...why not both? :thumbup

If you're going for child-like you'll have an easier time finding MSD sized sculpts, clothes, accessories, etc...if you're going for adult-like then it's easier to find that style for SD. I have 2 70cm range dolls, 5 SD sized dolls, 2 MSD sized dolls, and 1 YoSD sized doll and I think MSD is in a good place of being convenient (carrying and such) as well as substantial.

    14. I own seven dolls and the majority of them are SD sized. I tend to play with them more. I like the weight and they're definitely easier to paint.

I actually find that smaller dolls are easier to sew for because I do everything by hand.

MSD and smaller are pretty easy to carry around but I like taking my bigger dolls with me because they're easier for me to photograph.

    15. I like both !
I currently own one SD and two MSD, and I'm planning to buy another SD during the year. I like the weight and presence of SD, but I rather play with MSD, it's a much funnier size in my opinion, and I'm the most comfortable with them.

    16. Why not both!? :whee: I only have MSD and YoSD right now, but one of the next dolls I want to get is 65cm. I want to have a variety~
I guess I think MSD is a better size for a first doll, though. I definitely wasn't ready for a gigantic SD when I first got into the hobby, nor was I ready to spend that much money. MSD was a good starter size for me, and now that I know how much I love this hobby, I'm ready to go for a big doll.

    17. I have 5 SDs and one 30cm tiny. I think my daughter's MSDS are awesome, but I just can't do the MSD size for myself for some reason. I tried to have one--- I got a Unoa faceplate because I love the sculpt--- but the size was so not for me that I couldn't get inspired to put a whole doll together. I gave the faceplate to my daughter; it will have a much better home in her collection. SDS are what I started with and what I'm going to stick with. I really just prefer them. There are good things about all the sizes; I think some people just click with a certain size. My best advice is that if you have any access to doll-owning friends or a doll meet, you should ask to hold an MSD and an SD to see how they feel to you. If you don't have access to that, I'd probably just choose based on what head sculpt you love the most... and whatever size that head is, get that size. If you do decide to go MSD, I can tell you that it's just as possible to sew really nice, detailed clothing for MSD as it is SD. I sew for my dolls and my daughter's dolls, so I have done both.

    18. It really depends on personal choices and lifestyle, and the excuses for loving or not loving either one are not based on the dolls themselves, but depends on us, again :)

For instance, I didn't get any BJDs for years although I wanted to for several reasons, but the main reason I kept repeating was that "SD is too large for me to handle". But the truth is that we move frequently and there is simply no way I could store and keep an army of SD dolls during these moves (I do have an army of small off-topic dolls and even this turns out to be a nightmare every time we move). If this wasn't the case, I wouldn't be so scared of SD size.

Now my first BJDs are going to be MSDs. But it's not only because I'm not able to have an SD and try to make do with MSD. On the contrary, I like MSD a lot more, because they feel more like "dolls" to me. Carrying them around depends on the owner too: I hardly carry my 1/6 scale dolls with me and I don't think I'll do that with an MSD. So this doesn't look like it could be the main motive to get one.

In the end, it depends on what kind of feeling you are after. I think you should get the doll that inspires you the most. The size should come after that ;)

    19. Well I love my msd size, cause of the reasons you mentioned (easily transported and hold and stuff) but I also like them due to my space restrictions. I mean I love SDs but I just can't fit them in my room, so MSDs are my go to size.
But you go with what you feel is best. If you like the move ability of MSDs go with those, but if you like the customisation and clothes choices of an SD go for it.

    20. I find that the majority of aesthetics that appeal to me are almost always in MSD. But the size of SDs are what got me really interested in bjds in the first place. The idea of a 58cm tall doll tickles my fancy and is what I really want to have, even if an MSD suits what I like visually.
