How Did You Decide Size?

Jun 23, 2011

    1. My best friend and I have a whole group of characters we either write about, draw or roleplay with. When I started to collect she already had three dolls, all MSDs. I decided it would have been too awkward to have any of my dolls larger than hers, even though they are never put together, it was just the thought of it. I have two MSDs, 1 MSD on the way, a 1/12 on the way and I'm looking to get a 1/6 now. One day though, maybe.. I might finally get a SD... but right now I'm very happy with the sizes I have.

    2. I went straight for the bigger dolls and my first doll is 70+. I just like the fact that I can cram as much details into a doll as I can.

    3. I wanted a bigger doll because I have not much sight. This means face ups and little details aren't ideal for me. But on a bigger doll, they're, well, bigger. So it's easier for me to dress and paint them.
I wanted something like a 50cm or something above that. But nothing more than 60 because that just seems a bit too big for me. Especially for a first doll.
But then I saw an MSD sculpt that I really loved and decided I wanted that too. So it's a mix of what I kind of need, and what I fall in love with, really.
I may have been into smaller dolls. But it's just kind of not ideal with all the finicky little bits that go with them.

    4. I've learned that instead of mini dolls, I like larger dolls.
To me, I've learned that I like the mature faces of most large boys, and the beauty of the larger girl sculpts.
I also feel like the clothing options speak to me more than clothing options for mini dolls do.
I want to make things for them, I feel like it would be to my benefit if I was making things for tall dolls.

    5. I definitely MSD all the way but I think I might branch into larger or smaller dolls as I get older (and get larger spaces to live!!!).

    6. Decisively MSD size.

I think I wouldn't be as comfortable with a SD or tiny size as I'm with my MiniFée.
When I'm sewing some clothes to her, I'm glad to see that details (such as lace, pearls, or everything like this) are just at the good size. When I was sewing for dolls in a littlest size, details just look too big for them. I don't like yo-sd or tinies... I feel so blocked with them.
Moreover, I think it's will be too complicated for me to handle a SD size... I've already struggle with my MiniFée so a SD size : Just no. XD

    7. I first choose a SD sized doll because I fell in love with her sculpt and wanted a bigger and more adult looking doll. I do not mind her size at all, do not find it heavy or clunky. I figured I would stay with SD because the YOSD just seemed so tiny but my budget was tighter this holiday season so I decided to give it a shot anyway. I'm really glad I did because her size is just adorable. I plan on my next doll being a similar size :)

    8. MSD are my limits
I cannot have higher : I will not be confortable with SD

So my doll family is about MSD YOSD and tinies

    9. When I started with the hobby, MSD and tiny dolls were very childlike(with the exception of Unoa, who was pretty hard to find), and I'm not into childlike dolls, so I SD size it was :) Now that there are more adult/teen style MSD dolls, my preference is slowly moving to MSD, because I find them more fun to sew for and easier to pose and photograph. But I still adore my SD collection, and because most interesting(for me)sculpts are still SD, that will probably stay my most-bought size.

    10. I only have YOSD at the moment, though there's a DIM doll I'm tempted by. I just like the ease and portability of the smaller dolls, and I like the possibility of finding clothes that fit them from other doll lines. I was able to get a barbie sweater that actually fit quite well, which you'd be hard pressed to do with the bigger dolls I imagine. I also don't have a lot of space, so YOSD are much easier to display/keep. Plus the sculpts I like just tend to be small lol!

    11. I hate childish-looking dolls. This makes most of the small ones out for me. I don't like the big one because they're just a bit too overwhelming. I have known people that owned a lot of them and they just take up too much space for me.
This really only lets me get MSDs. Thankfully there are a lot more mature msds than there was when I started the hobby and I have more options than ever.

    12. Before I bought my first doll, I went to a meetup and everyone else let me hold theirs. I was planning on an SD from Luts, but I started to believe that an SD was too big for me. I have an MSD now and I'm extremely happy with her size, and there are more mature MSDs coming out now.

    13. I wanted SD so that they would be easier to sew for. then there was the tiny, and she was just so sweet, followed by a pair of MSD's. But most of my dolls are still SD's -- I like their substance and scale.

    14. I decided I wanted an MSD for my first doll when I took a tape-measure and held it at 26, 40 and 60/70 to compare. 26 seemed just to small, 60/70 seemed huge, so I went with MSD

    15. I want to improve my sewing so I buy SD size, more detail can be added when it is bigger.
But since I also traveled quite frequently, I was thinking to buy MSD instead. But Yo-SD also appeal me because the size that can be easily bring to anywhere. But since I want a young adult character, I choose SD as my first :)

    16. When I first got into BJDs I did not know enough to pick a size. I just waited till I found a doll that spoke to me and demanded I buy it, and he happened to be a MSD. The doll that followed was also MSD. For my third I tried for an SD but never got around to getting a body for his head, so from there I stuck with MSD. As it stands I have eight MSDs, one teeny, and finally an SD on his way.

    17. Trial and error for sure; I've owned (and still own) three of the major sizes: SD, MSD, and tinies (16cm and under for me) and have determined which size is best for me to continue collecting. This decision ended up being tinies. :P I originally started off this hobby by purchasing a doll no matter what size just because I loved the sculpt. At the time, I really had no idea of what size would work best for me so I indulged in whatever dolls I fell in love with and learned more about my preferences from there. Years later, I now have narrowed it down to the super cute and portable tinies as my priority in collecting because they suit my wants best.

It all comes down to preference, I think. I love tinies due to the ease in bringing them out and about and the fact that I cherish my childhood so it's fun to re-live it even for a little bit when I play with my tinies and create their personalities. :) SDs are love too because they feel so detailed and it's nice to mix it up with having an adult character. My MSD is the only oddball and I would never buy another MSD. But I do love the sculpt of my MSD so much that I've kept her around for all of these years, yet my MSD feels neither as detailed as a SD nor as portable as a tiny.

    18. I decided on a 60cm because I only plan on owning two dolls. I don't have a lot of space but I love how the big dolls look and I have a feeling that I'll grow more attached to the bigger dolls. Smaller dolls to me would be more like one of my many figurines. I wanted them to be special and something I can use with my other hobbies.

    19. When I started this hobby, I sworn that I'd never get something bigger than a 1/6 doll (and got a tiny). Then, I fell in love with an MSD...
After the initial shock (I never had in my hand an MSD or something bigger) I feel that size a perfect compromise between sewing comfort and handling comfort, and I have another MSD on the way. Now I hope to not desperately fall in love with something bigger...

    20. I always get dolls because I love their sculpts and I sort of fell into this size range...so far, that's meant MSDs and tiny-tinies (mostly event dolls like Doll Chateau baby Ada). My first doll was a Dollzone Star and she's pretty medium-sized as far as my collection goes. MSDs are huge to me! My Alberta is big enough to be almost unmanageable and if I didn't love her sculpt so much I probably wouldn't have kept her (or ordered 2 more MSDs...>.>). I can't imagine owning SDs even though I love the look of some detailed sculpts there.
