How did you first get into Dolls?

Sep 7, 2009

    1. Hwenever i go to my cousin's, i look around her room while she watches TV. I stumbled across a haute doll magazine and then i had to get one. :aheartbea

    2. I can't remember if someone sent me a link saying, "woah, check these out!" or I ran across it randomly. Either way, I forgot for a time and recently came across them again randomly, thinking, "I remember this!" and am currently saving for my first~

    3. I first discovered them by browsing deviantart, it was a migidoll ryu, and a soom sard which caught my attention I believe. I fell in love and immediately started researching... Here I am 2 years later saving up for a soom :D

    4. I went to my first convention in 2001, and saw a group of congoers with these magnificent looking dolls. I always wanted one since. That was where I had the desire just spark. I was real young, and didn't have funds and well...there was no way in Hell mom would buy me one.

I've always grew up with a fascination with dolls, and my mom is actually a doll collector. I always wanted something poseable, and customizable. I just didn't realize BJD's existed until that one convention, and that the urge to have one would be so strong later on down the line.

    5. Please delete my comment...

    6. I went to my friend's house one day during my Freshman year of college, and she had discovered the Volks site, and showed me their dolls. I was hooked just as bad as she was.

    7. I was at an anime convention minding my own business when all of a sudden I stumbled into a room full of beauties! I had never seen such amazing dolls. And since it was a convention, I got to see so many kinds and met so many artists who did amazing work. That was about a year ago and I got my doll a month ago after much convincing myself. ^^

    8. Quoting myself from January to add an update. :)
I recently purchased my first BJD, a lati white. Then I fell head over heels for Fairyland Realpukis Tyni and Soso and have them on layaway. I have discovered that I do not enjoy sewing doll clothes (and don't know how to crochet or knit) and clothing for these really tiny tinies seems to be hard to come by. I have spent quite a bit on the Blythe doll wardrobe so I am thinking that my next BJD may be a Pukifee who can share their clothes.

    9. My mom is a barbie (and other vintage doll) collector. She had a tendancy to buy doll magazines. (mainly Barbie Bazaar) One of the magazines she picks up (when she has the money) is Haute Doll. It took the magazine a while, but it started to do little ad about BJDs, and then a full articles labeled as Angel's Den (hint hint hint)
Out of a whim, we started looking at doll parts on ebay and talking about piecing one together. But that was about six years ago, and we haven't done anything yet.
Then, last year, my friend (almost sister) Scarele was talking about getting a BJD.
And she did. She has Nox, a Soom Breccia in her possession. Between that and one of my favorite artists ( http://ladyusada.deviantart.com ) getting one, I was hooked and started looking more and more into it, and even joining here so I could learn more.
Currently I have a Soom Nenad on layaway, and am contemplating buying a Delf Moon.
Yes, I am hooked, much to my fiance's dismay... But I'll let him suffer.

    10. I forgot how I ran across them. All I know is I spent years researching, I've finally purchased my very first one, though. ^^ ♥

    11. How did I first get into dolls? Well, I got won an American Girl doll at this raffle thing. And the Lady of the Manners talks about dolls occasionally. Monster High dolls, Blythes, Evangeline Ghastly, and dolls like that. The dolls are pretty, so of course I'm going to like them. I found BJDs through a lolita blog though. Adorable dolls you can dress up in frills and ruffles? Yes, please. I'm currently looking for my first and trying to learn more about them.

    12. Well, I always loved dolls since I was little! Although, I first found out about BJDs after reading Japan Ai by Aimee Steinberger and her trip to VOLKS in Japan. After reading about her love for the dolls, I knew I just HAD to see what these dolls looked like! Since then, I've adored BJDs. =]

    13. Ive been fascinated with dolls ever since I was young. I first found out about bjds when I was Jr. high. I was ominously strolling around barnes and noble when I came across a magazine that caught my attention, called Haute Doll. There was a particular section about Den of angels and Bjds. The first site I ever visited was Luts and Dream of doll and I fell in love. Its been 8 years and Im still loving them still xD Plus after all those years Ive finally managed to purchase my first bjd~ Though its a floating head, Im still happy and saving for his body xP

    14. I was writing a dark knight fanfic in which my OC had a dysfunctional relationship with the Joker and he decided to paint her face for various reasons (it makes sense in the plot but it'd take too much time to go into it here). Anyway, I searched 'Pierrot' on google images to look for face paint ideas and came across the Iplehouse Pierrot Tatiana - and thought it was a real person. I can't remember the name of the person now, all I know was that it was a black and purple website. I realised it was a doll and found out the details from the owner and went onto the Iplehouse website.

I adored it, I really wanted one but I saw the price and immediately though 'no way, a doll isn't worth that.' And that was it. For about six months. They kept popping up on places like Deviant Art and somehow I managed to find prowlcat on youtube. In her video she was saying that she took her dolls out to places like restaurants and the pub and I started to realise the possibilities - how much they can come into your life and I started thinking that maybe it wasn't such a waste of money.

And that was it, I decided to get one. And I've never looked back XD

    15. I absolutely love this thread. Although I saw pics of a couple of Volks a short while before, I got into BJD by the internet in July-August 2005, when I really found out about them seeing one I did like (CP Luts Delf Soo Special) on the Korean version of Dollmore. She was showing a Dollmore wig and with those facial features, that makeup and that hair she reminded of myself. It took me a short time of research until I knew she was from Luts (Where most of my BJD came from) and even a shorter one (Before she arrived in September 7th, 2005) to change my mind about the character she would finally be. Then I realized the most of which other ones I would get. Curiously, my last BJD came from that same site I saw her for first time, although in its English version, Dollmore. For me it is a kind of emotional coincidence.

    16. My Grandmother collects and makes clothing for dolls of all types. From her, I loved to dress dolls. Then, I saw a BJD at a anime convention in 2004. I loved it, but I couldn't remember what it was called when I got home. Then, I accidentally stumbled across the term "BJD" online and life is as it is now.

    17. Oh I saw these lovely dolls in photos on the internet and I was like "Oh my god that is so so so pretty" then I figured out what they were and once more I was like "So damn pretty. Must have".
Really only recently have I begun saving which is probably stupid but, you know, hindsight is a jerk.

    18. This was.... a very long time ago. *laugh* Before loli hit North America, anyway. I've always been a Japanophile and tend to be a bit ahead on things like that. So. I learned of them through Gothic and Lolita. Searching for male EGA and Ouji-sama turns up a LOT of hits for doll clothing, and lolis with their dapper little doll escorts. I never cared for the big-eyed cute dolls, so didnt pay them much attention other than being quite aware of Volks and such... but Dollshes caught my eye eventually, and I realized there was a whole world of mature-looking BJD out there. That was it for me. *shrug*

    19. i kept seeing people and their dolls on deviant art! they were really nice pictures and i have always wanted a personal model for photography and this is the perfect way to fulfill my dreams >_<

    20. I've loved dolls since I was a baby. I never really not liked dolls. I owned several Barbies as a kid and that was that. I was hooked on dolls. After watching my mom make pillows, I started making homemade dolls using fabric from old cotton shirts that were never worn and plastic bags as the internal skeleton. Each has a personality. That was how my sewing skills developed too. I would experiment with how to make hands, feet, ears, as well as improve on the body itself. I would make a doll and either give it away to someone more needy of a "friend" or my parents would sneak behind my back and throw it away. I got better at making my own dolls since I got older and more comfortable in the craft. One day during my high school freshmen year, I discovered a little website called www.dannychoo.com (I'm sure no one has ever heard of this website; lol.) That was when I first saw a BJD. I just kept thinking, 'OMG, what do I have to do to get one? I want one so bad, they're so pretty!!'
Fast forward to the present- I will finally get a BJD after years of putting it off, extensive over-researching on the companies during this summer break, never having the money for them and other things like college to worry about!! I decided that I will get the very first one that I ever saw as an ever-lasting dedication to the influence that brought me into the hobby.
