How Did You Decide Size?

Jun 23, 2011

    1. my first doll was an MSD from luts. i loved her at first but then i realized i had no idea what to do with her. she was small and youthful looking and i had no child characters, so i ultimately could not bond or connect with her. all of my characters were adults. i kind of realized i wanted my dolls to reflect my characters. the next doll i bought was a souldoll double l-heart to be my character yurij and i fell in love with him immediately when i opened him up. so i sold my MSD girl and have been buying SDs ever since. i also love the size and heft of SDs and the fact that they really do look like 1/3 scaled adults c: all in all i think i chalk my preference up to my characters and the way i see my characters in my head. i also generally tend to enjoy SD sculpts more and when i look at my crew they are all the same scale and look like they're a group of friends. i know i would never buy another MSD (i think i perhaps can't connect to child characters), but i would someday like a YOSD to be the toddler of one of my characters :~)

    2. The very best way to get a good feel for the different scales available (and how they compare to each other-) is to see them "in person". So, I'd suggest that anyone new check out the Meets forum and see if there's an upcoming gathering anywhere within a reasonable distance. If there is one, just go and have a look. Most owners are fine with new people showing up and asking questions. ^_^

Personally, I had a friend who started collecting these dolls many years before I did, so I had an unfair advantage. I knew from handling Mino's dolls that I liked 1/3-scale better than their smaller cousins.

    3. Oh gosh, I am terrible with sizes.
I started with a Lati yellow, and that was the biggest I would ever go..... Then a Lati green..... A Minifee... And I've had three SD girls!
I always feel like the tiniest are my favourite because they're easy to take about but I keep coming back to SD size dolls over and over, there are more SD size dolls I like than any other size but I always find it hard storing them.
I hope my latest SD girl will stick around.
I love reading stories like this so thanks for starting this post and congratulations on your Msd!

    4. I fall in love with dolls, no matter the size :) Even if MSD is my favourite size, I'm comfortable with about every sizes and like them all for different reason. So I never restrain myself to only one or two sizes, I just buy the sculpts I like !

    5. For me it's any size under 70cm, but that's due to my own height.

    6. I chose the size before I started looking for the perfect sculpt (which had to half elf ears) I think I'm intimidated by the sheer size of SD's.

    7. I liked the wide variety of mature aesthetic that the SD size offers, and with my collectibles I've always been drawn to the larger models. The idea of a two foot tall doll really appealed to me, and they definitely have a presence when they are sitting out :)

    8. I'm definitely biased towards SDs, and they comprise most of my crew. I tend to go for the more mature sculpts, but sometimes a smaller size catches my eye. I don't limit myself by size because there are sculpts of all sizes I enjoy, I also get ridiculously sentimentally attached to my dolls (and most inanimate objects for that matter). I have one darling MSD boy, and a floating MSD-sized girl head that I recently got as an extra for one of my orders. I can't let her go because I'm already attached and already having ideas for her, like she was meant to come to me haha.

So I guess in short, I don't judge by size! What happens happens!

    9. I only have MSDs right now and two more coming xD And the only other size I have owned was a YoSD. I didn't really understand the whole thing where people say they just can't bond with a certain size, until my Yo.
I had fun with her at first, customizing her and getting her all styled, but once she was "complete" she just sat there and I never had an interest in picking her up, hanging out with her or changing anything about her. She just didn't catch my eye, so I sold her.
I have mostly SDs on my wishlist so hopefully I can get one soon and see how I feel about them; maybe they will be my favorite size :3 I've really liked the ones I've seen and handled in person at meets and such. Honestly I'm not sure why, but I'm super impatient and excited to start collecting SDs. They feel really special to me for some reason...? Idk. But I love my MSDs and have more still on my wishlist as well, so I don't think I could ever give em up lol.
So in conclusion... the way I'm learning is by simply owning different sizes. It's not exactly the most economic route, but at least BJDs tend to keep a high value even secondhand. But my biggest suggestion is to try and go to meets, cons etc. to get a sense of the different sizes. Even watching YouTube videos can be helpful in that regard too.

    10. I love the sculpt/cloths/pictures of the msd and sd dolls, however in real life I don't feel them and to be honest....the sd size kinda scares me too... Guess it's also because they are fully grown but just a bit shorter than my twin girls that it feels weird/off for me personally. (Hope I don't offend people here, cause it's just my opinion and I will still love their looks in pictures :))

So for me at this moment it's the yosd and tiny I like best. Would love to see more dolls with a mature body I those sizes though .... :3nodding:

    11. Btw, is there a way you can see/feel them in real life? Like a shop or friends etc? That might help I guess to find out what size feels best for you... :3nodding:

    12. I got an MSD to go with my friends' MSDs, but I've spent the last few weeks browsing for clothes & looking through dolls and there's such a gorgeous variety of stuff for SDs! I find myself looking through clothes and wishing that it came in MSD size really often... The SD aesthetic seems more mature in general - I'm tempted to buy an SD next but haven't made up my mind just yet.

    13. I find it much easier to sew for SD even though my first full SD has not arrived yet. There are more patterns available for SD than MSD to sew up while you wait and there seem to be more size variances with MSDs than SDs (at least from what I've seen I could be very wrong I'm still new at all of this)

That said, I LOVE my MSD. I wouldn't trade her for anything. Go with what your heart and budget allow for.

    14. My first was MSD but my preferred size is SD.

I first chose MSD because I previously collected Barbies and other fashion dolls and I felt like anything smaller than MSD wouldn't feel worth the money, since I could just buy a cheap fashion doll in that scale. I thought MSD would be big enough to feel 'worth it' and also wouldn't look like a toddler. I wanted a teen doll.

After I got my MSD, he felt tiny! Although he's about the same height as American Girl, he was so much slimmer. I still loved him, but I felt like maybe I should have gone for SD. I hadn't seen a BJD in person until I got my boy, so 60cm just sounded huge!

I stuck with MSD for a few years, then decided to upgrade to SD. I prefer them now due to more mature sculpts and bodies, more mature clothing options, and just loving the size! I do still own one YoSD, one Minifee and one 73cm boy, but I think the ones in the 55-65cm range are my best option and I own 13 in that size currently.

    15. I really like how cute and tiny MSD are.. But my favorite dolls tend to be SD size. I feel like they're a lot easier to pose. At least in my experience, both of my MSD sized dolls cannot stand on their own~ It could just be their sculpt though!

You should chose a doll you will like no matter the size!

    16. When I first got into BJD's I was kind of uninformed on sizes, and while I realized that I mostly liked the MSD size just from looking at company photos, I didn't quite realize what 1/3 and 1/4 meant. (As in, I didn't realize which one was an SD or an MSD, and most of the companies I saw had alternative names for their sizes on their sites, such as Iplehouses's JID line.)

As a result, I almost accidentally bought an SD for my first doll! It was literally a week before I was going to buy her when I realized she wasn't an MSD like I thought. Fortunately they had the same sculpt in a smaller size. Still, I can't help but wonder if I would have enjoyed my accidental SD!

    17. I tend to like big dolls so went right for the large bjds. And I have a DM trinity on order who will be really big.

    18. Large dolls are too big for me, but tiny one does not feel right for me, so I decided middle place, mini dolls. Though I have plan to get tiny doll soon, don't know about large dolls, maybe I'll get one after I move to larger room.

    19. My partner was frightened by dolls. I had settled on an SD size doll because of the unique size. We came to a compromise that I could get a middle size between 45 cm and 60 cm. My 50 cm doll was just right for both of us! I can happily say my partner's fears are now no existent! I am so happy we could find a good compromise

    20. I really like SD dolls, they might be heavy and big but i really feel ''conforted'' by them. They are like friends to me...I know it might be sound wierd to some of you but yeah. :kitty2
