How Did You Decide Size?

Jun 23, 2011

    1. It's totally personal preference! OP, have you tried out both?

I personally like MSD better because I don't have much space to store dolls and sewing clothes isn't too hard either. She's also easier to take pictures of! ^^

But SD is more cuddly :3

    2. I agree with aquabliss that MSDs feel more like "dolls" .So it depends what you are looking for in a doll. For me personally MSD is just the right size, but I can't deny that I'm warming up to the thought of having SD one day :celebrate Sorry, not very helpful :(

    3. I knew from the beginning that I liked the aesthetic of SDs better than other sizes and was immediately drawn to them over the other sizes. I have 18 SDs home (and one on the way). I tried a tiny, and while the posing was good I just didn't fall in love with it as much as my SDs. I don't take them out very much, but I honestly don't mind it when I do. I mainly photograph mine, and enjoy taking a few out when I'm home. I also use them for drawing references and write stories about them :)

    4. Maybe MSD-sized could be little bit easier for the first doll, but ofcourse SDs are not that bad too. :) And it depends on their bodytypes. For example Minifees are very good for beginners.

    5. I first got an MSD due to them being slightly less expensive and also taking up less space and their portability. My second doll was an SD, and I fell in love. As much as I love MSDs and their fantastic attributes, SDs have more presence and are more fun to have around I think.

    6. I think this is something we all have to decide for ourselves, ultimately. There was a time when Minifee started to take over my doll family because I enjoyed how many I could pack into a bag to show off for meetups, and I thought I was going to have to size down all of my 60cm+ dolls to match... and then I did a complete about face and all of those Minis "grew up" into big dolls. In the end I just like the heft and the presence of the big size better, and I wanted everyone to be in scale. If you're wanting something in between, there are quite a few bigger dolls in the 55-60cm range that are still pretty lightweight and portable. Volks SDs are adorably petite themselves and are such a great standard clothing size.

    7. It was never much of a question for me. I have always been a "big doll" person, and when I first got into BJDs, most MSDs were very child-like, which was not at all what I wanted. I've never once regretted my decision to get SDs. I have some MSDs and tinies, and they never get as much attention as the SDs. I prefer sewing for the bigger dolls, but they do require more fabric for their outfits.

    8. I have had both and I prefer my MSDs. I guess I just cant handle that much doll and living in a small apartment doesn't help. MSDs are easy to sew for and they transport better and I personally think they pose better but then again I have never owned a feeple so I can't really compare other SDs with my minifees. I would love to try SDs out again sometime because I do love some of the sculpts but since my group is primarily MSD....I think they would just be an odd duck, haha.

    9. I started with the thought that SD would be really big and so I bought a MSD as my first doll.
A year later I bought my biggest boy who is 52 cm and he is sooo big, I think he is my limit
I don't have the space nor the money or the strength to have SD at home or carry them around. Although I really love some SD sculpts so... maybe if someday I win the lottery or something like that... maybe.

    10. I like MSDs better, myself! They're much easier for me to deal with and they take up less space. Unfortunately, all of my MSDs are kids so for the adults I needed a few SDs. Be honest, though, I've got 2 SDs and they're mostly just display pieces. Not that I mess with the littler ones much but I haven't touched my gorgeous Iplehouse Rexy except to dust her off since she's been completed. I feel awful. XD;

    11. I have all sorts of sizes, though if I'm taking a doll with me somewhere it's usually one of my Kid Delfs... or one of my smaller OT dolls. That's mainly due to not having a carrier for any of my bigger dolls right now, but also because it's easier to have one of the smaller ones sitting on my desk at work, or bumming around the fabric store with me.

    12. I have one SD, one MSD, and two SDs on layaway but not here yet. I loooove the SD size it's my favorite, though my MSD girl is my tiny cutie! The SD size is what drew me to the hobby, so unique to have such big detailed dolls! I've held other people's smaller dolls, around the 25cm range and that's way too small for me, that's tiny! So don't get me started on actual tinies that are 12cm ahah :sweat

One of my biggest things too is I don't like dolls that look like children, those are the ones that get me creeped out. I can find other people's kid-like dolls cute sometimes but I really don't want one for myself. My MSD is a Model Delf girl from Luts, so she's a mature MSD. She's very portable as she has double jointed knees, so it's easy to fold her up and put her in one of my purses. But lately I've been considering reshelling her into a small SD, around 50cm. One of my incoming dolls is a Feeple60 Moe line girl, 54cm, so having her in person might let me find out what I really want.

So like many other people it's all a matter of personal taste! I have considered a couple mature YOSDs because they're mature, but the want doesn't stick around long. I have little problem taking an SD around with me, I'll strap them into the seatbelt of my car if it's me driving myself somewhere, and throw a small blanket over them to protect them from sun exposure.

As for sewing I make clothes for my MSD just fine! And she's on the slimmer size of MSDs so if you're looking at the chunkier bodied MSDs I don't think sewing for them will be much harder than sewing for an SD.

    13. For me, I started out with a MSD. I don't really think when I purchased my first doll, that I really accounted for the size, I just thought the sculpt was so cute, and that's what sold me. Once I got my first SD sized doll, I was certainly surprised at how much bigger he was than my little MSD sized girl. Now I seem to only be going for SD sized dolls. I guess they're just the perfect size for holding onto, and ease of finding clothes, and making them too. I just find the larger dolls easier to handle, I suppose.

    14. Heres something that might help. What are you gonna use the doll for? If its photography, SD allows more detail(and of course face ups and clothing is easier). If youre gonna take it everywhere, a smaller size might be better

    15. I prefer SD, but I know a lot of beginners are fond of MSD because they are a more manageable size.

    16. I love the size of MSDs but I also see the appeal of SDs. The biggest problem I've run into with MSDs is that it seems to be much harder to find really nice, realistic looking shoes. From what I've seen, MSD shoes tend to look less realistic, I think because it's harder to fit a lot of detail into a smaller shoe. But, at the same time, I wouldn't trade my MSD for an SD. I really like how snugly she fits into my room. If you can't decide between the two sizes, I'd recommend just going for the sculpt that you like the best and not worrying too much about the size itself.

    17. For me personally, msd sized dolls are the perfect size ! I thought my doll would be smaller, i knew she was gonna be like 18 inches tall, but even to this day she seems so much bigger than i expected :) it just depends on what you are comfortable with, its extremely easy to find clothes for msd dolls especially on etsy! But its also easy to do that for SD sized dolls too :) everybody has a preference ! Good luck on finding a doll

    18. I like SDs! I like big dolls, I guess. MSDs are pretty nice, but YoSDs are pretty much generally out of the question. Too small, too frail; and I don't usually care for childlike or teeny dolls unless it's involved with a specific story I'm working on.

    19. I love the SD size. I went back and forth as to whether or not I would enjoy the MSD size since it is kind of awkwardly sized between the SD and the Yo. However, I love the size now. I wouldn't say it is my favorite - that is tied between Yo and SD, but I enjoy my minis.
