How do you carry your dolls?

Jan 26, 2006

    1. Hm, I saw people using these really nice, fancy doll carrier bags at the Comic-Con. I actually thought I wanted to get one, too, but... I noticed my dolly always struggling out of the little cloth bag she came in to take a peek at all the con-goers. She's a big people watcher, so I figured that putting her in a carrying case would kind of be mean to her. So, if I can't carry her in my free hand, I put her in her cloth bag, with her head peeking out, so she can see all the goings-on.

Next year, I want to make my doll part of my Comic-Con costume. Since carying her around in my free arm the entire time there isn't very practical, I've been trying to think up different ways of carrying her that lends atmosphere to my costume, such as a cage hanging from a walking stick, or a globe on the top. We're still trying to figure out how to make it work.

    2. Heehee I'm not gonna get to go to Gogadoll, but I can go to Anime convention; It's only a couple of cities away! Haha anyway, if i have my big girl by then, I'll carry her in my arms but I'll bring a bag for the dart-train ride and the walk to the building, and any time that I can't be holding her. Ya know, tired arms. ^__^

    3. I carry mine around, but I only have a tiny and one sd13 so it's not that had. I still have one hand to look at things. We also have a booth at a con. that babysit our dolls and people can see them as well.

    4. while looking on youtube for bjd's it said that some people carry their dolls in violin cases, wich i didnt think about but it came across as a very good idea ^^

    5. At a convention that would be accepting of dolls, such as the Whitby Goth Festival I have been to, I carry my SD doll under my arm with him dangling. Or sort of lent over my shoulder. I try and make carrying him look casual and not as though Im displaying him. At the goth festival (thousands of people in one small town) no one grabbed him or touched him. I think its common sense, carry them as you see fit depending on where you are. If youre in a busy space youre going to want more protection etc.
If Im carrying my doll from place to place he will just go in his doll bag or folded up and padded in my travel bag.

    6. At conventions, I usually carry my two dolls. I'll either cling one of them to my chest in both arms, or I'll have Rei sitting in the crook of my arm with Kia on his lap.
When I get more dolls...hm. Would probably have to get a case. Though when I'm just up to 3, I can have Rei sitting in his girlfriend's lap...

    7. OK, all my dolls are vinyl, so maybe I shouldn't make such a big deal about it, but I have a rolling duffel that all four dolls fit in, and there is likely room for two others in the bag. I wrap most of my dolls, clothed but without their wigs, in baby blankets. Mitzi, however, came with a yellow satin "sleeping bag" which I think is something that Resinsoul ships their dolls in, so she is always put in the rolling duffel in the "sleeping bag." I have lined the duffel with an 1 inch thick polyurethane foam called "museum foam" that I get from a friend of mine that works at a crating/cartage company. It has lining on all five sides, and I put a rectangular piece on top of everything before I zip it up. I also use bath towels to layer in some more protection. The result is bulky, but it's not really that heavy -- vinyl, remember! It's also quite secure.

    8. He sit in my arms, at the Doll stand, or I help him walking (he stands on the floor with the arms up and I "walk" with him), not for long though (walking part). He mostly sits in my arms :]

    9. Personally I just carry them around in my arms. C:
I usually have a backpack when I go to any con, so if I get tired of holding them, or it becomes really inconvenient, I'll just set them in the bag until I can hold them again. C:

    10. Hello! ^_^

I just want to ask to everybody because since I have my 2 dolls 1 MSD and 1 tiny, I never go out of my home taking them with me! :aheartbea

I really would like to know, some suggestions how to take them with me. But another problem it's that if I take with me, I don't want to simply put them inside a bad and leave them inside all the time. I was thinking ... if there's some idea, for example a waistband, or an "Infantino baby swing"?
But what models? I dont want to looks too much 'strange'! XD
have you ever seen pictures how japanese girls take around their dolls?
Do doll owners typically carry around thier dolls with them? I know at conventions and meetups, but what about if I'm just in a mood? Is it wierd to carry it around with me?

I feel a little strange to just carry my dolls in my arms ...

      any idea?

      Thanks! :D

    11. My friend just carries them in her arms, I have also seen people with those little "dog carriers" and people just have the dolls half in and half out of those. Once I have mine I'll just carry them!

    12. Basically carry them in one arm. :D I can't imagine using a carrier or stroller. Itd go against my uhhh... Dolly beliefs.

    13. If intended for transport, I use a doll carrier or bag. If intended for display, I carry them in my arms. Usually the left because I'm right handed, but really whichever one is free or not stiff or tired.

If you transport them outside of a bag, you risk losing parts. Not necessarily of the doll, but possibly wig hairs, hair accessories, clothing details, other small things you don't really think about that can get snagged or lost without you noticing right away. Not only that, but I am personally paranoid about UV, so I don't take them out into exposed sky if I don't have to, and direct sunlight is a no-no! Living things can heal, dolls don't.

    14. Same here.

Unless I know I'm in friendly surroundings I can't predict what people might do or what kind of situation I might find myself in. For me, protecting my doll from sunlight and accidents far outweighs the need for me to have them with me or show them off to strangers. The one time I took my doll to a convention and carried him around all day he got really heavy and I wished I had his bag so I could wear him on my back and I nearly lost his wig in traffic!

As to it being weird carry a doll around in public, yep it is odd. You just have to decide if you feel comfortable with that. I don't care if a person wants to walk around all day carrying a big expensive doll, a floor lamp or giant ceramic elephant - whatever floats your boat. If you feel good about it, why not?

    15. I carry one of my dolls in a doll carrier, but since I have two now bringing both anywhere is a little tricky until I get a new carrier for two. I usually just pad up a bag and put the other in it. I have no desire to display my dolls to strangers. I'm jut not comfortable with that sort of thing. Plus, I don't want to loose anything or exposing them to sunlight. It's just safest to transport them in bags.

    16. Since the doll I have currently is small, she fits easily into my purse. When I take her other places, she's usually cradled in my arm. Yes, people look at me weird, but I don't care.

    17. Thanks to all for the suggestions! I taked today my 2 dolls with me... I used a bag to put the little one, in a side of me, and the other in my left arm! It was really cute thing... I was with just 1 friend that understand these type of things and he was happy too! So I feel really confortable and I was happy to have taked them with me! :) I never did before, because I really scary that my dolls could be damage or lost parts, or I don- t never want to expose them at the direct light of the sky or sun... but this time I want to take with me!
We go to see an inauguration *in a close building {withous sun around }with all the christmas decorations, beautiful really... there was lights, etc.. and people really don-t care or notice that I have a doll in my hand, because they purchase a lot of things that also carried in hands , like santa claus dolls, snow man dolls, animal stuffed *in Christmas theme etc... so I really feel very confortable! It was really beautiful ! I think all depends where you take your dolls. If you go in a close place, it-s good! But it-s not to display dolls to others but it-s just for me! I-m agree with crystalamaris, I really don-t care what think people after all... If I wish to take with me them, and I love too much to take with me my dolls , why not ? At least 1 time in 1 year in some beautiful place! :aheartbea :D

    18. i don't have a doll carrier, so i use a huge shoulder bag and stuff the pillows they came in in the bag, and seat them in the bag, sitting "L" shaped. i tried putting 1 doll and my own stuff (water bottle, book etc), and also 2 dolls (but i couldn't fit in anything else).

i rarely carry them on my hand whenn travelling (by that i mean taking transport to conventions, friends' house and not travelling as in by plane) because they just get really heavy after a while, and i got tired of the weird stares. :/

    19. What I have used to take multiple dolls to a meet is carry them in a divided wine bottle carrier with their heads poking out of the top so people could see their faces as I carried the bag around. I haven't openly carried my dolls in public.

    20. It really depends! I made myself a huge doll carrier so that I can carry multiple dolls, props, and a lot of other stuff, but since I only have a single 1/4 BJD right now, I rarely use it (I made it so that it would be ready for when I get my 70cm). Instead, if I'm going on the train or walking a long way, I carry Otavi in my school bag, wrapped up in his blanket and padded with several yards of other fabric. If I'm only going a short ways away, I just carry him in my arms.
