How do you pronounce "Leeke" and other company/sculpt names?

I've called the company before and they said.."Annyonghasaeyo.(hello,) Lee-kee World Ipneda. (This is Leekeeworld.)"
WEIRD! I thought it was Lee-Keh all the time. @_@

 

ohhh cool I just started taking German (sorry I know that's OT y'all) Anyways umm I've always said it "leek" and so do my friends. I'm not sure I could change how I say it now but it is nice to know.

I pronounce it "leak" I believe i'm wrong but i still say it because its easier that way
I guess as international buyers we can't do much since we buy through the website and never get to hear the way it's being originally pronounced.

Since I'm an English speaker, the spelling "Leeke" is pronounced "Leak" and that's how I've always said it! It never even OCCURRED to me that that may be wrong! D:

 

Hahaha... Like some here, I pronounced it as "leek", you know, the onion?

 

I pronounce it as "loots" too...

 

When it is just left as Leeke, I pronounce it like the onion, Leek, but when it's the full company name, Leeke World, I've been pronouncing it Le-keh World because Leek World just doesn't flow well for me in conversation, and I'm amazed at how many people in the public want to know what company my Mihael came from.

 

So yea, I'm one of the many who pronounce it as "leek" :P

U-noa = [yoo-noh-ah] (ユノ&#12450. Quluts = [koo-loos] (クル&#12473.

Asleep Eidolon = [ahy-doh-luhn]. This is a Greek word (εἴδωλο&#957.

LUTS = [loots] (루츠입&#45768. This term is an acronym but this is the Korean pronunciation.

Leeke = [lee-ke] (리&#52992.

Volks = [vohks] (ボーク&#12473. It is uncertain if the "L" is intended to be pronounced, but it is not in Japanese.

Narae = [nah-re] (나&#47000. Narin = [nah-rin] (나&#47536.

Bobobie = [boh-boh-bee] (波波&#27604.

Ys = [ees] (이&#49828. This is the name of a mythical French city.

Yder = [ee-der] (이&#45908. There is no "er" sound in Korean, but it is written as "イダー" in Japanese, confirming this pronunciation.

Fairyland dolls...there is a little confusion here because there is no "F" sound in Korean, so the "P" sound is used instead (just like "B" is used for "V" in Japanese). However, it can be assumed that the "F" sound is intended and therefore should be pronounced as such.

FWIW, I always use the German pronunciation of "Volks" with an "f" sound, like in "Volkswagen". It seems more logical to me when it comes to non-Japanese words filtered through Japanese pronunciation and back.

 

For the "fee" in minifee, littlefee etc, I always pronounce it "fay" as in French for fairy. I think since the company is called Fairyland they're referencing that in the lines' names, and there is an accent over the first e (which my computer can't do). This pronunciation doesn't work so well for Feeple, which is a pun on people, but maybe since they're Korean they don't know fee is pronounced fay in French? I don't know, it's just speculation but I prefer saying "miniFAY" than "minifee" because the fee certainly isn't mini!

Though to be honest it doesn't matter to me, especially unless you go to a lot of meets you tend to write rather than say the names. As long as we all understand each other, that's what counts!

 

I had always heard Bobobie was also acceptably pronounced "Bo-bah-bee". That's how I usually say it, it's easier for me. haha

But question of the day---HOW do you pronounce the Crobidoll sculpt "Ys"???? I own the doll and I adore him, but it's always SO awkward when asked what he is in person. It it "why-ess" like saying the letter? "Ees"? "Yes"? "Iss"? lol I have NO clue!

 

Thanks for the completely unasked for language policing, which is sort of ridiculous given the huge amount of dialectical differences found in native English speakers alone, let alone what happens when non-native English speakers try to pronounce seemingly English words that were originally created by non-native English speakers themselves.

As long as everyone can figure out what people are talking about, pronunciation really doesn't matter.

Original poster - please don't go to a meet with that kind of attitude, or you really won't have a nice experience of it.

 

Kim said it better than I could. If you are afraid to go to a meet because you'll correct everyone's pronunciation, you should be. Most people don't really like to be told that they're saying their doll's maker or sculpt name wrong. Just ease off and admire all the pretty dolls! The object of any language is communication. If you can get your point across it does not really matter how you pronounce something in a casual setting like a doll meet.

As long as we can understand one another, I don't think pronunciation matters and I think the first post was worded a little harshly/condescendingly. I'm sure she means well enough but it came off the wrong way, I think.

 

Seriously-- if nobody knows exactly how a name would be pronounced by the person who created it, then there's no way anyone can run around correcting other people's pronunciations of it. If I went to a meetup where someone was cruising around correcting everyone's pronunciations, I would turn on the Ignore Shields and avoid that person at any future meetups. Not the type of collector I'd find fun to hang around with. In the groups I hang around with in this town, everyone seems to have 3 or 4 different pronunciations for everything, but we all know what each other's talking about. Much more fun to spend our time & words talking about the dolls themselves.

I am originally from the east coast, and I still pronounce "because" as "bacawse", and none of my California-native friends ever presume to stop & correct me to pronounce it their way ("bicaaz")-- because they know what I mean.
