How do you protect your Dolls from pets?

Jan 9, 2015

    1. Maybe it will be best for you to keep your dolls in their boxes while you don't work on them, also it prevent clothes and sun to stain the resin... and they'll be safe from cat fur and chewing.

My dolls are kept in their boxes. There are times when I work on outfit/armor or before photoshoot they are left on my working table. Happily my cats (3) doesn't care about the dolls and leave them alone. Only Mini-Link is sitting on a desk and nothing happened yet... only dust and cat fur.

    2. One of my cat's loves the dolls and will try to sit on their laps and rub up against them purring her head off. I pose them in a way that makes it hard for her and when I have to have them out around her I add a little bit of a barrier around them. A cardboard box or a chair cornering off the area sometimes also deters her. It isn't that she can't get to them its just that its much more work then its worth. In particular when you leave cat attractants like cat nip or a favorite toy nearby to play with.

    3. I keep them away from my dog's reach. My first doll Yugi was encouraged to be near so he wouldn't chew her and after that he lost ALL interest besides nudging them sometimes with his nose if I got them on the ground. He's pretty good about leaving my dolls alone. You just gotta teach 'em...

(Though I know cats are stubborn SOB's)

    4. Sorry for double posting but you could evict her if you have to because that's ridiculous.

    5. Okay, so, I have two possible, real life solutions that don't involve removing the cat or the roommate permanently, and should be feasible to do on a small budget and fit generally any living space. They're not perfect, and might not be pretty, but they should work.

First of all, pet barrier sprays don't work (and can actually make behavior problems worse), and if the owner of the cat can't be bothered to change the cat's behavior, the best suggestion I have for you is to simply get a pet gate. Yep, a pet gate. You can find them at thrift stores, goodwill, pretty much anywhere on the cheap. You can even buy two and 'stack' them in the doorway, if you think the cat will jump over one, to secure your room in your absence, or at night. This is an easy way to block the door without blocking the airflow- the downfall is getting you in and out easily. They do make extra tall ones with doors built in like this one, if you think the cat won't jump it, it's a very good option.

Second idea, which may not be the most aesthetically pleasing, but is also cheap and practical.. keep your dolls in a cage. You can't cage the cat, but your dolls are inanimate and stationary. Cages work both ways, keeps critters in or out. Depending on the size of your dolls and what you find locally, you can find a nice big bird or large ferret cage and re-purpose it into a doll loft, which can turn out looking pretty cool if you have an eye for design. You can cover the entire thing with a sheet as well to protect the dolls from sunlight, dust, and other such things, and access to them would be just a hinged door away. I would suggest something like this, where the entire top hinges open, rather than just a small doorway. Just make sure the bars are close enough together that prying paws won't slip through.

    6. Do you have an IKEA store nearby? They have some inexpensive glass cases. If you can't get something right away, I would suggest putting your dolls in a box while you are sleeping or are not paying attention to them.

I'm not sure how to keep them away from dolls besides putting them in some kind of case or box, I don't have this problem with my cats. One of them just sniffed the dolls when they first came in and the other just rubs against them when they are at hand. He doesn't bite though and I have no problems with him rubbing against the dolls since he isn't damaging anything.

My cats do like scratching though, and we bought this spray that is called Scratch Not. It actually does stop them from scratching and they tend to stay away from the wicker chair that we spray the stuff on, so maybe that? The downside is that the effects only last for one day, you have to be spraying the stuff everyday, so a case would be the best option...

Edit: Yeah, I do have to agree with Zuka Engel about sprays. They work for my cats only because scratching that wicker chair is the only issue we have with them. But they only stop scratching when the thing has been sprayed, when it isn't, they scratch it. So the behavior doesn't get fixed.

A baby/pet gate is a good idea and would probably be less expensive than a display case. It would just be a matter of making sure it has enough height to prevent the cat from jumping.

And a cage also seems like a great idea. And they sell some pretty bird cages, so I don't think aesthetics will be a problem.

    7. The cat has been relocated to a new home! She's much happier there, a bit stressed from the move, but a lot happier and has her old friends back.
I'll keep the doll cabinet in mind when I move out, and I hope anyone else who was looking for info found some helpful tips too!
Thanks everyone who offered advice, I really appreciate it :)

    8. Glad to hear kitty has a new home. Hopefully all is well now.

    9. You could also refinish woods to make them fit your decor (or go with rather than match.) ^^

i have not yet gotten my first doll, but i know that in our current house, she'll live in my 'library' closet which is windowless and has a door i can close.

You could try some of the normal deterrents for cats... there are some sprays and things. Put them out around where your dolls stay and see if it'll keep the cat away.

    10. luckily my cat doesn't jump up where my dolls are kept so they don't get pet dander or fur on them but for your situation I would suggest just covering them up with a soft cloth while they aren't amusing you

    11. I store my dolls in a room the pets aren't allowed in - my library. HOWEVER, I do like to take my dolls out semi-regularly. Whenever I leave the room, my toy poodle, Arno, STEALS THEIR WIGS. It doesn't matter what kind of wig it is (at first, I thought the hair type might be a trigger). He just likes to steal it and take off for parts unknown and I have to track him down. Now, I just take him with me from room to room - but sometimes I forget, and I return with my doll(s) hairless! :|

    12. I think my cat is attracted to my doll's alpaca wig:lol: I think I read somewhere that cats have a strong attraction to alpaca fiber?. I keep my dolls in those ikea glass cabinets next to my sewing machine so I don't forget to keep her out of my kitties paws.:D

    13. The other day I was working on a fur wig I made for my doll, and I had it on his head for styling purposes. My cat stealthily snuck behind a doll box and a bag of fabric that was nearby and proceeded to leap out and SWAT the wig right off his head AS I WAS WORKING ON IT! I think he was trying to grab it, luckily I had trimmed his claws recently so it just flew across the room. I yelled loudly and he scampered off. Silly little bugger :sigh

This is why my doll room at the new house is ''no cats allowed'' lol.

    14. My cats ignore the dolls (except as scratching posts LOL) but the WIGS ~sigh~ I have to watch them. I do have my dolls ALL over my house & the cats really could care less (I have found Harry the cat sleeping on Harry the doll's lap but that doesn't bother me LOL)

    15. I keep my dolls well out of the reach of my little boston terrier. He has had opportunity when supervised to sniff them but they seem to spook him! I think the eyes put him off as he can't work out if they are real or not. He has run off with clothing and wigs before but that was my fault for leaving said items in reach when knowing full well he will do anything to have a game of chase! Picture me chasing him around the garden to try and get some MSD sized underwear out of his mouth!! :D

    16. My kitty will steal/chew anything wool, including wigs. However, she's never cared two straws about the dolls or any other wigs, so she doesn't try and get at them. For the most part, I keep her out of the rooms the dolls live in, since she is a cat, and has a cat's curiosity.

I don't have a dog, but my dad's dog is a chewer. Anything, everything. He'll sneak into rooms and snitch stuff to chew on if he's upset at you. The only defence there is not to have doll and dog in the same house, in my opinion! On the other hand, I also know dogs who are much better behaved, so it just depends on the pet in question.

    17. I guess I'm lucky, because my dog doesn't like to chew on hard things that aren't food. He won't even chew on rubbery dog toys, only plush ones! So when I get a doll, he just wants to give it a quick sniff to see what it is, then he ignores it. :)

    18. Luckily, my dogs aren't allowed upstairs where my doll is.

If I were you, I would put them in a safer place. Even if you have to put them up or in a drawer with some cushions. I would be super pissed if my dogs messed with my doll. But then again, the only time that would happen is if I left her downstairs where they could reach.

I'm sorry your pets are being a pain!

    19. Uhoh... bad kitty is bad. My boyfriend has a problem with one of his cats, the problem being that it likes to jump up on his bed when he's not there and piss all over it. To solve this problem, and make sure it stopped jumping up onto his bed, he bought an automatic repellant (linked). I would suggest getting one and setting it up near where you store your dolls. Make sure it is pointed away from them, and also make sure that if the can falls over i won't end up pointing towards your dolls either! It's well worth the cost though to avoid pee and bite marks. :)

    20. My family have two dogs and i dont let them in my room, my BJD is pretty safe inside my closet. I'm lucky that my familys dogs are not that crazy like cats can be sometimes. I would be very pissed off if they did something to damage my doll, but that would really not happen because they can't reach where she is inside my closet, they are to small. We have one Cavalier, Pimpim he is the oldest and then we have a Havanese, Milton he is a little demon! x'D So yeah they dont stand a change. xD But i can suggest everyone who have pets to put their dolls either back in the boxes or inside your closet, if you have good space there ofc, so they are safe from your pets and you dont need to worry. :dance
