How Did You Decide Size?

Jun 23, 2011

    1. Right now, price chooses my size. XD
I have an MSD from Luts, but I would love a larger doll...but seriously, price is currently what decides size for me.

    2. Price is definitely part of the decision for me as well.

    3. The looks. I tried finding a smaller sized doll I liked to be my first (and my second, and my third...) but at the end I kept coming back to SD sculpts. The majority of the sculpts I like turn out to be SDs, unfortunately for my wallet and room, haha. I want to get a smaller one next though, like MSD or something like that, that I can take with me more easily on trips.

    4. So far all the dolls that I'm attracted to are MSDs. The price range is pretty nice, and I like the idea of having them be a bit smaller, since my living space is pretty small. But recently I've been really attracted to SDs and the height difference between SDs and MSDs. I think that it could be very cute, but the main issue I have with SDs is that their faces are a bit too realistic for me, and it's hard for me to find the more stylized face sculpts. Maybe some day though I'll be getting an SD, but I feel like MSDs are the best place for me to start with the hobby.

    5. SD sculpts always seem to capture me more than MSD and yoSD aren't to my taste. I just love the size and maturity of SD sculpts and this size seems to fit all the characters I have planned out :). Only drawback of course is the expense and amount of room SD's take up... and they can get heavy to carry around at cons >_>;;;;

    6. sd just seem more real to me
I'd like to own a real size bed one day

    7. The biggest pull for sizes for me are the characters I want to shell or the facial sculpt. Right now I only have an SD size with me with an MSD on layaway and another in the workings for purchasing secondhand so I guess I'll know for sure which size I like best personally. I love how big SDs are but I feel MSDs are probably so much easier to tote around and bring places!
I never had a draw to anything under 30 cm until I found Peak's Woods and their cute little tinies, dear lord, I want ten of them. I do worry about how easy it may be to lose dolls that little though

    8. I chose the size of my first doll because I fell in love with her sculpt... I would have gotten her no matter what size she was. :)

    9. my first doll was an sd because i liked the size/sculpt but once i got an msd i liked that size better, and then i started going smaller and smaller. i hike with my dolls to take photos so smaller dolls are easier to carry, and the smaller they are the more i can take at one time :)

    10. I thought if I'm spending so much money on a doll I want something to show for it. And I thought a larger size would be easier to sew for (I wanted to learn to make clothes myself for them), so SD size seemed reasonable for me. x) Although they are all really expensive! and sometimes I kind of wish I'd started smaller as I have no idea what I'm doing with this chunk of resin aha!

    11. It's all about looks for me and how easy they may or may not be to dress. I'm after mature looking dolls, since it's completely different from the ones I collected in my youth.

    12. I have a large collection of 18" dolls and I'm not enjoying them anymore and they take up too much room. I'm focusing on my 13" dolls and because of size I decided to start my BJD collection with the smaller dolls. So far B.I.D.s from Iplehouse.

    13. the smallest doll i ever liked was 62cm. i think it's a matter of face type, the smaller one are more childish which i don't admit for 'my' doll

this doesn't count for the girls though.

    14. I felt intimidated to get a large doll as my first to be honest. I wanted a nice inbetween so I went with MSD size. I definitely don't regret my decision. I don't think I'll ever get a large doll though, they're not for me ><

    15. I started with an msd then I purchased a dollfie dream and realized I like taller dolls so I got an sd doll and now ive decided to go to 70 cm. I'm ordering my first 70 cm next month

    16. I chose msd because of spacing at first. i was interested in sd size but I was worried that they would be too big and i wouldn't have anywhere to put them. I also felt that msd would be the easier size to take places and then i found several dolls in the msd size that i really like, so i think i'm sticking to that size.

    17. I came to BJDs from action figures/1:6 scale dolls (and some fashion dolls and Pullip). I moved from Pullip to hyper-realistic pretty early on, but I grew very frustrated in action figures lack of customizeability and small size (it is very hard to sew for these dolls, and often, feasibility, including the number of seams and resultant stiffness of the fabric, interferes with the desired pattern I want for the costume).

As a result, even though there are many tiny mature 1:6 dolls I was interested in, I knew that mature tinies were not for me, as they would have the same sewing problems as Pullip/action figures.

I started with off topic Hujoo MSDs and one baby tiny, hoping, because I liked the 1:6 size, I could learn to like baby YoSDs because the chubbier body would give me more sewing freedom. Unfortunately, that didn't really work, and I tried to restrict myself to MSD and SD, with somewhat success.

I ended up choosing SD for the majority of my crew because mature MSDs with the kind of flexibility I wanted were few and far between. I still like dolls that are probably more angled and older looking than other's preferences, especially for girls' faces (I'm looking at you, Iplehouse!).

I broke my rule once, and I love the doll too much to sell her, but I am dragging my feet on sewing her clothes. She is a 1:6 scale Ancient Tales Rachel, and I know I am going to hate all the cartridge pleats that go into her Italian Renaissance style dress. Darn.

    18. The sculpts I like just all end up being SDs... Mostly SD17. It's rare when I like SD13 or below. Sometimes I like the look of some of the smaller 50cm girls, but I can't imagine myself actually doing anything with them. So I really didn't take size into account when deciding, I just went with whatever looked best to me.

    19. There were just more "modern" 1/4 sculpts at the time that I liked, most of the companies hadn't yet transitioned their 1/3 lines to new type bodies yet. I still prefer 1/4th scale dolls and, to me, they are really the bulk of the hobby in terms of things I browse and look at. Although I would like to own a larger doll, and think some of the larger dolls are very attractive (Loong Soul's Foxes and some of Doll Chateau's artsy stuff are gorgeous), I consider them more like curiosity pieces than what's "normal."

Price has something to do with it for sure, but it's not everything. As someone who is not interested in vampire or male dolls, 1/4th scale just seems to offer a lot more variety.

    20. Since I live in a college dorm, I'm more inclined to get smaller dolls due to space restraints. I'd love to get an MSD or YoSD doll!
