How Did You Decide Size?

Jun 23, 2011

    1. I used to prefer only certain sized dolls, 40-45 cm to be exact. I found that the size was perfect: not too small nor tall. It was easy to take with me and they don't take much space :'D
Today my collection has very different types of dolls. Mostly the smaller ones tho... I have 1 f60 sized doll + 1 f60 head, 1 kid delf and 1 momonita. And on the way is Poulpy, which is on the smaller size also.
I'm still more comfortable with the smaller ones than bigger ones. I like that they are so compact - good poseability, height & weight are good, aesthetics please me more, they are easy to travel with and also it's easier to find props & clothing for smaller ones. And also the characters that I have for them, are small so it makes sense to me that the dolls are small too to comprehend it :'D

    2. When I was first looking I was only looking at SDs but when I first saw MSDs I thought the size was a lot better for me because they take up less space and are more to the size that you would usually think of a doll being (as someone outside of the hobby that is) while still looking somewhat mature (also the price is great XD)

    3. I started out with MSD and SDs. I had a Dollstown 7 and some Dim MSD's as well that I ended up selling. After years and years I realize that I like the big girls. I prefer the Dollstown 18 girl body even though it is a nightmare to find shoes and clothes for her. The DT 18 does take up space but I find that I enjoy how heavy she is in weight. I would like to buy a DT 17 or maybe an Iplehouse doll next. I am always checking SD height and proportions when looking at new companies and sculpts for bodies and heads. Having said that I also like the DT Elf body as well. Another body that is hard to find shoes for...

    4. Just about all the sculpts I'm drawn to are SDs. The others just don't really attract me. I sometimes wish I preferred a cheaper size though.

    5. My first was an msd. ^_^ I honestly didn't care so much about the size, I just knew that I loved her sculpt and I wanted her. :3 I still don't care about size, really. I think all sizes have their good points and if I like the way a doll looks, it doesn't matter to me how big or how small it is.

    6. I think the 42 cm - 55ish cm range is best for me. I really love the size of my Soul Doll Kid and Vito girl. They feel like they have "presence" without being difficult to pose, transport, or store.

I also have a soft spot for mature minis in the 30 cm range. There's just something really fun about them.

    7. My first doll was an impledoll msd and I loved her face but HATED her body. And since I'm so tiny I had such issues handling her. I ended up selling her and getting a smaller yosd. Instant love! I tend to stick to yosd and smaller but I do have 3 msds now. As much as I adore the msds I tend to take my smaller babies to meets and on trips and spend more time with them.

I cannot even imagine tiny little me trying to string an sd!

    8. Looking back through all the comments here. My friend and I havea range of SD size dolls from 52cm up to 70cm. Getting to hold and take time with our 60cm boys tonight, I think I've settled at 60cm being the perfect size for me. Big enough to cuddle and for crafting clothes etc, but a comfortable enough weight to carry around at convention :)

    9. Besides the face sculpt, I was more concerned about my doll have more mature proportions. I really hope to get a smaller scaled guy who still has grown proportions so that it will be easier to bring him out for photos. I ended up having one 30cm off-topic doll and 2 SD ones which fit the 2 conditions. So these 2 factors decided the size of my dolls

    10. So far I only have an SD which got picked out because I liked the more mature look. Size wise I think I'd like MSD and SD but only if I could find MSD that looked like young adults and were proportioned accordingly

    11. I've never specifically chosen a doll for its size. I just end up getting the size body that comes with a sculpt I like.

Honestly, I think I'd prefer a smaller doll most of the time. But most of the smaller dolls tend to look more childish, and that's not always what I want.

    12. I don't own a doll (yet!!) but 35-45cm is my ideal range. In addition to MiniFee and Kid Delf (my two favorite lines) dolls falling within that range, these seem like the most fun to make clothes and props for. They're tiny enough to be an interesting and adorable challenge, but not so tiny that my hand is sure to cramp up while I'm sewing itty bitty stitches. I also feel like I'll be able to comfortably hold them with one hand.

Of course, that may change once I actually get a doll in that range. I may end up deciding that I'll only be happy with 60cm dolls, or that I want to go down to the super tiny ones instead. Only time will tell!

    13. I've always been more attracted to the smaller sized sculpts when it comes to male dolls, but I'm like you- I'm so worried about them not being mature enough. I think it's so important for me, because I want to eventually use the dolls as models to photo and paint and I don't want them to look like little kids all the time. The more mature sculpts for the smaller males- even if they're a bit wiry- are what I go for. It's really important for me.

    14. I thought I'd get a MSD doll but then, everytime I imagined having a SD sized doll a smile crossed my face. I just love big dolls, I always did.

    15. YoSD was too small, SD too big :D MSD seemed to be perfect.

    16. Going to a convention really helped the decision for me, SD dolls are so huge in person! Whereas MSDs are just right, the size and weight I would expect a detailed high-quality doll to be. I also ended up liking childlike MSDs more than expected, very mature MSDs seemed weird with their tiny heads (A FL chicline for example). I definitely see myself owning mostly the mini size, with a few adult SD sculpts.

    17. I suggest getting one of each. My first was MSD sized, and I ordered a Pukifee before she even arrived. Number three is SD sized, and my next one will most likely be YoSD sized.

The only downside of this is that they can't share clothes. That is sort of a positive thing though, because it means I need more clothes :), my wallet doesn't necessarily agree with that though.

    18. I started out my general doll collecting at 1/6 scale, around 27 cm. When it came to BJD, I wanted something bigger. So far I have one MSD who was within my price range- the ultimate dealmaker or breaker. It's a pretty good size for the characters I'm making- some have mentioned that MSD seem younger, more childlike, and that sort of works for the girls I'm shelling.

I've never seen an SD in real life, so I'm not sure how I would like it. 45 cm to 60+ cm doesn't seem like such a big size difference on paper, but comparing photos, it may be too much for me..

    20. SDs have a presence that's hard to ignore. I gravitate toward those.
